Advise on ESCO's - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm looking for some advise on Energy Services Companies. Our local electric utility is asking us to choose an ESCO for our electric supply, as well as choose if we want a variable rate, or a fixed rate.

The whole mess smells like Enron corporate greed to me. I've called the various ESCO's in our area for supply pricing, and some of them only say they will offer a "competitive rate", code for "we don't know yet".

My thought is to pick a variable rate, because the ESCO isn't going to set a fixed rate to loose money...or are they going to set the fixed rate low for the first year to sucker people in to stay at a fixed rate and then raise the rates to make money after that. HELP!

I was on an ESCO for natural gas in Maryland. I've since moved back to the Utility directly due to the flat rate hike imposed by the ESCO. I used to get the gas at a discount in winter and paid a bit more for it in the summer. Overall it was a savings.

Recently the ESCO has raised the flat rates to above what the Utility expects the highest point to be during the peak of winter. No savings there so I dropped the ESCO.

My 2 cents.
