I just brought home my used '04 Pilot yesterday...bought it from a private party.
I had to honk the horn this morning and once I did, it wouldn't stop! One continuous horn blowing. Not beep, beep, beep, just one loud honk! I had to turn off the ignition, turn it on again and it stopped. I tried to honk again and the same thing happened.
What is this? How unnerving it was driving for a half mile with this horn sounding before I could turn off the ignition.
Thanks for any replies. |

04pilotmommy - From the sounds of it, you have a solenoid sticking - although I didn't realize there was one in the horn circuit. A solenoid is an electrical/mechnanical switch that functions only when current is going to it. In your case, you send current to it when you honk the horn. Something in the steering column, most likely, is maintaining the current to the solenoid even after you let up on the horn. The solenoid finally resets when all power is turned off.
Shouldn't be expensive to correct if your Pilot is under warranty, but it will be very irritating until they can get it fixed. :3:
Suggest you use lights and hand signals vice your horn until then... :2: |

ARwebpilot - Thanks so much. Gee, my first posting and I received such a quick reply...and hopefully right on. Let's see what the service dept. has to say at the dealership.
Not that I use the horn daily, or anything!!!!
Take care. |

It probably has to do with the cold temperature. (depending on where you live, of course.) In the cold weather, the cover of the horn button (and airbag) contracts. This can cause it to not spring back up, and therefore not stop honking. As for fixes- I don't know. Try parking in a garage, or heating it up. Maybe it will help. If that doesn't work, have them replace the horn/airbag cover.
Thanks,

And I would suggest making note of what the temperature was when it was stuck, in case it is warmer when you get it to the dealer.
The best way to get it fixed is to demonstrate the stuck horn in the dealer's main service entrance. It should get their attention I would think. |

You might want to try honking the horn again to see if it repeats. That whole "couldn't replicate the problem" thing will come up at the Dealer and you might waste a trip.
Although they do seem to cater to new buyers more and should give it a serious look. Let us know what they find. |

| I didn't have this problem with my Pilot, but I did have it with a Volvo. If I remeber correctly it was some type of relay. I had to disconnect the horn until I got it fixed at the dealer. |

Thank you to everyone who took an interest here and replied. Well, after a few days at the Honda dealer, they found the problem and fixed it. It was an aftermarket alarm that was installed by the original owner and then, at some point, disconnected, but not all the way. The wire remaining was causing some type of interference (for lack of a better description) when honking the horn, thus the "sticking." Honda disconnected this aftermarket wire and all should be well now...no "defect" with the Pilot, so to speak.
Gee, I only had her for a week before I had to give her up for a while. I'm driving a loaner Civic...absolutely no comparison to my Pilot!
Happy and safe driving to all... |
