| I parked my 03 silver fog colored EX in the silver colored fog outside the post office last evening, and for safety I left the parking lights on - and of course they turned themselves off as soon as my back was turned :( Been a while since I've read the manual so I did that but it's not clear to me if it is really possible to use the parking lights while the vehicle is parked and locked. Help? |

| The lights have an auto off feature to keep from draining the battery. |

| I believe you have to turn the lights off, remove the key, then turn the lights back on, if you want them to stay on.:4: |

That might work.
I don't think they are "Parking Lights" anymore. I think they are running lights or just markers.
Parking lights on European cars turn on just one side, and are usually activated by the turn signal switch. |

I was curious, so I checked. No matter what I tried, the parking lights went out automatically after a few seconds. The only things I didn't try were leaving the key in the ignition, or leaving the door open. Both of those should work, but I wouldn't recommend it. ;) |

Looks like climbing out the window would be the other option  |

If you leave the key in the ingnition, the lights stay on. (engine off)
Honda didn't think this one through. We should be able to leave parking lights on when parked!
The only option appears to be the hazard lights. |

| I keep a set of these in each car - no batteries required. |

There needs to be a way to leave the parking lights on. In many places it is illegal to drive with just parking lights on...they are supposed to mean you are PARKED! Yet Honda makes no provision to leave the parking lights on when parked and the vehicle is unattended. Screwy.

Why would you not use your Hazard lights?
A car with park lights LOOKS the same from the rear as a car with head lights on.
That is dangerious in fog. |

Uh, head lights white, rear park lights red, how does that look the same ? Oh, maybe you mean if parked against traffic? That's a violation in CA. |

Sorry, I guess I took my stupid pill this morning. Do you mean it's dangerous because
a) viewed it from the rear an approaching driver sees it has red lights on the back
so:
b) most people would assume it has head lights on at the front because it has red lights on at the back
so:
c) most people would assume a car with headlights on is moving
so:
d) they would rear end it because they assume it's a moving vehicle in front of them
rather than:
e) rear end it because they couldn't see it at all
?? |

Yep, and in fog they may try "folowing it" instead of staying between the lines and missing you all together! |

Ah, good point. My roommate in college pulled off the highway on to the shoulder during a blizzard and got rear ended by another car who thought he was following the traffic.
He should have put his hazards on. |

This happens to truckers all the time! The pull over to the side of the road to snooze and BAM someone that shouldn't be on the road or has trouble seeing as clearly as they should or is not as much attention as they should or...or...runs right into them!
That is why in lots of places it is becoming illegal to stop a non broken down vehicle on the shoulder. |

Maybe you are parked but are not a hazard? Case in point-went out to look at the Leonids metoer shower the other night. Was parked on a dead end deserted road. Wanted some light to indicate a car was there but did not want LOTS of blinking BRIGHT light to distract and interfere with meteor watching. And BTW the car was POINTED toward the only direction another car could come from.
Besides in Illinois parking lights are REQUIRED. Kinda tough to comply when Honda decides to rewrite automotive tradition and make the use of parking lights impossible.

And N-Jay of ALL people being in Illinois should know this! |

mikey159's made me think of something I just read this in Reader's Digest "All in a Day's Work":quote: Don M. Rugee
I had just pulled over someone for driving under the influence when another car pulled up behind us. I sopped what I was doing and ventured back to see if the driver needed assistance.
"No, I don't need any help," he said, reeking of booze. Then, pointing to the flashing cherry top on the roof of my cruiser, he continued, "I just stopped for the red light."
At least the second guy stopped, you hear stories on the news about cops and citizens getting killed like that. |

| Maybe this is the solution to the parking/running light issue. Just install some optional parking lamps: |
