Deer collision with new 05 Pilot! Just me? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I need some support!!!!
We hit a deer (at least a 6 pointer) on Tuesday night.
Our new 05 Pilot has less than a 1k miles and I have not made a payment yet.
NBC news just had a special tonight on how many deer hits have happened in the last several months and how much it is costing the auto insurance industry and our rates.
I love my new Pilot! Just makes me sick to see it like this.

I just wanted to blow off some frustration....

Thx!

New to the group!

That is horrible to hear! There does appear to be more deer around southern NH lately. My in-laws have a place way up north and the appears to be more moose up there as well.

Hopefully the damage is minor and can be repaired easily and quickly!

Holy moly, kevmo! So sorry to hear about your accident with your brand new Pilot. Hope nobody was hurt in the crash.

Too bad that your first post had to be under such unfortunate circumstance, but just make sure you choose a good and reputable bodyshop, not one that your insurance company chooses for you and I'm sure you'll have your Pilot back as good as new.

Thanks for the sympathy!
Once I get over this, I plan on being a positive contributor to the group!
The radiator and trans cooler took a shot as well!
The only good thing to hopefully come out of this is a better fog light install. I had some questions/concerns for the dealer when I picked it up and the fogs lights were not perfectly flush mounted to the bumper. Looked like crap in my opinion!

Here are a few pictures!

Sorry to hear about that.

I was up in northern Wisconsin last fall and noticed tons of tire skid marks all over the roads.

Not being from deer country, I didn't think much of it, until BAM I pegged a small dear one night at dusk in my wife's Camry.

Luckily my wife who was pregnant at the time was alright.

Oh, and Small Deer = Crushed Camry = $3000 Damage :3:

My wife was driving; she is 4 months pregnant with my 3yr old daughter in the back seat. Happen on a back road at low speed, around 35mph. No one hurt!!!!

The Pilot can be fixed or replaced but you can't put a price tag on your loved ones!

I'm guessing around 4k in damage.
I’ll let you know what the total was after its done. The body shop will have it for about 5-6 days.
Guess we will be driving the 96 Accord for the holiday!

Sorry to hear about wrecking your new baby.

Does anyone know if deer whistles really work? Contemplating a set for the Pilot before we do the road trip to visit the Grannies.

I don't think so according to www.deercrash.com.

I have a 92 Acura Legend, which I love. It has always been "My" car and my wife hardly ever drove it. It was never in an accident, notice I said "was". One night this last December my wife was driving home from a Xmas party and "SMACK" one dead 4 pointer. The wife was fine, shook up but fine. The car on the other hand had a nicely curled up hood and a badly dented radiator (Which I had just replaced because of a leak).

Cost for the repair: $4,500+, value of the car at the time of the accident: $4,200 (Insurance companies, go figure). The car looks like the accident never happened, however my wife wont drive the Acura anymore.

Keep your chin up, you're right your loved ones were not hurt. The Pilot can be repaired or even replaced. Hey did you bring home the deer. One of my friends hit one and called the state troopers and they asked him do you want to keep it. I guess it was deer hunting season time. Anyway my friend did not keep the deer.

I used to be a call firefighter in a small southern NH town and we had a regular rotating list of people (some of them on the fire department), that were called after animal strikes for removal of the carcass / bounty.

The oddest but fortunately not saddest accident, as he did very well because of his protective gear, was a motorcycle vs dear. He was able to lay it down just prior to the stike and took out Bambi's kneecaps and wound up on the soft shoulder. He had lower speed, leather, and good reflexes to thank.

Sorry to hear about this. I hit a deer about two weeks after I bought my RL in 1996. Caused about 5K in damage. This was my second deer hit. My first was in 1992 with an old Honda Accord. Nobody got hurt (except the deer) either time so I count myself lucky!

Have no fear about your Pilot, Im sure it will be fine after they fix it. My RL was fixed up like new, and is still going strong with no problems 115K miles later!

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's accident. I'm pretty sure a good reputable body shop can put back your Pilot as good as new.;) So...whatever happen to the deer?

Glad to hear all are okay. I'll say it....:needpics:. Curiosity I guess.

Everyone loves a good accident.

My whole heart is with ya!

Back in 1997, I bought a brand new Toyota 4Runner (it was 33k with no leather, no nothing!, it was back in 1997, when the 4runner was so so so hot everyone wants to grab one, dealer didn't want to negotiate etc etc).

Bought a car on September, cared it like a baby, drove it so gently, and then, not even reach a few hundred miles on the order, BAM!, the dear hit the driver side, and whole driver side pannels/doors need to be fixed!. I think it was at least 3k (or more) damage.

Then, after a year later, 1998 in a similar season around October, BAM! Again! the dear hit the passenger side on the SAME 4Runner, needed to replace the whole right side panels and doors....

The toyota dealer where I have my car fixed was so careless, rude, stupid, the car was not fixed well, and it started rust now and the driver side door is NOT well aligned. It is dirty cheap fix even though my insurance certainly provided a check of full amount.

I would say I am still suffering the damage that dear and dealer did on my car (rust problem, pealing off paint, rattling window etc etc...)

Glad that your loved ones are ok.... Car is car, it is transportation but it is also a protector of your family on the road, which will be eventually BEAT UP to protect you and your family... That is how I convince myself .....

I feel sorry for you.

I hit a deer in my 2000 Acura 3.2TL two years ago. I was just going about 20mph in the neighborhood and the darn thing just jumped infront of me. I hit the breaks the same time I hit it. The dear went flying about 15 feet ahead of my car from the impact.

By the time I got out of the car, she had already gotten up and ran into the woods without even a limp.

I was feeling real sorry for the Deer, until I got the estimate for fixing my car. They want $2,400 to replace the front bumper and hood, and one head light.

If you stood about 5-10 infront of the car, it would be hard to see the damage, except for the broke head lamp. The hood was shoved back about 1/2 inch as well as the right fender, but no dents!

Since I am already paying out the wazoo for car insurance, I found a private own body shop that does excellant work and charged me only $1,200 for the work ( I paid cash so I didn't have to file a claim on my insurance).

I've been thinking about getting a safari grill for the front of my 04' Pilot EX-L w/navi to protect it on the next hit.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident.
Glad that no one was hurt.
I also hit a deer a few years ago.

I was driving my 97 Honda Civic.

Fortunately I had Geico and they treated
the accident as a force of nature thing and
I didn't have to pay for anything. My insurance
didn't go up as well.

My hood, bumper and front headlights were
replaced.

This was on an on ramp going to the highway
at 1am. ( on my way home from work ).
Hit the deer on the right front bumper.

I was a little bit shaken up.

I considered getting the deer whistle but didn't.
Wasn't sure if it was effective or not.
But I do love bells and whistles ( pardon the pun)
on my vehicles ( working ones that is ).
nighthawkpilot
it really hits you when you have an event like this in a vehicle you like and care a lot, just like when we are just starting to borrow or run away with our parents car we don't want any of this fortuitous event to happen but it happens. the most important thing is you and your dear ones are alright, cars can be fix but not anyone of us. .have a safe thanksgiving to everyone

I was born in NH and lived there for roughly 40 years. Did a lot of hunting during that time. I hit 1 deer, RX-7, and that was N. of Peterborough. With the influx of flat landers in NH, hunting has been restricted and the deer flourished. Hunting also has been influenced by the blue state bleed over. In my home town, Hanover, you can't even discharge a gun anymore.
