Heads Up: 2005 and TPMS - Click HERE for Original Thread
beetle
Hi Folks.

Just got a 2005 EX-L Pilot. Just a heads up, I purchased a set of winter tires/wheels to put on the Pilot. Turns out the sensor for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is built into the original Honda wheel. If you put an aftermarket wheel on, it will disable TPMS and an orange warning light will appear on the dash. It's not serious, but slightly annoying.

Too bad Honda didn't go with a sensorless system like on the BMW (it uses an infrared beam to detect pressure changes -- thus can be used with any kind of tire/wheel).

Overall still pleased with the Pilot -- seems to be a very versatile car.

I may be an exception, but I really like the factory wheel, it's sturdy looking, clean lines and matches the bolt pattern so no off-center bolts.. :)

I like the looks of the factory wheel as well. I only went with another wheel set for ease of switching between snow tires and regular tires.

Unfortunately Honda does not even offer the 04 Chrome Wheel for the 05 Model! Mistake, nice wheel, hate to have to live with a light on the dash and also the ability to know there is a pressure problem that could be corrected. Read on the site that a lot of members would like to have the TPMS SYSTEM. Hopefully Honda will make a chrome wheel with TPMS VALVES SOON..........

So has anyone gotten around the TPMS with aftermarket rims for the 2005's? Are the sensors the band type that could be purchased from a dealer/aftermarkets part joint and fastened around the aftermarket rim? Or is it integral/built into the Pilot rims?
Silver Billet
I'm pretty sure that the tpms sensors are not an integral part of the rim, and that they can be taken off and installed on another rim. Most sensors on many manufacturers' vehicle are the same (eg. made by Siemans). At my work place, we've successfully transferred sensors on a RX-8 and Touareg (both identical looking). I'll know for sure when I get my new twenties but I might talk to my Acura tech friend to be safe.

I purchased some '04 Acura TL 17 X 8 wheels to mount on my 05 Pilot, after seeing them pictured on another posting. I called my Honda dealership and was told the valve stem TPMS sensors (the sensor pick-ups are located in each wheel well area) could not be removed and put on other wheels. Well, a 7/16" deep well socket removes them very easily, and they were installed in the Acura wheels without any problem whatsoever. I made sure to lube the inner rubber seal on the sensor before reinstallation, and leak checked them after mounting the new tires. I can only assume they are still working correctly, since I have no dash lights (TPMS) alerting me otherwise. I also read somewhere during my research of this that one problem with the sensors may be the tire mounted on the wheel may outlast the life of the battery in the sensor.

I believe there is a link to a chrome OEM wheels.Try search you might find it

Try letting some air out of one of the tires (have a way to fill it back up first!). If the sensor is working, it will let you know soon enough.

Hi all,

I'm new here, and finding lots of great discussions and information!

I've had the Pilot just 3 weeks now. At delivery the salesman showed me the metal valve stems and explained that they contained the pressure monitors.

I started to research winter tire & wheel packages on tirerack (since I think the OEM Goodyear Integritys will not be good in the snow) and actually called them with a question about the tpms. The guy there said they did not have an option for it, and that putting on wheels without the sensors would result in having the warning light on all the time. This seems to be confirmed by statenislandman above.

I later called the dealer (salesman) to ask the same question as was told that the warning light wouldn't go on. He also said the valve stems only fit OEM wheels and have to be preset to the recommend 32 psi. He stressed that there is a certain procedure that needs to be followed and that not all tire places know how to do it. I'm sure some or all of what he told me is pure bs.

I wonder if you could buy a set of 4 of these stems with monitor from Honda and then just install them in whatever wheels you have?

I was curious about this as well since I want to replace the normal spare on my ’05 with a full size one. From the other posts and the little research I’ve done the valve stem is part of TPMS when coupled with the receiver units mounted to the chassis.

The following come from the Majestic Honda website:

Just confirming it's BS -- I replaced the stock tires/wheels with a set from Tirerack (new wheels + Ice/Snow tires) and the TPMS light DOES go on and stays on.

It's annoying at first but after awhile you get used to it.

BTW I got Pirelli Scorpion Ice+Snow Tires. Very happy with them. Used them in a heavy snowfall (14 inches in about 1.5 hours) and they provided great traction and grip. Saw lots of other 4WD SUVs spin out of control, but the pilot with the Snow Tires did great!

Thanks, appreciate the confirmation.

FYI: The Pilot service manual says you're supposed to replace the nut and valve stem when you remove the TPMS sensor from the wheel.
It says the nut deforms when installed to the proper torque (3 ft-lbs). I guess that does something to the valve stem, and that's
why you have to replace that as well.

It also says that the wheels are "special", in that they have extra metal to counterbalance the TPMS sensor assembly.

Properly balancing the tire takes care of any imbalance that the sensor might create in an aftermarket wheel. Cheers.

Does anyone foresee(know of) any issues with retrofitting the TPMS sensors(stems) to the Acura MDX wheels?

Or Acura "S-Type" wheels?
HP2005
I am new to this forum. I just bought my 05 Pilot about 3 weeks ago and love it so far. I have questions about the TPMS. I bought a new set of Acura MDX wheels and tires and installed them on the Pilot. I did not use the valve stems from the original wheels. The TPMS light has come on about twice, briefly. Has anyone changed the valve stems or found a way to make these work? I really don't care about the TPMS as long as the idiot light will stay off thats fine. Woudl like to purchase the valve stems that will make tham work properly. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also have a full set of the 16 aluminum wheels and Good Year tires that came on the Pilot, and may be for sale. Thanks

Has anyone tried to locate the fuse for the TPM system? By removing this connection out of the system, it might extinguish your TPM light...

Just a thought after reading these posts...

I bought a extra TPM valve assembly for building up a full size spare ($37 for Manchester honda). The sensor is part of the valve assembly. The rim for the 2005 pilot has a different PN than the 2003 and 2004 rims. The dealer assumed it had to do with the TPM system on the 2005.

I had heard that many suspected the new rims had extra weight on the opposite side from the stem to balance the TPMS stem/sender.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

If so, if using an older rim from a Honda or Acura that wasn't originally designed for TPMS, you may have to use an inordinate amount of balancing weights on the rim *shrug*

The '05 rim is marked as a TPMS rim, so it probably has some extra metal to counterbalance the TPMS sensor. There are people that have moved the sensor to a non-TPMS rim and not had a problem, but I don't remember who.

I have noticed where some people use the Acura TL Wheels on the Honda Pilot. I like the looks of these wheels also but I put a set of Acura MDX 17 Wheels and Michelin Cross Terrains on my 05 Pilot. I also have a set of these Acura TL Wheels. My question is are the wheels off the Acura TL strong enough for the weight of the Pilot? I know these TL wheels are for a car and the Pilot is a SUV. I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks

Well, I too have seen a lot of folks fit the TL rim to the Pilot, and have not heard of any issues.

However, I do recall someone posting here that they have heard of some issues with the TL rim going "out of round" on the TL, much less a heavier vehicle like the Pilot... and was just passing the comment on to the Pilot community as an FYI.

With that in mind, even if not verified... keeping in mind that my goals are driven a bit more by the practical side than aesthetics, I chose the MDX wheel over the auto-spec TL wheel.

If you don't plan to do any towing(I do), and will only use the Pilot in an urban environment, maybe the TL wheel will be fine, especially if one's priorities are more toward the style end of the spectrum.

I chose to play it save though, and went with the MDX wheels when our OEM Honda wheels were damaged. Believe it or not, I got a set of MDX wheels for less than I could get the Pilot EX wheels, even used.

YMMV of course.

. . . you're interested.

I had purchased a Tire Rack Winter wheel and tire package for my '04 Pilot (Modas w/ Michelin Artic Alpins. Hadn't really considered what it would mean with the '05 I traded up to.

So, when I switched over, of course the light went on. Drove me a little nuts, so I had the dealership break them down and install the sensors: $260, in all. Pricy just to get rid of a yellow light. But, hey! Maybe it will pay off some day.

As for the Acura wheels; I do know they make two types of sensors; for steel wheels and for alloys. Can't say whether they would fit any wheel, but I'd bet any Acura /Honda wheel would most certainly adapt.
