How many gallons are left in the 2005 Pilots when the fuel indicator light goes on? For that matter how many gallons does a tank hold? I read twenty gallons- is this accurate? The light came on and I thought I was running out of gas. I filled the tank with seventeen gallons. So does that mean three gallons when the light goes on?

| The '05 has a gallon larger tank than the previous models, but I always had 3 gallons left when the light went on. |

Honda seems faily consistant across models.
Reserve is 1 gal above "E", and "E" is 2 gal above dry. |

There has been 2-3 gallons left in my '05 when the low fuel light has come on. |

| Okay, I will go along with most others. A 20 gallon tank, and my light comes on with 2.7 gallons left, just warning enough to get a bank loan to fill the tank. |

According to Honda, the 2005 has a 20.4 gallon tank. According to my fill-up records, I get about 17.5 gallons into it if I fill up shortly after the light comes on, so yes, you should have 3 gallons +/- left when the light fist comes on -- or 45-60 miles, give or take. |

| never gotten to that point yet, not sure if I am willing to take a chance on walking. I always fill it up when it gets to 1/4 tank. |

My family is a bunch of Fire Fighters so never letting it get below half has always been engrained into my thinking.. lol.... but the ONE time I did let it get down there I had exactly 2.5 gallons left, its an 05, so 17.5 gallons |

| usually its 3gallons...and the capacity of an 05 pilot fuel tank is 20gallons..... |

I put the nozzle in, and use the lever on it to auto fill until the pressure kicks it off. I don't top the tank off like I have in other vehicles--I usually just run it up to the next dollar, eg $48.00. I was coming home from the airport Mon and knew I was gonna need to tank, and only drove about 10 miles with the light on. The needle wasn't even really on the red mark. |

Quite a bit of miles left when fuel light goes on - at least 40 miles. So roughly 2+ gallons.
What I found interesting about this thread is some report filling up beforethe light goes on.... I mean, why make more trips to the gas station than you need too? I can't remember the last time I saw the inside of a gas station either! Pay at the pump is the best! |

Just being prepared in my case. I fill up just once a week when it gets to the half way mark. I run into situations almost weekly where traffic turns into 1.5 hours from my regular 20 minutes... dont want to be on the freeway here in LA with my light on and no access to gas, I see it all the time they are usually the ones causing the traffic jams. I have also been in two situations where we had earthquakes or fires and the power went out and I didnt have access to gas in my area for more than a day. My Dad is a Fire Chief and my brother is a Captn.. just grew up with this idea. I dont commute very far but your right it would be a hassle if I was filling up say 4x a week instead of 2. |

The best way to conserve fuel is to fill the tank half way only. With rocketting gas prices nowadays, you have to run your PILOT with lesser weight. If you fill it up to the max, you are adding extra weight to the car.
Not unless you drive in a remote places where the next gas station is 30-40+ miles away...

Interesting idea.
First you need to know how much gas is used per mile carrying the extra weight.
Then you need to know how much fuel is used getting fuel.
Then you can develop an equation to optimise when to fill up and how much to put in.
We will also need statistics on the increase in fuel used to get fuel when you are very low. (i.e stopping to get fuel when you normally would not have stopped)
Ah, to be back in Managerial Accounting class where all you needed to calculate was the optimum balance between "just in time" order quantity and "just in case" inventory. |
