| I'm looking for new wine choices under $20 a bottle. What are your favorites? |
|
|

do you have Trader Joe's down there....
they have some good cheap wines.... |
|
|

| No Trader Joe's here. It isn't so much the pricing as the brand. I'm bored w/ my brands and since there are so many, I know I'm missing out. |

| I enjoy Chard, Pino Grigio, Sauv. Blanc., and Cabs. I tend to like more woods-y (is that a word?) then fruity flavors. I'll take a look at the site. Thanks! |

Oaky, or smoky flavors?
Stumbled on a great Chard. Farallon 2002/2003,
Under $8, and incredibly smooth.
Good with a meal, but even better to sip while watching Fox News! :2: |

If you are just going to get drunk, then all you need is cheap beer (like a CNN viewer).
Wine is to be enjoyed. :2: :2: :2: |

Napa, the Disneyland of wine country. :) (J/K)
You really should try Sonoma.:4: :4: |
|

| Bullpup |
| It costs a little more than the price range you are looking for but Ridge ATP list. Great wines and you will get a lot of lesser known veriatals. A.Raffanelli is another one that is more expensive but a great winery to have. If you can, get on the mailing list. |

At the Smothers Brothers' winery in Sonoma they sell T-shirts that say:
Sonoma is for wine,
NAPA makes auto parts. :7: |

Everyone should include Monticello and Thomas Jefferson's wine cellar in their tour of Virginia Wineries.
Might as well toss in a visit to Old Dominion Brewery while you're at it. :7:
Then you need a chaser of Virginia Gentleman Bourbon.
ROADTRIP!:roadtrip:
Just be sure to have a designated driver. |

I'm in! Since my wife doesn't drink, I always have a desginated driver :7: as long as we take the Pilot and not the custom Ferrari :roadtrip: but since we've had kids we never go out anyway so guess I'm not in after all. :( |

I think I love all Sonoma, but you asked for favorites. For Summer, you won't catch me grilling without a glass of Rodney Strong Chardonnay Chalk Hill. About $15.
My favorite Merlot is from Markham out of Napa. About $20. They also make a fantastic Zinfandel. |

If you like a Zin, try any of the Sonoma Old Vines.
Although my favorite was a little place in central CA, Arroyo Grande region, Saucelito Canyon Winery, but I think that are gone now. |

For those of you from around the Carolinas, up to Jersey, this is the absolute best place to shop for wine. Total Wine. Many of their prices are below wholesale + you can buy online from the office, then dart in and pick it up on the way home. Lucky for me they are only 10 min. from the house :2: Here's a link.

I would be broke (but have one heck of a wine collection) if I lived that close! |

Just like you, I prefer the wood'sy taste of my cabernet until I tried the '01 cabernet sauvignon from Sebastiani Winery of Sonoma. It's bursting w/ fruit but the taste was fantastic. I'm also bias to '94 robert mondavi cabernet sauvignon unfiltered. |

I've still got two left of the six 01 Sebastiani Cabs I bought for $11, about $6 off per bottle . Like you, I tried it out at a dinner and loved it. |

I love Cabernet's and have never been disappointed with Mondavi's reserves. They have that "woodsy" flavor you're looking for. They also go very well with a quality cigar!!!
Also, CaliTerra wines, which are a joint effort with Mondavi and a winery in Chili are very good too.... and you can find good stuff from them for around 10-bucks!!!
Cheers!!!! |

Yes! And Mondavi's Chardonnay Reserve was great too, and runs about $20 a bottle around here.
Kendall-Jackson has a good Cav Sauv Reserve for $20 too.
Another winery that consistently puts out good stuff is HOGUE. I like alot of wines, usually prefer Gewurztraminers / Pinot Grigio, but lately have taken a liking to Cab Sauv, and the Hogue at $12/bottle was wonderful.
Has anyone tried the Hogue Genesis Cab Sauv? $25/bottle...I have one that I'm saving for a gathering with friends, but I've heard it's incredible. Might be a good one to try (?) It has a yellow label, Gold logo and a weird little guy on it. :) |

You have to watch Mondavi's lables carfully.
They will use the similar names for regional and California wines.
In general I find you can get better wines at better prices than Mondavi.
They are not quite Gallo, but sometimes I feel they are heading that way. |

I don't know, I've had some pretty good Gallo Sonomas at a great price. I'll also buy a bottle of Gallo's Italian Ecco Domani every now and then. Not bad for under $10. |

I grew up in Sausalito and still have many friends in the wine country up there. Most of them say one of the best kept secrets is
KUNDE at http://www.kunde.com/
I have yet to have a bad bottle of anything they make. Its been harder to find down in LA compared to the others, but well worth it and about 15/bottle |

I don't know, but 10 to 20 years ago, "Behind the Orange Curtain" was very popular saying.:4: :4:
Of course no one called it "The OC"! :3:
Maybe north of the LC (Lake-Cook) curtain would work? |
