My husband & I just bought an '03 Pilot about 3 weeks ago. We are really excited!
Are there any common problems to look for - it is a vtm-4 with about 77,000.
Thanks in advance! |

The most common real problem is the EGR valve.
Other than that there are a few nagging issues, but they won't bother you until we point them out.
There was 2 recalls that you should have the vehicle checked to make sure it is up to date.
Did you get it from a dealer? |

Yes, we bought it from a local Honda dealer.
Do you know anything about the noise in the back/front of the car during your first initial stop of the day? We heard that has something to do with the brakes adjusting themselves? It sounds horrible though! |

It has to do with a little bit of free-play in the brake pads.
It is normal, and it is annoying.
It happens when in the first stop after changing directions. (Usually noticed at the first stop sign after backing out of the driveway.) |

There is a service bulletin covering the addition of shims. You will have to tell you dealer that the noise occurs "frequently". If you tell them that only occurs on the first stop, they will probably not perform the service.
That's how I got mine done. Now, no more brake click noise. |

Congrats on your purchase! I too bought a 2003 Pilot a couple of months ago. I bought mine on Cars.com with 21,800 miles. Now all you have to do is "accessorize"!! Take a look at the various signatures on the website for info and check the accessory bulletin board!
Best of luck!

This is interesting. I have a "grinding" noise when I back out of my driveway in the morning and apply the brakes at the end of the driveway before turning the wheel. Is this the same issue?
Does anyone know where to find the service bulletin. What number?
Thanks a lot! |

It is TSB #04-019 |

After reading the bulletin, I'm not sure if that's my problem. For one, I wouldn't describe the noise as a "clunk." It's more like a grinding sound that lasts from the time I first apply the brakes until the time the vehicle stops at the bottom of my driveway. It also doesn't have to do with changing direction, as mentioned in the TSB. It just happens when I back out of the driveway, when I apply the brakes, before I actually turn the wheel and pull out into the street. |

You are probably dealing with 2 possibilities:
1. ABS self-check - happens when you first reach about 7mph in any direction
2. Oxidation on brake pads / discs - especially if they were wet when you last drove the Pilot.
Neither one is a problem.... |

Number one sounds like it's it. The sound is similar to when the ABS are activated on a slippery surface.
Definitely not number two, because it happens every time.
This is the first vehicle I've had with ABS, so I'm not used to this happening.
Thanks for putting my mind at ease! :) |

Check you rotors and pads right away.
Are they scached up, you could have a bad pad.
or,
The brake pads have wear indicators that rub against the rotor when the pad is thin to make noise to warn you. |

It only happens when I brake at the end of my driveway, when I'm leaving my house. It doesn't happen any other time, so I don't think the brakes need replacing. |

It takes very little moisture to build up some surface rust.
Rain or just high humidity will do it. |
