Hubby and I went to check out the '06 Pilots this weekend. Local dealer doesn't have any, so we drove to the next closest one (one of those huge "mile of cars" type of dealerships) and immediately saw two dozen '05s lined up at the front of the lot. Waaaaay in the back were four '06s, so we went to take a look. They were fully prepped and washed and looking good. No salespeople came around, so we headed back to the building. Then a salesman (let's call him Ted) popped up and asked if he could help us with anything.

"We're looking for an '06 Pilot."
"Sorry, we don't have them in yet."
"Um, yes you do. Right over there."
"Really? Wow! They must have just now come in!" (Um, yeah, and they rolled off the truck completely prepped too... I'm pretty sure Ted wanted to steer us toward that big crop of '05s. )

So Ted unlocked one and we took a look. Very nice. New unperfed leather looks so much better. And contrary to what I'd read here, you do *not* lose the sunglasses holder with the conversation mirror. Tap it once to get the mirror, tap it again to get the sunglasses holder.

I opened the back and noticed a cargo tray. Having not seen a dealer add-on sticker, I innocently asked "Is the cargo tray standard now?"

"No, it's not. With the Pilots we add a cargo tray, mud guards, and wheel locks. And we like to ask about $1000 for those. If someone throws a fit, we'll take them off, but since the cargo tray and mud guards are worth about $500 each, it's really a good deal for you."

Yes, he really did say $500. Each. I just smiled and said "Okay."

So we start talking about when we'll be ready to buy. I explain that we're not planning to buy soon, since we have my CR-V as a trade-in and I'd like to be able to buy the Pilot for the trade plus $X. (I'm actually prepared to pay $X plus $1000, but I wanted to start low). And know he probably can't meet that price right now.

"We could probably go down about a thousand (so, after the thousand bucks worth of cargo tray and mud guards, that brings us to MSRP?) We could go down more on the '05s, because Honda is helping us with those, but not on the '06s. The thing is, with gas prices, people really aren't buying the SUVs. So your CR-V isn't going to be worth as much as it would have been otherwise." (Dude. The V gets better gas mileage than the Pilot. So if the V is penalized due to gas prices, the Pilot should be penalized even more, and it will be a wash.) Ted waves over another salesman. Or maybe sales manager; he seemed pretty slick. "Bob, tell them about the CR-V market."

Bob says "Oh, they're great. Very popular. Can't keep them on the lot. I've got *one* now, and every day I get calls asking if I have any used ones." Bob obviously guessed wrong about what Ted wanted him to say. :21:

Ted asks how we figured the value of our trade-in. "Here's how you really need to do it. Go to the Kelley website and, if your car is in excellent condition, check 'good.' If it's in good condition, check 'fair.' Then, don't check *any* of the popup ads. That will tell you the amount that we can really give for your trade. (Popup ads? I don't know what he's talking about. Does he mean don't check any of the optional equipment? Meaning I shouldn't mention that my car has a multi-disc CD, moonroof, and automatic transmission? And that will give me a more realistic quote? I don't think so, Ted!)

Then Ted finds out the V has 48K miles. "Well, since you're about to hit 50,000 miles, that's a big number. That's when your Kelley Blue Book number goes waaaaay down. So, I'm not trying to rush you into anything, but as the price of the Pilot goes down, the value of your trade is going down too."

"Yes, but tax-wise, I'd rather get less for the CR-V and pay less for the Pilot." (Also, I checked KBB, and the difference between 48K and 51K is about $300. Not a big deal if it means I can save $2K or so on the Pilot by waiting a few months).

Ted has run out of ammo. He ends with a little spiel about how dishonest the other area Honda dealers are, and "As long as you're honest with us about what you want, we can make a deal."

Yeah, Ted. As long as you're honest.

Anyway, to those of you shopping for an '06, be sure to get your dealer to match that fabulous cargo tray/mud guard/wheel lock deal! :21:

Maybe you could get a bottle of touch up paint thrown in - I'm sure it's worth at least $500............ . Sounds like typical sales BS.

Wow, I am surprised you did not get the "What can we do to get you into that car today" speach at the end!

We got a lite version of it earlier. I'd told him I wanted Sagebrush, and the one we were looking at was Steel Blue. "So, if this one were Sagebrush, you'd be driving it home tonight?" That's when I started the "No, because I know you're not ready to sell it for what I want to pay" part.

And he did not ask you what you wanted your monthly payment to be?

What a slacker!

Nice to see you found an "honest" dealer. I'm really surprised you didn't jump all over that deal.

$500 for mud guards is just a wee bit high. I can "let" you have them for $400 and I'll even throw in free shipping if you act now within the next 10 seconds, supplies are limited. :p

So according to the liar/salesman they JUST came in but they already had the dealer add ons! I love catching salespeople in lies. I went and looked at an 06 yesterday and the sales person kept trying to tell me about the "New" Pilot until she realized that I have done my research. Funny!

You didn't tell him you honestly wanted a FREE Pilot? :4:

Wow...sometimes I guess I forget what a good experience I've had buying my last two Honda's...I'm glad I didn't run across "Ted", or I might be driving something else.

:D $500 mud guards?! Some salesmen are just too funny, haha...

Ah,

The frustration.

I have come to the conclusion, you just have to be able to walk away and continue to do so, and you will get a much better deal.

When I was looking for a Pilot, one Dealer wanted $1999 for the towing package. That's right. I paid $550 delivered for mine and installed it myself in about 3.5 hours. Hmmm, $550 plus 3.5 hours shop time at $100/hr is $900, $1100 profit ain't bad.

Oh yeah, mudguards, pinstripe, paint and scotchguard protection was $1299 on the LX and $1599 on the EX, huh? (both cloth). $100 worth of crap. Yeah, "we'll throw that in if you buy today at $100 less than MSRP". Keep Dreaming.

My personal favorite thing to do on color (based on info from a buddy that was a car salesman) is when the guy asks what color I like, ask him if the color matters on the price (sometimes it does, but lets say it doesn't in this case). He will usually say know. Then, reply, well this maroon looks nice (when actually they have a ton of them and oviously aren't moving them, and the you can't find a blue one in 100 miles and that's what you want and they have one). Take the test drive, start haggling, and if you get to the price you want to pay and he asks you what he can do to seal the deal, say, I think I decided I like the blue one better. When he replies it's a hot color and he can't afford to let it go, remind him he told you there is no price difference.

Remember, they are there to make money, some people they make $100 on, and some they make thousands on.

Buying any car when it's just out is a real pain.

I like my father's advice, buy anything in January or February that you can negotiate on. People have less money then (after buying the "GI Joe with the King-Fu Grip"), so sellers are more apt to make a deal. I have found this to be the case for many items.

Tracy, you need to send of copy of your post to the dealer. I had one fruitcake that got mad when he found out I bought at a better price. HE told my wife I hadn't given him a chance. (Hhhmm, 4 emails trying to clarify things where he wouldn't answer the question isn't fair?LOL) I wrote up my experience and emailed it to his email and to the dealership. Bet he tried to intercept it before the manager got it!

I have realized that if you walk in the lot, you are a pigeon waiting to be shot. The Internet is the way to go but you have to be willing to do your homework (Like I know you are). Dealers must hate informed people like HondaPilot.Org folks.

The sad thing is this must work, or they wouldn't try it.

Tracy, what a great post, thanks for the chuckle. My favorite dealer line is...

"...and what do you want to pay per month"

Me: "Nothing".
Dealer: " You're kidding, right?".
Me: "Nope. You asked, I answered - ask a stupid question... you know the rest".

That one always lets them know who's boss, right off the bat! :D

Welcome to the club. The 1st dealer tried to rob me out of thousands and the 2nd dealer bested the 1st by $3,400.

Subaru Forester lease buy out was $12,900(3 yrs old and 21K miles). KBB value was about that......... I can only give you 10K for the vehicle since it's a niche market and it'll take me months to sell it. Yeah buddy, I've been in this town 11 yrs, not minutes. I see Foresters all over the road. I literally walked out laughing after several more sleazy tactics with another salesman, and the..... oh no..... not the sales manager..... anything but him....I better sign right now and seal this horrible deal.

The next dealer, where we just happened to buy the Accord in 98, paid the entire lease off, and beat the price of the Pilot by $500 :2:

before I bought my 03 Pilot last Feb...I was actually looking for a deal on a used XL-7 (no jokes please!). I had a CRV to trade...the Subaru/Suzuki salesman actually told me that he couldn't give me good deal on the trade because he has to give the 'better deals' to customers who frequent their business (e.g., a guy who's supposedly bought 12 cars from them over the years). In other words, I can't get a 'deal' because they go to their most favored customers. Us 'regular po folks' get to subsidize those who can already afford to trade in every two years. I couldn't believe my ears....
