Embarrassing Seatbelt Problem - Click HERE for Original Thread
thegov3
Ok, I have not seen this problem on the site and did a search in several different ways. If it has been posted before, my apologies to all.

The problem is simple; the solution to date is not. The driver’s side seatbelt is reversed so that the latch on the belt faces the pillar rather then the seat when it is unbuckled and hanging next to the seat. The white manufacture’s tag on the belt also faces the pillar. The passenger side of the Pilot (and every other car I own) has the latch on the belt is facing inward towards the seat so that when you grab it, it is easier to reach and, more importantly, the BELT is not twisted when you put it on. The tag on the passenger’s side belt is facing the seat (unlike the driver’s side).

Before you say to yourself, “Gee, what an idiot, just untwist it”, I have tried and tried, thinking it was some sort of Chinese magic trick to solve. No mater what I do it will not untwist and go on properly. I have tried everything. This is my wife’s Pilot, and is a mere 4 months old. She drove it home from the dealer; as such I have no idea if it was this way from the start. Has anyone seen this simple, but ridiculously frustrating problem before?

I do not believe it is possible for the belt to get turned inside latch portion, is it? This is so embarrassing. Any help is appreciated.

Take Your Pilot into the Dealer they will gladly fix the problem. I had a similar problem with another car, the dealer disassembled the belt and re-assembled the belt removing the problem. Seat belt never run out of warranty the car manufacture will fix any problem with a belt to avoid future legal problems.

The latchplates on my mom's Civic get turned around every so often, and it's easy to just fold the belt over and force the latchplate back over. However, it sounds as though you've tried this. I'd just take it back to the dealer and have them fix it. Honda has a lifetime warranty on their seat belts, and you don't want that twist in there. It actually decreases the strength of the belt about 10% (IIRC).

I have a belt like this too, and you CANNOT simply spin that thick nylon belt around in the hardware (not in the Pilot anyway) Probably designed to not spin, like the older cars belts do...which is great if they put the thing on right in the first place!

I'm taking my pilot in asap to fix this since it's on one of my kids' seats. How the heck do these things sneak through QC?

Yes it is embarrassing. "See my great Pilot I love it! Oh wait, they put my latches on bassackwards."
More embarrassing is not noticing it until almost three years later (In my defense, I had my daughter's car seat latched there for years) Still feel pretty stupid.

Thanks for the replies. I now know that I am not alone in my frustration with the seatbelt issue. I will take into the dealer ASAP.

I don't think it's a manufacturer's defect. Excuse the pun, but by some weird twist, they end up like that. One of my passengers did this to my third row driver's side belt (and I know it wasn't like this previously). It took some patience and careful folding, but I managed to get it turned the right way around. The Pilot is not the first car I've had this problem with either.

Don't. I had a Chevy Corsica I bought used, 1 year old and I had it for about three and a half or four years and one day I accidentally found that there was a lever to manually tilt the driver's seat back!!! Talk about stupid. At least yours was in back. Mine issue was the driver's seat!

It has to be a manufacturer's defect. I have tried to twist it (or untwist it) in every way possible. I have had the same problem on other cars too, but in this case, I could not correct it....no way...no how.

Have you tried to fold it over onto itself? I promise, this is exactly what the dealer will do. Fold it vertically, flat against itself (basically fold it in half) and then slide the belt until it's flat again.

Hard to explain, maybe I'll have a minute to take some pics. I'm not sure, but I think I learned how to do this from my Accord's manual.

BTW, Overland Park is a beautiful area. I stayed in the Hilton Garden Inn there the last time I was in Kansas City. Welcome to the forum.

I'm going to try that...It sure as heck doesn't seem like it's possible in the Pilot, I've tried before and gave up. I'll try again, it sure beats sitting at the dealership with 3 kids.:D Where's the mom tearing her hair out smiley?

OK, here's a pic of the driver's belt. Start the fold just before the buckle. Position the buckle as parallel to the belt as possible (this gives you more clearance) and then side the buckle onto the fold. Make the fold at an angle as pictured so that as you slide the buckle, the fold gets deeper and deeper. Keep sliding the buckle until you clear the fold - congrats, your buckle is now reversed on the belt.

It takes some practice, but as you can see, it *is* possible. I'd bet the dealer does this in much the same way. Like I said, I think I learned it from one of my car's manuals - I think it might have been the Accord? Who knows - but I wouldn't be surprised if you found it in this condition again in the future as I've seen it occur inadvertantly on several occasions.

THANK YOU! CWA107

Your picture and description worked. I am utterly amazed. I stand corrected. It can be fixed by the average Joe and is not a manufacturers defect. It must have gotten reversed sometime after delivery. I just fixed it in two seconds using cwa107's instructions. This Forum just saved me several hours of time and a few bucks worth gas by not having to go the dealer! THANKS!

BTW CWA107, I agree, Overland Park, Kansas is a beautiful place if you can stand to live where the state motto is "As ignorant as you think" (the real motto is "As big as you think"). Some politicians in Kansas give us a bad name. Just ignore them. OP and Kansas in general are a great place to live and raise a family despite those ignorant far-right religious wackos in the state capital.

Yeah, I love the midwest. Fortunately my company owns several small companies in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, so I'm able to visit now and again. The last time I was there, I ate at Fiorella's Jack Stack - awesome BBQ! :4:

LOL I "caught" one of my seatbelts starting to do this on it's own. I suppose they were not wrong in the first place. I still haven't tried to fix it, but I'm sure it'll work now. Thanks cwa107 :claphead:

No problem - let me know how you make out. Isn't it amazing how they manage to get that way? I think I've used my third row seats maybe twice since I've had the Pilot - and both times were on a short drive. On one of those two short occasions, someone managed to reverse one of the belts. As much of a struggle as it is to straighten them out, it's amazing how they can get backwards by accident.
