My 2003 Pilot has what I am not sure if it is a problem or not. I am pretty attuned(anal) to anything with my truck including new sounds and noises and this is driving me crazy. the problem is intermittent and I had it at Honda yesterday and of course did not happen while there.
When I turn over the starter, there is what at best I call a clunking or thumping sound for an instant when the starter is engaged. it happens either when the AC is on or off and again, it douse not happen all the time. the sound seems to be coming from the left side under the hood. I am not the only one in the family who has heard it and so it is not me.
I am also hearing when idling a very low "gurgling" which may be related or not.
Any ideas are appreciated.
thanks in advance. |

I've been experiencing startup problems myself. I did a search on the site under "startup" and it seems to be a common problem.
Only thing with my sound is that it has nothing to do with my A/C being left on, which seems to be the case in the majority of people reporting the "thunk." My car starts up fine in the morning, but after a day of sitting out in the hot weather, when I'm getting ready to head home and start the car, it almost feels like it's about to stall or that it barely catches. Just today, it was the same, only after the car started, it was accompanied by a metallic "thunk" or "pop," however one can describe it, that came from the left side of the engine compartment. Sounded really bad.
Does anyone on the board have similar experiences unrelated to the A/C being left on?
I might swing by the dealer this weekend to get it checked out. I hope it's nothing serious :( |

After giving my dealer a two page description of the noises I was hearing and what I thought it might be, the problem was traced to a loose exhaust connection. Once they nailed that down all the noises went away and were obviously related. This did not cause any performance issues though.
This was a pain in the butt to find and took two trips to get it fixed. |

| Same thing happens with my 2005. I have the metallic sound that F1 described above on random starts. |

| I have found this on everyones Pilot I know. It is the a/c clutch engaging after startup. Dealer says normal, but I have to think it is not the best for the engine or a/c clutch. |
