new '05, road debris! also pass airbag off Q - Click HERE for Original Thread
SUVfan
hi everyone!

my wife and I just picked up our '05 this weekend at a great price since the '06s are out. We picked up one of the last couple 05s on the lot.

Anyway, the evening we picked it up, my wife drove us home locally. We were going about 55mph when out of nowhere, in front of us were a set of four construction cones grouped together! My wife didn't avoid them in time and BAM! like a huge bowling ball hitting pins we snagged them all from the passenger front. It was dark so we couldn't really see, but we heard awful groaning noises (we're assuming that it was the cone bending and crushing into our fender? or getting caught on the mudguards? something worse?) My wife was pretty upset and I put down the window and looked behind us and it seems that all four cones were scattered behind. Here's the kicker: on our way up our driveway, we hear a thud and as I get out of the car, there is a orange cone on our driveway!

Well, I don't know Hondas very well, and I didn't even get a chance to acquaint myself with our Pilot before its first battle scar so I'd like some help! I know they are just rubber cones but it still hurt to hear it hitting our new car. Plus one cone apparently snagged onto the car somehow and we dragged it home another 20 miles or so. Just wondering if there's anything I should check for in terms of possible damage? Suspension or drivetrain? Fender lining? anything on the undercarriage I should keep an eye out for? I still haven't checked for body damage either. :( I know I'm being a bit over protective, I mean after all, it's a SUV so some cones shouldn't do too much damage, but I guess the fact that our car was only a couple hours new that the whole situation freaked us out and got me a bit paranoid that something might have been damaged. Thanks for any advice on this!

One last question I have is regarding the pass. airbag. Anyone know what weight is required before the off light flickers on? My wife drove the car to work this morning and she put her stuff on the passenger side and told me that the "off" light would go on and then go off intermittently so I was thinking maybe her stuff was just on the threshold of the minimum weight for the sensors to detect? Or is there a possible problem with the sensors?

Thanks for any information and help with my new Pilot! It's only been 3 days but we've grown quite fond of the car so it hurts more that those damned cones might have hurt our baby!
:)

congrats on the pilot.... remmebr the rule on the board ..
:needpics:

anyways I personally doubt anything would have happened with the rubber cones....besides possible scratches... which you shoul dbe able to cheack for...

are you talking about the side airbags...? the sensor goes off is someone/something is too close to thoses( not weight)... my guess is that the "stuff" your wife put was moving close and then away from the door causing the light to come on and off...

I thought the sensors in the seat would also turn off the front passenger airbag if the person was under the weight threshold.

I've only see the light on after start up during systems check and if the seat belt is fastened but nobody is sitting there.

The airbag sensor is weight activated, but it requires a little weight just to turn it on.

- If no weight is on the seat, the airbag is on (light off)
- If (this is a guess) 5-75 lbs of weight is on the seat, the airbag is off (light on)
- If more than 75 lbs of weight in on the seat, the airbag is on (light off)

They have it so that a little bit of weight is required to activate the light (turning the airbag off), so that the light doesn't stay on when there is no passenger.

I experience the same thing when I have stuff in the passenger seat. I think that your wife's experience with the light going on and off might be due to weight shift from braking/accelerating. Anyway, nothing to worry about.

The sensors will pick up electrical emissions, cell phone, lap top.
Please read your owners manual. :)

SUVFan welcome to the board!
I think you should be okay with the undercarriage, but take a flashlight and have a good look to make sure.
My sensor comes on, when my son shifts his weight too much to the side looking out the window. When there isn't enough weight, it turns the bag off.

Congrats on the new Pilot, and hope the rest of your experience is less stressful.

We are a good bunch here CONEcerned for your well being (couldn't resist)

Thanks for the advice everyone, I appreciate it!

Well, I cleaned up the car and found some scratches on the bumper, side molding and a weird "dimple" in the paint on the lower side of the passenger side door. I'm guessing these are all from those damn cones. Can't really see the damage unless I'm up close, so I'll just ignore them :D

Undercarriage looked ok, but then again I never got a chance to see what it looked like before, but nothing looked broken or loose.

I tried the pass. airbag off myself and it is quite sensitive to misc. items put there.

No pictures, sorry! Our 4-yr old niece accidentally broke our digital camera the weekend before we picked up the Pilot and we're still shopping for a nice replacement.

Hope I can find the time to post some more here! (well, not in the "Problems" forum, hopefully!) :)
