So I pulled an idiot move, and sent my electronic key through the washing machine. Apparently they were not made to hold up to this amount of soaking + agitation. (FYI, they do hold up to a dip in the pool after you forget that you have your key in your swim trunks :D ).
So I went to the dealer to see about a replacement, and he quoted me $50 for the key, and $150  for the labor. Are they kidding?!?!? There is no possible way that it takes two hours labor to cut and program the key to work with my Pilot.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to program the key myself, or a better alternative (e.g. sending the key to someone to be programmed...I don't know if you can just send the code, or if you have to be in proximity of the Pilot to program it.)
I hate only having one key, but $200 for a replacement seems outrageous! |

| My son lost my valet key and the dealer quoted me $100 to replace ($40 for key plus $60 to program). Then when they they were apologizing for giving me really bad service on a warranty repair (rear spoiler), I asked if they could waive the labor charge on key programming. Not only did they do that, but the parts person used a non-Honda key that only cost $30. It only took the parts person a couple of minutes to program, so you may be able to get that charge waived or reduced. $30 is still a lot for key, but it's better to have a spare before you need it. |

| If it eases your pain any, a replacement key for my RX 330 is about $300; I haven't had to do it, but that's the going rate to cut the key and program it and the immobilizer chip. |

| Why $300 Should have been $330...:2: |

| Can you buy just the '05 key/remote and transfer the old key to the new one and only worry about the programming of the transponder. You can program the new remote to your car. Check this thread for some additional info. |

Cool, thanks for the link. I did a couple of searches, but did not see that thread.
It looks like if my immoilizer chip is still intact, I might not need to have the chip reprogramed. I will order a new key, and take the remote unit out of it, and try it in my old key (after programming the remote unit). If that works, all I will need is to get the key cut.
I'll let you know how it goes. If anyone knows of a place online where I can order an '05 key for cheap, let me know. |

I tried to put my other key's remote unit into the key that went through the Wash Cycle, and it works like a charm. So it looks like it was only the remote unit that got fried, and that the immobilizer chip still works fine.
I'll call hondaacuraworld tomorrow to see about another key. Thanks for the help guys. |

| A few years ago I put the keys and separate remote through a wash and dry cycle, and everything worked fine; no lint on the key, either. :p I believe it was the Pilot's key and remote, but can't exactly recall. |

| Tim for the site sponsor to step up to the plate and help out. Knowing manufacturers to program a remote is usually a case of keep the door open, jump up and down, turn ignition on and off 10 times, open the hood, turn on the Stereo, close the door hit the horn....all in under 3 seconds.... |

That'll never work. You left out the "rub your belly-pat your head three times" part.:D |

ON my 2001 Accord, the manual has all the gyrations to go thru programming a new key, but the CPU will only ever accept 6 keys total before you have to replace the CPU.
You started with 3, you should have 3 more.
The price is ridiculous. Friend had a Saab and called around since he travels a lot, found a dealer that did it for free, had to pay for the key of course. He said it took 10 minutes and they used a programming tool. |

It turns out that I didn't need the entire key replaced after all. Tim at HAW found the part to just replace the keyless entry portion of the key (see pic). I opened my old key up (which had gone through the wash), replaced the keyless entry part, and reprogrammed it using the instructions from this thread:

The new one works great! :2: |

So even though you washed the key, you weren't taken to the cleaners for the new one.:D |

hi...so i just purchased a used 2005, and it only comes with 1 key (with the immobilizer). don't know what happed with the other keys (btw, was it suppose to have 2 immobilizers and one non-immobilizer?)
i'd like to get another immobilizer key, but i'm a bit confused with the various posts on 2003 vs. 2005 keys.
1) how much is the immobilizer key itself? and is it sold only at the dealership?
2) does the key have to be cut at the dealership, or can any locksmith do it?
3) does the dealership need to program it, or can i program it myself using the instructions i found here?
http://www.hondapilot.org/forums/sh...ey&pagenumber=2
thanks for your help!

I also just realized that i may be mixing apples and oranges. is the programming noted in the link above ONLY for the keyless entry programming, not the immobilizer feature??
or is it also for the immobilizer?
basically, i'm trying to figure out if i absolutely need to go thru the dealership to get an additional key for my 2005.
thanks! |

| While on the subject of keys. I have wondered about just having a key without the programing just to get the door open so I could get at that expensive key laying in the console or in my coat etc. Or do you need the programing for the lock or security system? |

To answer the previous two posts, the 2005 key is different than the 2003, it cannot be cloned, it must be programmed.
You can get the key from a Honda dealer, no aftermarket equivalent is available. I got mine from Majestic Honda for $31.
A well equipped automotive locksmith can cut and program the key. He needs the right equipment, but many today have it.
There is also a plain key available for the Pilot, it's the same as the Accord. Just a plain piece of metal that will easily fit in your wallet, to use as an emergency key. |

Hello,
I read your post regarding a replacement key. I recently bought a 2003 Pilot but it had only one key. I later found out that it would cost me about $200 in total for another key. Is there any way I can get around this?
Thanks
Rich

Try another dealer.
$200 sounds a bit high |

| The 2003 Pilot key can be cloned or programmed, and the blank is available in the aftermarket. Find a locksmith who does automotive work, they can definitely do it for less than $200. |

| Goodson in Houston sold me the replacement and did not charge to program. Took all of 10 seconds to do the programming, so no way they should charge you. |
