Tim, I either received the wrong part number -or- FERN is no longer the SAME fern between the 2005 and 2006.
The pictures below highlight my problem. I'm wondering if I received the right part. The invoice says I was supposed to receive A02ZX but it looks like I got A02ZF?
Either way, this unit won't work for my FERN interior, how do I return it? It looked like it was shipped from Ray Lak's Accura? Anyway, let me know what I need to do to return it. It has never been installed. |

You got what was ordered, which is the Fern. I put the X in the part number instead of a bullet, because the very last digit is the color.....
Looks to me like your old one is gray, not fern. |

Hi Tim,
just got the order today. Problem is, the thing won't open or close/latch properly. I tried to test it first after opening it from the box. Several push and either it won't open or it would open all the way through [going to the glass compartment instead of the mirror]. Then I tried to close it, it won't latch after some push. It's not a one touch operation so far. I'm not sure if it would be the same after I install it or maybe a production issue with the springs and lock mechanism. can you verify with one of your units there?
thanks.

The mechanism is GRAVITY operated, you must hold it above your head in a position as if it were installed to test it. Works great if you let gravity pull the pin into position.
Tim, my interior is definately FERN based on all the documentation that I have from HONDA. Can you look it up by vin? Even the "myHonda" website where I enter the VIN says I have a FERN interior. Or better yet, could you compare the 2005 PN to see if it designates gray or fern?
Should I return this one and exchange it for gray? I hate to do this but either way this unit won't work for me :( |

I did test it the way it suppose to be. That's why i thought it might be a problem later on.

Yes, you can return it, but this is why I had urged people not to order until wwong's tested it, or figured out how and if it can work.
I understand that you have a fern interior, but the piece is gray. All I can do is go by the provided info. We didn't know what if anything of the 06 was different when everyone jumped in.
Any of you that have to make returns email me at hondacuraworld@aol.com . I would however urge that you wait until Wilson posts something, because if it ends up functioning, you guys are going to want them back. |
|

yup. I'll hold on it for now. I'll store it in the box for now until wwong gives the good report.
Tim, if you can grab hold of one, try to test them see if you get the same results.
thanks.

Sorry Tim. Didn't mean to be a bother, but what WWONG is doing has no impact on my problem. Honda says I have a fern interior, I ordered fern. Sorry, but this fern isn't the same fern that my honda has.
My unit works great, wish I could use it. Once again sorry, I know this is a pain for you. Email coming shortly. Thanks! |

| OK, Well, I I figured I would try installing the mirror. Well, So i thought. After removing the two screws, and about 20 mins of GENTLY tugging and jiggling. It wouldn't even budge. :8: So back in the screwes went. Hopfully someone else who has installed it can provide some guidence. Does the homelink need to first be removed? Tried prying that out, but didn't want to break it. |

According to RcRaiders, there are two additional screws under map light lenses. I have not received my kit so cannot be 100% sure, but I would check there.

Eventful = electrical trouble shooting, engine/transmission repair/replace, etc). Time: At first I thought it would take up a couple of hours of labor, however, it is only about fifteen minutes. Tools: 1 phillips screwdriver tip #2 and 1 slotted miniature screwdriver.
1. Turn off the map lights/light switch 2. Open the sunglasses storage holder all the way and removed the two screws 3. Remove the map lights lenses to get to the two hidden screws and removed the two additional screws (total of four screws), be careful and take your time because they are very easy to break at the clips 4. Gently pull down the console about 4 and reach in the back to remove the two power connector plugs 5. Pop out the map lights/HomeLink unit from the console and transfer it to the new console 6. Put everything back and test out the new conversation mirror function, map lights, and HomeLink. 7. Done.

Is it possible that Honda fitted the incorrect color on yours originally?
Its equally possible that Fern changed. People color preferences vary over time and adjustments to tints do happen |

I have grey interioy just like sactoroy. As you can see from his pics, the trim is not the same grey as the other gray trim in the car. It's more of a tanish-grey, in order to match the headliner. I looked at the headliner / sunglass holder in my wife's Odyssey, and it has the same color as mine; only her interior is Saddle. Is it possible that all interior colors use the same color headliner and sunglass holder? |
|

Looking at my interior and comparing it to the fern/grey pic someone posted earlier, I am pretty certain mine is fern.
If mine does not match though, I will post a pic and try to set up a trade here with someone who got the wrong color.

I have 05 EX-L SBP with fern interior color. My trim looks similar to the 2006 part color. It doesn't look like the 2005 part at all.

| You also cannot buy the whole assemly as another member suggested because it won't fit. Note the gap between the headliner and the conversation mirror? |
|
|
| wwong |
| That is because this metal braket is in the way. Also, the two screw holes do not line up. You also cannot take the conversation mirror out of the '06 braket and drop it into the '03 bracket. There is no way to modify it to fit. So, I'll be returning the conversation mirror to Tim. Any questions, let me know. |

That is why I posted the pics I did, to see. If you ordered FERN and yours matches, then perhaps the late 2005 models got the "new fern" and yours matches fine.
My interior is definately FERN. In sunlight, it has a greenish tint to it, but otherwise looks gray. My sunglass holder matches perfectly with the sunvisor extensions, the lower part of the dashboard, the leather seats and the plastic/vinyl surrounds on the seat.
FERN is no longer FERN unless I got the wrong part somehow, Honda may have mismarked my Box and Tim sent me what he thought was fern but is now olive?
I don't know, all I know is I was very dissappointed when I pulled out my holder and compared colors. My FERN is no different than any other FERN i've seen in the showroom, but I haven't looked at 2006's yet. :( |

WWong! Therefore my conclusion was right! It doesn't work!
My conclusion is right! Also, There are two connections the home link, voice nav. and the maplight assembly too. On the 2003 PILOT there are only one connection.....
I am sorry about that wwong...

Eric - I believe that the Fern that you will receive is a bit darker than the '03-'05 Fern. I got mine last Friday and that's what I got. Another member, Prijo, also had the same problem. I guess the '06 Fern is a different shade of Fern from the previous years... that *&%$ing sucks!

yes, it is noticeable. The sunvisor extentions are plastic and they are less than 1 inch away from either side of the mirror, when I put mine up there to see for myself if I could live with it, I couldn't. |

Perhaps someone who has both parts can compare the two and see if they have the same screw holes in the same places, that sort of thing. If it looks right there, then I would guinea pig this one! Worst case scenario - temporarily out 30$ and some time playing with the parts, no big deal.

| Oh well, I hate that this won't work for my '05 EX...I was looking forward to a quick, cheap, easy upgrade. Great feature, I wish they had thought of it a year earlier!!! |

|
| jjmhawk |
I got mine today and installed within 20 minutes. Talk about a great upgrade! I took down the two $2 mirrors used to look at the twins and can use the sun visors again. The installation is a no-brainer, but definitely be careful taking the lens off. I used a jewel flat head screw driver and a little patience, because they can be easily broken. After that smooth sailing, take out the four screws, lower the console, unplug the two wires attached to the homelink unit, pop out the homelink unit, pop it in the new bracket, plug the wires back in, raise the console, screw it in and pop the lens back on. A quick test showed homelink memory was fine which I was happy about since I have rolling code garage door openers and they are a pain to program. I think this point has been driven home, but I have saddle interior as well and the color matches fine.
My only minor grip is I need to push a little hard and towards the driver’s side to get the mirror to come down, but that is minor and may get better over time with use. |

Hey guys-
Same problem - the fern isnt a color match. But, I just had a dent guy fixing one on the hood - it came that way - and he said he does dye matching on interior parts. Hmm. Gonna call him and see what it would cost to do. If he does a good job, I will see if he wants to do a bunch at once, maybeI can hook you guys up. Just pitch in and order me one of everything from wwong... (kidding)
I will call him and see what he thinks, probably do it (I cant imagine it being that expensive) and let you guys know about it.
Eric
Modifying to add...
I spoke with the lady who does the dye matching. She said $45 to do mine alone. Once I explained there might be several other people interested, she mentioned she could cut that price down to around $25 or lower since the bulk of the work is matching the dye up.
This assumes 2 things -
Your fern interior is the same as mine. It may be different, I dont know.
Anyone here might be interested to ship thier piece, pay for the dying and shipping back.
Let me know by next tuesday if anyone is interested. I can take before and after pics to show what I end up doing. What the dye tech said was that she would mix a larger batch of dye on mine, and save it for whomever else needed the work. I am in Arizona, for whomever is calculating shipping.
I hope this helps out my fellow fern guys. And Tim, if you want to do some as well for resale, hit me up.

Eric - thanks for getting the group buy going, but I'm not too keen on the dye thingy. I'm assuming the dye won't rub off or scratch off, etc? |

Hey Humanoid-
Its a vinyl based dye process - that stuff does not come off.
I'm going to do this next tuesday. If people seem interested, then the dye tech will mix some extra, bottle it and leave it. If not, then no big deal.
This sint a great deal, in my opinion. I like the part, so its worth the extra money for me to get it working right. If I had to pay shipping, I dunno. So you guys let me know what you think. She said she would do it for 45 or so just for me - but its less labor to mix up a batch for everyone. Really, Im not all that invested in it either way, just trying to help out my fellow fern'ies....

Eric,
My Fern part is on the way.....should have it tomorrow. Based on your and the other member's experiences....I assume it won't match.
So if you are pretty confident they can make that part look like stock Fern, and they will work with you a bit to get the price down....I'll throw my part in the mail to you once I get it.
Thanks for taking the initiative on this.

If you could PM me your name/address, I will throw this part in the mail to you first thing tomorrow....can likely get it to you by Tuesday so you can take it in with yours. I can then paypal you the amount + return shipping when you know it (or send you a check if you would rather).
Let me know if you think that would work, thanks.

| So Eric, we mail you the whole kit-n-kaboodle and it'll be taken care of, right? |

If I may make an attempt to summarize the situation. The conversation mirror only works on the 05s if you have the dual light setup. (03 and 04s won't work at all).
Grey matches, Saddle matches. Fern does not.
Is that correct?
BTW what color is the new fern, lighter, darker or what? The photos on my laptop LCD that Prijo posted look blueish on his fern and light gray on the new one. I always mentally thought of fern as light gray and gray as the dark gray.
Haven't seen any saddle posted, assume that the saddle is the light brown color on the sunglass holder. |

Humanoid-
Yeah, I can organize this a bit - its no trouble.
Sporty - from what I can tell on mine, the newer part is lighter than my 05 part, and hence my interior. Newer part is lighter, more olive green tint to it, original part has more grey.
What I am recommending people do -
Send me your 06 convo mirror part.
ALONG WITH some other piece of your interior that you want the color matched to.
I think its all going to be the same color, but just in case. I would rather be really careful here and get it right for people. I do suspect that if a different color or colors need to be shot, the discount might not be as great. I should be able to check that out prior to taking the parts to the dye tech. I will label everyones parts as thier own so nobodies stuff gets mixed up.
Now I can either put you in touch with the tech - mind that she hates computers and email, hehe - or I can handle it for you. I am obviously not charging anyone a penny over what she is charging, or putting bloated shipping on this. I would prefer to ship UPS ground though, I dont trust USPS personally. I have a UPS accoun so I can schedule pickups at my own house when this is done and get these right back out, very quickly.
I also dont currently have a paypal account. I somewhat dislike how paypal operates, to put it mildly. Checks are fine, since it will take a few days to get this all done anyhow.
The tech is available to me next tuesday. I will probably do mine then just to do it. If you send me a piece of your interior that the color needs to match to, she can be 100% sure she does it properly.
My cost for me to do mine singly was $45. She said the toughest and longest part of the job is making the matched dye - shooting the parts is a very quick process. She mentioned around 25$ apiece if I had a group involved. I think 2 more people should qualify, but do remember to estimate in a couple bucks for shipping.
... Thats it! If anyone can think of any other questions they have, I am more than happy to post them. I will post the dye techs phone number on here later - dont have it in front of me this second - so that anyone who wants to can call in and talk directly to her, I dont mind you checking up on what I am saying since I am pretty new here.
Have a great weekend all - anyone else with a fern convo mirror that doesnt quite match, just hit me up!

Man, those covers for the map lights are a real pain to get outta there. Mine did pop right out, but I was no comfortable with how they came out - felt like a few degrees off and I woulda broke em.
I have my old gery out, and 2 ferns will be shot today by the dye expert person. Mine, And Pilotesans here- he sent it to me.
I will post some before and after pics for you guys. The dye tech is mixing an extra large batch and putting it on the shelf, for anyone else who wants to jump in even after I am done. PM me for her contact details if you like.
Eric
Modifying to add-
The interior tech has all the parts now. They will be finished and back in my hands on thursday they said, dont know when. Will post before and after pics once I have em in hand!

Update on the dying process for fern owners-
I will post pics later - but they came out fantastic. Cost was 30$ per unit, the dye tech made up an extra bottle to save for anyone else interested here.
One thing they did discover is that the new sunglasses holder with the mirror, IE the moving part - fits in the older housing. They switched mine out as the original housing is more scratch proof, the dye is only on the holder/mirror part itself. That said - people with 03 pilots and the singlle piece map light cover may find this to be a solution. Dont switch out the whole part - just the holder. I dont have the pieces to check, but its worth a shot.
I will post pics later - Pilotesan, yours will be in the mail UPS ground to you on monday.
Next project, clear headlight covers! Oh yeah, and the X3 XM adapter install.

A very small and thin flathead screwdriver.
Thats the worst part. I actually screwed up one of em, bent the little snap-pins on the part - but when I put it back in there wasnt any play, so I guess it wasnt too bad.
Would be nice if someone who knew exactly how those were supposed to come out would post specific instructions here...

Now why didn't anyone else think of that!
Does a '03-'04 owner still have the conversation mirror that they ordered, so that they can give it a shot on the '03 unit? |

| After looking at the pics that wwong posted earlier in this thread, it doesn't look like swapping the holder into the '03-'04 part will work. The two sunglass holders are very different size/shape. I think there are clearance issues in roof structure of the '03-'04 too. |

You're right. The '03-'04 is shorter, and while the area that holds the sunglass holder looks removable on that model, the '06 one does not look like you can change it out. It was a nice thought. |

is it possible to switch out the holder without taking off the entire housing (albeit the 4 screws)...

Dont be lazy! Its only 4 screws!
Hehe, seriously... no.
The screws that hinge the sunglasses unit are on the side. Takes but 2 minutes tops to pop the whole unit out.

also, the mechanism that allows the mirror to come halfway down then all the way down is different than the old holder that just came all the way down.
two stage versus one stage positioning. |

Not exactly correct Prijo-
My sunglasses holder/mirror combo now sits in the 2005 chassis. The mechanism that provides the 2 step positioning is built into the holder itself, not the chassis. Mine swapped out fine.
I did this so that I had only 1 dyed piece, so dye wear is not so much of an issue.

| I figured that for $35, I could add a nice accessory to my 2006 LX - the Conversation Mirror. Unfortunately, that same bracket causing the problems in the older Pilots continues in the 2006 LX. The mirror assembly is too deep to fit into the space occupied by the OEM assembly. Back to the store it goes... |

Hang on one sec-
Just for my own edification - can you pop just the sunglasses holder out, and punch that in to the original housing? Instead of replacing the whole housing.
My dad has a 2003 lx and this would apply to him.

The conversation mirror will not fit in the smaller style housings. If you go back a couple of pages in this thread, you can see the two housings side by side. |
