| Looking for a small fun car. A four seater convertible perhaps. Anyone have experience with the Cooper? I know they are made by BMW but I hear they put Chrysler engines in the current version. |

I have a friend with one. Its fun to drive, but SMALL.
The maintenance is "BMW" pricing ($$$$).
Why would BMW use a "Daimler/Chrysler" engine? I would double check that rumor. |

"What Edmunds.com Says: The addition of more refined, flexible powerplants should give the Mini lineup the boost it needs to stay competitive.
What We Know: While BMW has made some minor changes to the styling of its popular midget car, the big news for the next-generation Mini will be the complete overhaul of its engine range. BMW has designed a new series of all-aluminum twin-cam engines with French company Peugeot, at least two of which will appear in the "Mini 2." While the capacity will remain the same for all available powertrains at 1.6 liters, the engines themselves are expected to be vast improvements over the hastily designed Tritec engines that Chrysler originally provided for the vehicles. The standard Cooper will receive a substantial bump in its horsepower from 115 to 150, while the Cooper S' new turbo engine will channel its 170 hp into a much more sophisticated package. BMW is considering retaining a 115-hp engine as an option for the standard Cooper. All three of these engines will feature Variable Valve Timing, while the turbos will be endowed with common-rail direct-injection fuel delivery. In addition to the above mentioned engines, other changes include a new and slightly longer body, new sheet metal, a revised grille and upgraded interior materials. " |

Interesting reading. Seems it was a 1997 Chrysler/BMW joint development program.
Hmmm, have not heard of anyproblems recently with Chrysler engines. Just hope they did not get any transmission technology also!! |

Agree. I'm not a Chrysler fan and knowing they are behind some of the development has me skiddish to this car. Also, the fact that Peugeot is behind the engine development for the '07 version isn't exactly confidence inspiring IMHO. |

Don't worry, when was the last time Peugeot made a car that lasted long enough to have engine trouble? :2: |

Good point LOL. But now it's MINI (or BMW) making this one. Peugeot should give them a Nissan engine and call it a day.:4: |

A co-worker of mine has a Mini. As previously mentioned, BIG BUCKS for service! $$$$$$$$$
AND.........there is always something wrong with the car. He still LOVES it, though!
I seem to recall Consumer reports gave the Mini the lowest of low in reliability ratings.
Go S2000!!!!!!!! :D |

And add to that it's made in England. |

So was the Merlin engine, without which the P-51 would have remained a POS. |

There was a time when Britannia ruled the waves but time and technology passed them by. Remember when Austin Healy, MG, and Triumph were the sports cars to own? ( I owned a Healy and a Triumph) Remember when Triumph and BSA were motorcycles to die for and Harleys were just so so?That's why Lucas, maker of electrical system in English cars was called the Prince of Darkness. They probably made refrigarators too and that's why the English drink warm beer.:2:
ahhh my Austin Healy 3000......brings back fond memories. Like when the Lucas fuel pump would quit and I'd reach down behind me and give the bulkhead a good wack to make it start pumping again! |

That Chrysler engine is not US made, but Brazilian made and is or is related to the Neon engine.
Nissan is team up with Renault not Peugeot
Peugeot is becoming a major engine player in europe. It teamed up with Ford for Diesel engines and now with BMW for gas engines. |

Interesting...... they say lots can be told about a man and his choice in vehicles. We drive two Hondas, as does the next door neighbor. House behind us, he had the entry level POS Jag last yr, now he drives the Mini, and she drives the older version Infiniti QX4. Can anyone top neighbors with a worse family of car selections than this? :p |

They could be driving GM and Chrysler (recent model Jags are reskinned Ford/Lincolns).
If someone has never had and driven a good car then they will never know any better. Give them a week driving a Honda / Acura and they will think they have died and gone to heaven. |
