Has anyone had a problem with their parking brake not fully releasing?
Coming home from this AM's football games with the boys I hear an occasional faint squeal coming from the rear of the Pilot. It comes and goes and I wouldn't even notice it if the radio was on. I get home and touch the wheels to see if they are hot and the rear driver's side was fairly warm. The other rear wheel was stone cold. After lunch I jacked up the rear of the Pilot and spun both wheels by hand, the warm wheel had some drag. I took the wheels off, both brakes look to have the same amount of pad remaining, and there doesn't seem to be any adjustment for the parking brake. I set and released the parking brake a few times and it seemed to get better. I put the wheels on and took it for a test ride, when I got home both wheels were cold.
I have 40K miles on my 2004, use the parking brake a few times a month and have seen no decrease in gas mileage or heard any noise before today. I did park on a steep hill this AM and used the parking brake.
Does the parking brake self adjust? I had a car with a parking brake problem a few years ago and the fix was to hit the brakes hard a couple of times in reverse, evidently that car self adjusted in reverse. Anyone know if that's the case with the Pilot? |

| I actually had problems with my parking brake during the first few weeks with my 2003 EX-L back in October 2002. The brake was not fully releasing and it was producing a loud, "rusty-gate-opening" squeal. The rear driver side tire actually began locking up on me. I had to bring it to the dealer to have it fixed, (under warranty, of-course). |

I have not run into this problem (yet). So I can't help you with why it appears to be sticking. But I will tell you how to adjust it.
Remove the rear wheels. There is a rubber plug about the size of a nickel between two of the wheel studs. Remove it, but be careful not to push it into the hole like I once did. Rotate the hole to just forward of 6 o'clock, look inside w/a flashlight and you'll find the star adjuster. Turn the adjuster w/a screwdriver, rotating the top of the star away from you until it binds. Then go back the other way a few notches until the rotor is free. Same for the other side. There is no parking assy. in the calipers. It's a shoe/drum type.
The cables do not usually need adjusting. |

Thanks Rob, I'll give that a shot this afternoon.
What maint manual do you have? Are you happy with it? Other than routine fluid and filter maint this is the first issue I've had in 40K miles. No warrantee issues either.
