Acetone !!! - Click HERE for Original Thread
CHADC880
So I hope this thread does not get out of hand. So here we go.

Has anyone heard about adding acetone to your fuel tank to get improved gas mileage and power ???

Yeah I laughed my head off at my friend one day when he told me this but then I remember him always getting 40mpg on a 1999 Accord 5sp that is only rated for 33MPG.

So I come home and go to Yahoo and look it up. 50% good 40% not sure 10% say no it doesn't work.

Now I love my Pilot and yes it stays park in my garage after filling it up 2 months ago at $3.60 a gallon. I went out and bought a 1998 Accord EX with 210,000 miles from the original owner for $3700.00 what a steal.

Ok anyways I am not going to try the pilot but I am trying it out on my accord. So far I have noticed it burn cleaner emissions and alittle more power but I have noticed 4 MPG difference and trust me I watch it very closely due to that was the only reason why I bought the accord. I tried to get my wife to sell her 03 Accord and take the Pilot and I drive my 98 but she said no the Pilot was toooo big. So for now it will sit in showroom condition in our garage. I do drive it every 4th weekend to church and dinner!!! :2:

It will clean you injectors, and after that it won't do much.

The problem is tank to tank mileage and season to season mileage varies too much to get any reliable results from "amateur" testing.

Am I to understand that you bought a used Accord because it gets better mileage and you're not driving the Pilot because of the price of gas? Two points:

  • Gas has come down in price quite a bit since you last filled up the Pilot.
  • How many times can you fill the Pilot for $3,700.00?

It just doesn't make sense to buy and sell vehicles based solely on this week's price of gas.

How could you possibly know that?
CHADC880
Yes you are correct.

I bought a 1998 Accord LX and turn it into a EX basiclly except it doesnt have a sunroof.

What can I say I love honda's.

Can save enough fuel to make it justified for $3700.00 ???

Well let me put it this way,

I could sell this accord anyday for about $5,000 around here.

For $3700.00 you wouldn't have bought this Accord !!!!

Now do not get me wrong I do enjoy my Pilot very much and My wife and I are trying to have a family as we speak but people around here love to door ding up new cars and so fourth. I figured drive the accord around town and on some trips and let the pilot be driven every now and then and its like having a new car every other week. :2:

One day I will sell the accord and take my profit. I did add the spoiler, tinted windows and installed the OEM honda keyless entry system.

Ok, well, as long as you're having fun. Anyways, about the acetone - if there was any credibility to it, it would be added it to the gas already, like so many other additives. Acetone is really just a solvent. Check out what acetone does to Styrofoam.

No I would not buy with 210,000 miles. Too many things to go wrong at that mileage that will cost you in a big way. Your purchase to save gas is plain foolish. Paying for the Pilot to sit is even more foolish. Your still paying and getting nothing in return. Gee, now your having to pay insurance on three cars. That added expense alone would have payed for the extra gas costs. Kind of like getting married and then the old lady decides to not have sex anymore. This is why it is not good to ask most people advice on money issues. Most just advise with no real justification other than they just think it makes sense. The road to success or failure is lined with fools.

Ohhhh boy here we go again. another I think I have everything in the world figured out type person.

You really think I am that dumb don't you ??

Well I myself actually believe in Honda's and would never buy any other vehicle made by another brand with high mileage. If you truely believed in Honda's and repaired or serviced them on a regular bassis then 200,000mile plus Honda is nothing. I mean geesh there was a 93 Accord EX at Honda of Hickory in NC that had 512,000 miles and still had the original paint drove and ran PERFECT!!!!!!

So anyway to just sum it up,

I bought my accord from the original owner and have every single service record on it and very recent major maintance stuff replaced. I would never buy a high mileage anything without service records.

Now to sum things up more I use to own a CBR1000F which I paid insurance on and drove everyday sometimes even in the rain. I broke my shoulder in a jetski accident and cannot ride motorcycles anymore so instead bought this accord. Before I bought my first pilot i owed a 99 Accord LX same color and so fourth.

Insulting someone as you have about making financial decissions for themselves you can really go shove that around back.

What part of selling a $4,000 car for $5,000 when I need to makes no sense. I mean at least a possible $1,000 profit is a bad idea. Oh wait you probally are a X Enron Employee.

You know as far as not driving my pilot I really enjoy driving my pilot when I do. I hate it like piss when someone door dings my pilot or even hate it more how honda puts such thin paint on the bumpers and one big bug can take a chunk of paint off. Further more you have no idea what all or how much I drive during the week around town and driving the pilot everyday 400 miles a week seems like throwing $30,000 down the drain. Why not put all the crappy miles on the accord and Keep this nice new pilot in the garage until the weekend and enjoy it. And as far as the gas prices yes they have come down and I look forward to the $20.00 a tank fill up if it ever comes about.

You shouldn't judge someone without knowing all of the facts. One day when your Pilot has 60,000 miles on it and you have to take a hit from the trade in value I will pull up beside you with probally less than 10,000miles on mine still in showroom condition and not have to trade but yet my accord will probally have 300,000miles on it and still running strong. :D
pilotbob
Your reasoning is rediculous. Hondas break just like any other car. I know because I have had them, and others I know have had them and they have all had issues that cost plenty to fix. After a hundred thousand miles the playing field starts to level out quickly. You will not have to worry about the mileage after the acetone eats all the fuel lines.

DZANHG!

So, Acetone....

Theres your Acetone!!!!

I just love people who think they are president of the united states and know it all.

Good thing your not too sensitive or judgmental.:twak:

Personally, I don't care what anyone does with their money or what they put in their gas tank. But I'd still like to know how you determined the emissions were "cleaner" (unless you put it on a dynamometer).
CHADC880
CO2 tester. Maybe its not an exact messurement but it gave me a idea. Plus I mean you can tell just from the smell of the exhuast.

For whatever it is worth I did have a check engine light from the cat converter not getting up proper running temp and has since gone off and not come on since and have driven probally about 500 miles with no more light. I am not sure if it is from the Acetone or not. I think its from pure luck.

The whole point on this thread is I want other peoples opinoin or someone who is also a mechanic and see what they think. About the comment about it eating your fuel line!!!! Thats funny if you only really knew whats already in gasoline!!!! And you think a few ounces of acetone mixed in a 17 gallon tank is going to take out my fuel lines. In no way am I promoting it or dissing it. Would I put it in my Pilot ?? Nope not yet. I would like to do more research on it.

So much for that.

I would also have my doubts about adding the acetone and expecting any gains.

Nice looking Accord though! Good luck with it.

"There's your acetone"... :19:

I have not tried the acetone in my Pilot and wont, but, I have used acetone in my 1988 carburated Land Rover and my 1994 Land Rover Discovery. I did get more mpg. I got between 2-3 mpg more with acetone in both vehicles and 2-3 mpg less when I dont use it. Maybe a fluke but I will continue to use it in my Land Rovers. Both cars are older and I dont mind experimenting with them:D
