new speaker install and problems - Click HERE for Original Thread

After reading about how good the infinity references were and how easy they are to install I decided to buy a pair. I got a new pair of 6012i off of ebay for $21+14 shipping. I decided on DIY since you guys here made it look so easy.

Install time 1st door: 3 hours!
Install time 2nd door: 30mins.

I thought that the hardest part would be figuring out how to remove the door panel but that was easy. Most of the people here had installed the 6002i without having to do any modifications but the 6012i are a different case.

The base is wider and did not fit inside the stock mounting bracket. I was trimming bits and pieces off thinking that the capacitor was getting in the way, then realized it was the base. So I cut off the back of the bracket and used the tope as a spacer for the new speakers. Worked perfect. I wonder if the shallow mount would have fit better.

Instead of getting a adapter to wire the speakers, I just cut the one off of the stock speaker and attached it to the new.

2 problems after speakers have been installed.

1. Since all I have is a spacer mounted with the speaker, should I worry about the exposed wires inside the door. Will rain or moisture affect it since the cut off the mounting bracket that covered the back of the speakers.

2. Now my auto-up window does not work. I can still feal the "click" when I push or pull it, but it doesnt lock it to bring it up without holding it. Any suggestions?

Not too bad for my first DIY speaker install. Thanks for all the help on this site.

Hey sbexlrespilot05 welcome to the DIY club, thanks for the notes. I have the 6002's and they were a snap. I did take some good quality duct tape and make a "hood" over the top of the speakers that were exposed. This would just keep any water that happened to drip down the door inside off the cone, voice coil and wiring. I dont think you want that exposed, but just a personal opinion.

On your window issue, I might double check that you have the wiring in the door plugged back in correctly, this happened to me and it was the connection to the driver side module that proved to be my issue, I just re-seated it and all was well, also you may have to reprogram the memory which is easy enough, with the ACC on, just hold the switch down and bring the window all the way down, hold the switch for 2 seconds, then bring the window all the way up and while holding the switch for 2 more seconds it should reset this, if the wiring harness are connected back right. As I remember there are 3 connections on the drivers side to the window module.

Thanks. It looks like I just needed to reprogram the memory. It worked like a charm. Now I just need to find a way to cover the back of the speaker. I'll try your hood idea.

So how is the sound guilty?

The sound quality is good and a nice upgrade. They will probably be a lot better when I get the rear replaced. I dont think they are worth $100 per pair at the stores though. I got them cheap off of Ebay is it was well worth the $21+14 I paid for it.

Definitely cover the back of the speaker basket with some sort of cover. I actually drove around with the interior door panel off in the rain and noticed that water does drip on the speaker basket.

You can get them off from Crutchfield.com. They have a sale right now on 6012si for $79.99 ($20 off). You can also get the waterproof speaker baffles to protect your speakers from moisture - XTC 6-1/2-inch pair for $15.98. They even give you instructions on how to install and some free harnesses and brackets.

Check it out.

If you get these, just make sure to cut the cup part in half so you only have a top hood. Otherwise, you loose your midbass because there is not enough air getting to the mid.

Good information to know. I was going to buy the cups, but since I would have to cut them anyways, no point of spending the money and waiting for them to ship. Also when I went to Best Buy and Circuit City the other day and talked to the people who install speakers, they dont use them or any cover when installing speakers in cars. They just stick the new ones in. I think I will try CMastens Duct tape "Hood" just incase.

I had a set of Infinity speakers installed without a hood for a little while. When I pulled them to install the hood, there was already rust on the magnets.

Keep on mind that if you want to know what not to do, ask CC how they do something. CC and any of those stores install based on what is cheapest and quickest (also known as crappiest). They never sound deaden the doors, run new speaker wire or use MDF unless a spacer is needed. You can't blame them because all that stuff is labor intensive and most customers will balk at spending extra money on things that are not very tangible.
