My 10.2" Clarion OHMD102 DVD Player + soundgate SNHOND3 - Click HERE for Original Thread

Here are pictures of my newly installed over-head DVD player. I got it for $1100cdn and $140cdn to install and $140cdn for soundgate SNHOND3.

The installation was including the soundgate SNHOND3 for Aux sound, but we later found out Navi is using the wire to the Aux button in the back of headunit. Therefore, in order to get it working without cutting the factory wire, another member found me the P.I.E. Y harness that is required to complete the job. Therefore, I will have to wait for that before I can show u the picture for installing the soundgate SNHOND3. Without this Y connector, the Navi will not take any input (touch screen/buttons). So I temporary use my FM transmitter for the sound until I get my Y connector. I helped out my technician to install the DVD so I have very good idea on how those works now. I will personally install the soundgate later when I get the Y connector.

P.I.E. Y Harness to combine Navi in Aux.

For those of you curious about if the soundgate works, yes it does. It works great without the balance problem that I saw on another thread. The sound comes out from it is just beautiful. I switch between CD changer/AM/FM/Aux and they all work fine.

But please be noted, this is a '06 Canadian EX-L with Navi model which DOESN'T have XM radio since Canadian just got XM radio approved and just started to be selling legally on Dec 2005. I don't know if SNHOND3 will work with XM radio or not.

here is the full view. Let me know if u have questions.

Very nice. I have three questions.

1. Does it obstruct the rear view when pulled down?

2. What do you put in the ceiling in order for the DVD player to mount on?

3. Do you need to run a seperate power wire or use the existing dome light wire for the player?

Thanks.

Wow, very nice install. Looks great. Wish I had that when the kids were little.
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Thanks. Here is the answer for your question.

1. Yes, it bolcks about 50~60% of the center view of the rear view mirror and I have a very big after market rear view mirror. But that doesn't bother me at all. I stll have side rear view mirror + some views of the center rear view mirror.

2. It comes with a mounting metal bracket. My technician put a piece of 1/2 thick with about 30"x30" wood (not plywood, but some pressed wood) on the other side of the ceiling to make the bracket screw in. To his suprise, the ceiling right after the moonroof has a empty spot looks like purposely designed for putting a piece of wood in there without insulation. It was actually prefect for a DVD player there. But in order to get the ceiling to stay stable, he has to put one extra metal screw to secure the whole bracket + wood to a cross bar under the moonroof. But it doesn't affact the opening of the moonroof at all.

(Correction- 2 metal screw was needed to hold up te headliner to the roof support bar)

3. I think there is an extra power wire run back alone with the audio wire thru B-pillar, door sill, under steering wheel and then back to somewhere. I miss that part when I ran out the get a audio spilter. But he did also use the power in the dome light so the dome light on the DVD player behaves like the dome light (close the door for few sec and it will turn off).

Thanks a lot for your detailed installation steps. I always wanted a DVD in there, but it is just a bit too much (over $2k CDN for OEM). I had bad experience over after market installation, they always broke something here and there and just covered it up. Oh well, yours look very nice though.

That is the key, you have to find a shop that someone has used, and one that works on high end vehicles. When I had mine done there was a Porsche Cayenne, and the thing was apart, I couldn't believe all the wires all over. So that gave me confidence to have it done there. If they work on Porsches, they can work on my Pilot!
Go to many shops and see what the work area looks like, that will give you a big clue as to how they will do your install.

hehehe.... I found a guy works in a very big audio/video store for 15 years and got him to work on this as his side job so I can learn how to as well. ;) It was installed in my garage.

Also, make sure u don't go cheap with the unit. OEM is like $2000cdn or more, so a $1100 like mine is not bad at all. Futureshop/bestbuy has something like $399~599. Don't buy those. U will regret that u did (at least that's what my technician told me)

You are absolutely right about this. All I saw in Futureshop/Bestbuy are regular cars at best, and have not seen anything like what you saw. And I had not so pleasant experience with them although they paid for the damage. I think I have to look around for specialty shops to do a nice job.

look for car audio/video stores in Toronto. I am sure there are lots of them.

I used to think only Futureshop/Bestbuy have them. But later realize there are a lot more professional stores around town. ;)

check with ppl in this car forum....

I noticed that your screen resolution's pretty high although hard to tell from the pictures. The Futureshop ones are not as good although they are higher than $599. Looking at your Navi may me regret not getting one, I was almost lost a week ago. And every time I went out with the kids, I thought about the DVD option. No more DVD and Navi pictures please! :2: :4:

hehehe.... I used to strap a DVD player on the headrest for my kids on my CRV and TSX. But I found out it's just not worth the time to carry and setup the DVD every time u get in the car. That's why I decided a DVD player in there is a must. It starts where it left off every time I start the car.

For Navigation is the same. A lot of time I have to take out my PDA and setup the navigation when I go somewhere not familar. The time to setup all that is just troublesome. Not to mention Honda's Navi can also control a lot of things in the car. Simply just say "Go home" and everything is there. After seeing my car, my brother and my dad decided their next car Navi is a must. ;)

But I do plan to keep my pilot for over 10 years. That's why I'd rather have it now than regret it later. :)

U may not be able to get Navi now, but DVD player is still possible. Believe me, don't buy any DVD player for anything less than $1000cdn. :p

Strapping a laptop in between front seats was my thought, but have not tried yet. Seems like a 14" laptop might fit tight and does not require strapping. I'am the only one in the Pilot most of the time, so this method may not require too much work, but again it is very primative.
How did your bodyshop work turn out? If you look carefully at all edges and gaps, and don't find flaw, then it is a perfect job. Yoy should not notice any colour difference at all. Not meant to remind you the bad memories.
ecsw
that's the thing, I have 10" LCD laptop, 9" LCD portable DVD player. But when it comes to the kids, any extra time to spend before u can start the car is all too much. :p

It sounds like too much too spend ($1100 + installation, almost the priuce of a laptop), but believe me, a laptop can not do the job. A portable DVD might be a bit better, but again, it's much easier to do it with overhead DVD player. :4:

 I can't do anything with my body work yet. I am leaving town to LA with my Pilot next week for vacation. I can only do it when I come back in January I guess. :(

Have a nice trip! Sunshine State is 23 hours away from TO.

thanks. I will sure put up a thread with pictures of where I visit. ;)

Please BE CAREFUL!

I have discussion with another member ED27 in another thread regarding overhead RES installation. He think the way I did on my overhead RES is not very safe and not necessary the right way of doing this.

If any of you decide to do it the same way as I did, please make sure that you understand that you are taking your own risk.

I don't think it's that bad. But again, if anything shall happen, I will not be responsible if u are trying to install RES the same way as I did.

I had a question about your install.

I was looking in the '06 service manual last night and reading the trim removal sections. It seems that when you remove the pillar trim on the 06 that you must replace the clips holding the trim in with new ones.

Did you need to do this on your install?

Thanks,

no, I didn't. It went back nicely. But when the body shop remove the D pillar in the back to repair for something else, the d pillar cover seem to be a bit lose. I might need some new clips for that. But it's not related to the DVD installation at all.
