| I am getting close to 7.5k and called the dealer to schedule my first service visit. Perhaps I didn't hear this correctly but I believe she said it would be $90. From what I can see in the owner's manual all that is required is an oil change and tire rotation. This sounds excessive or am I missing something here? |

No, you're not missing anything...$90 for an oil change, rotation, and some mouse milk??? That sounds more than reasonable...
Are you kidding me??? Most people do rotations for free and oil changes are $23 at the most. I would go somewhere else-
Anyway, how does your factory oil look after 7500 miles??? |

| To answer the question re the factory oil....it looks a bit dark at this point and I am sitting at approx 6500 mi. I am taking it in Friday to have some initial problems taken care of (fabric on ceiling, etc.) that I never made time to deal with and intend to ask them what is planned for the 7.5k visit. |

Do they put golden nuggets in their oil?
Holy cow, I'd call around other dealers, or DIY. You don't even need to jack this car up... Many dealers will even wash the car for you.
Are they going to void the warranty if we DIY the oil change?
questions, questions, questions.... |

| I found out what they want to do for $90.....oil change, tire rotation and brake "adjustment". The owner's manual says nothing about the latter. It does call for a brake "inspection" on the 15K visit. I know they charge < $20 for an oil change, so it looks like I will need to spoonfeed this dealer to get only what I want/need. |

It is Cad$29+15% tax, Type 1 oil change, with tire pressure checked.
All the noise complicants, scratches, and mis-alignment interior trim pieces (selectively which trim they wanted to fix, of course the rear A/C vents, all back ordered from Japan) nothing could be done.
Just drove it home. Leave it or take it. No design error on Honda's part ! |

Here in Atlanta there are some independent Honda/ Acura shops that do scheduled maintenance not to mention Valvoline Instant Oil Change ( http://www.vioc.com/ ) - they even give you a card to log on the internet to keep your maintenance records. I'm not a huge fan of Jiffy Lube but when I lived in DC I used Goodyear Tire and Auto because the did free rotations on Goodyear Tires.
Dealers are typically the most expensive for this type of maintenance.
I'd say grab the yellow pages |

I do my own oil change, and this one is going to be a breeze, I wouldn't even have to jack the car up, I can drive a truck through the room under there.
I buy the tires from Costco, they have one of the best return and warranty policy and the balance and rotation is always free. And the price is one of the lowest. The don't do alignment, thought. |
|
|
| Pang |
| I called the dealer in Poughkeepsie, NY, and they want $125 for the 1st service. Sounds like they are the most expensive yet. I'll be scratching them off my list. |
|
|
| N_Jay |
Ask them exacly what it covers and what each costs.
You will not know if you are being ripped off till you know what you are getting.
OK, at $125, you might assume you are getting ripped off. Fair enough.
But for the $25 to $90 dealers; ask! |
|
|
| Pang |
| I assume it will cover whatever the factory suggests: oil and filter change, tire rotation, check the fluids, brakes etc.... |

What services are performed during the first service that maintain the warranty? If its just changing the oil and rotating the tires, can I just do that myself(keeping receipts)?

Don't assume, ask.
Each dealer may have there own personal version of the service table.
I know the dealer I use goes by one table for both the 5000/10000 cars, and the 3750/7500 cars.
You need to do what is in the owners manual. You do not need to have the dealer do the work. |

Here in suburban Washington, D.C. the dealer is quoting $152.00 for the first service. They do offer "free oil change" and a 10% coupon discount if you purchased the Pilot from them, bringing the actual charge closer to $120.00
This seems high to me, given that all he's doing is rotating the tires, changing the oil, changing the rear differential oil and doing a general saftey inspection.
Any suggestions or other comparisons? We are at 5850 and will hit 7500 soon enough. :1zhelp: |

I just called Ourisman Honda where I got mine. They recommeded the oil change at 3750 and then a 7500 mile service for "about $93" what ever that means. I'm planning on going to 5000 for the oil change (let's not start that again) |

I have followed some of the discussion around here--Sport Honda in Silver Spring is emphatic about the 7,500 mile first oil change. I thought the service rep did mention VTM service at the 7,500 mile.
We have taken several long trips this past fall and summer, so at least half of the miles have been on steady drives, the rest in stop in go DC traffic.
I'm going to call Ourisman in Bethesda. At $93.00 that may still be less than Sport. |
|
|
| artjohn |
| I called Sport Honda and told them that their normally more expensive competition in Bethesda, Ourisman, is less expensive for the initial service. I think both these dealerships are overcharging on the 7500 mile service. Seems to me it shouldn't take more than an hour of shop time to complete the service. Perhaps given that the Pilot is new, the dealers are still working this out. I confirmed that Ourisman would do it for "about 92$" with discounts for first timers and folks who purchased from them. |

I know this sounds ridiculous, but... one dealer in my area suggested we change the oil at the first 1,000 miles, AGAIN at 2,000 miles, and then regularly at 3000 - 5000 miles. They're just trying to soak some people for $$.
Personally, I think I'll do the first change around 7,500 or so, providing the oil doesn't look bad before that. |

My first service cost $14. (The price of oil + filter). This was at 3750. At 7k I'll do the same and possibly change the VTM fluid, so whatever the fluid cost is there.

FWIW, at 6250, our oil looks remarkably clear with no odor. It's not high on the stick, but it isn't too low either. Given our dealer's repeated assurance to wait to 7500 before the first change, that's what we are going to do. |

No, this was DIY. I just listed this as a comparison point for "just an oil change" & tire rotation visit. As N_Jay has said time and again though, you need to find out exactly what they are doing in order to truly determine if you are getting your moneys worth out of their service quote. Simply stating 7,500 mile service with a price doesn't do you much good. I'm sure services performed vary greatly from the maintenance listing in the manual.

Ok.
The dealer is perfectly willing to give a detailed account specifying exactly what he purports to do for $150.00. He lists all the fluids he checks, the systems he checks, like brakes, road test, change oil, rotate tires, check tire pressure etc. Clearly, none of this adds up to near $150.00, and at the end of the day, your are simply being ripped off for what essentially remains a tire rotation, oil change and safety check that should cost well under $50.
Iam not very happy with this situation. If you don't take it to a dealer during the warranty, (and suffer the rip off,) don't you risk Honda claiming that the vehicle wasn't properly serviced and thereby hand them a basis for denying future warranty claims? Aren't you on stronger footing with Honda in any such future dispute if you can claim that the vehicle was always serviced at an authorized dealer? |
|
|
| Mkell |
| You might check the exact wording in the manual. I will later today. Is there any language that says that the maintenance should be performed by an authorized Honda Dealership. Probably not. It seems like if you have proof of taking care of all that is in the manual and you know it's a place that does it all the time, what could be there claim? I will probably use the Exxon station on Macarthur Blvd for simple stuff. It's probably cheaper to get them to do the whole checkup even if you don't get the "free" oil change. It is starting to seem funny -- the oil change is "free" but the other stuff like inspecting (glancing at) belts will cost $100. Give me a break! |

Yep, my sentiments exactly. No question but the dealer is gouging. I will also check the manual, then order a case of Filters from Tim (or get Sport Honda to sell them at a comparable price) purchase a case of Mobil 1 Synthetic at Costco then educate Moshe, my friendly independent Volvo mechanic, on the Honda Pilot. He is located around the corner from Radial Tire in Silver Spring and is a terrific and honest mechanic. |

It's good that you have a mechanic you trust. If you can't/don't have the time/don't want to do your own service, then building a relationship with a local mechanic is the best thing you can do. In the end, having the job done right is what it's all about.

This morning, I talked to the service manager of the dealership where I purchased my Pilot regarding a little "First Blood" incident with my car ( a story for another time--it will have you husbands rolling your eyes and thinking to yourselves, "I am glad that I am not married to her, I would have to kill her!!") however, while I had him on the phone, I asked him when I should have my first service visit and how much it would cost?
I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the cost was going to be $24.95!!! I asked if it was just for the oil change and he said that was one of the things that they did, they also checked other fluid levels, inspections, etc. Would take about 45 minutes. He also said that 3750 miles was the approximate point that it should get done, especially where I do alot of "in-town" driving. Oh, and the repair for my little "first blood incident", a mere $333 at the local auto body shop. :( |

Every time I go to a dealer for an oil change they want $75-100. I just say "NO". Oil change an filter ONLY, Please! About $25.
I just go to the Quick Oil changes anyway for $23 and say no to them as well (they want to do a complete Engine oil flush on a car with 7500 miles on it, thus insulting my intelligence).
Ever read what they do for these extravagent 7500 services???
Change oil, filter. (worth $25 at most)
Rotate tires. (most tire shops do for free)
Air filter....maybe every year for around $15.
Inspect hoses
Inspect belts
Inspect brakes
Inspect...
Inspect...
Inspect...
Inspect...Get the picture... Inspect....look....eyeball...perhaps squeeze a hose! For $75 more than an oil change!
Think they ever "inspect" and find anything on cars with 7500, 15000, or 23500 miles? Doubtful. Just ripping you out of $75.
Doubtful even more is that they even "inspect anything" knowing the quality of people they got doing the "premium service". Even if it fails 2 days later...you think they are liable...no....but you DO have a warranty for at least 36,000 regardless of how much "inspection you do".
At 30K....I say OK....Inspect...esp brakes. But then again... Goodyear (as an example) will rotate your tires and inspect your brake for free if you get an oil change there. (19.95)
Meanwhile....change the oil for $25 (or less) and save your money.
As I mentioned in a previous post, a Honda Service writer I know says they all "laugh" at the "ripoff" of the 7500 mile interval service charges.
Excuse my venting.... |

For all of you getting ready to do your first service work on your PILOT - read your owner's manual.
Honda says not to do the first oil change until you hit the 7,500 mile mark under normal conditions
If your service guy is trying to soak you for that "first service" at a point before you hit that 7,500 mark - you're about to get "greased" alright! |

Those of you that bring your cars to garages/dealers to get oil changes, it's important to keep in mind that they do a half-cocked job at best. Examples...
1. Do they allow the oil to fully drain from the pan??? This includes removing the oil filler cap and pulling the dipstick to allow max airflow in the crankcase. The answer is no. I have seen dealers replace the drain plug practically mid-stream.
2. After replacing they oil drain plug, do they wipe the pan down to remove any oil that migrated while draining? No-
3. When removing the oil filter, do they try not to spill oil all over the exhaust and engine block? And if they do spill, do they bother to wipe it off? No-
4. Do they clean the oil filter seat before installing the new filter? No-
In other words, they try to do the job as fast as possible. You can go to the same dealer for ten oil changes and you will never get the same oil level any two times. Every tech their own theory on how much oil your car takes. 85% of the time they tend to overfill. I stopped having my oil changed many years ago and have had no oil related problems since. This goes for tranny and VTM fluid changes as well…
Good luck to you all!!! |

MG,
While my experience with other people changing oil in my vehicles has been similar to your description (this is why I've done it myself for the past 12 years), I'm sure that some people have found solid, trustworthy mechanics who do the job right. As discussed before, if you aren't going to do it yourself, finding a competent mechanic is the next best thing. But again, I know where you're coming from and have seen some pretty bad stuff.

It all depends on where you take it. There are many quick in and out type places.
When viewing the mechanics working at Sussex Honda. Their professionally trained and I never see them running around or rushing. The whole dealer experience with them has been the opposite. With a price of $21.95...which could have easily been $49.95 or $79.95...they continue to build on the trust they've earned.
Joe
PS Actually I have to recheck with them, if they'll use a Syntetic Oil or Blend for me. I may not take it there if they don't. |

I hate to be the devil's advocate on this
one, especially since I would never pay
someone to "inspect" my belts/hoses, but here
is the thing: If you DO ask someone to inspect
something on your car, at the very list he has
to open the hood and look, take the wheels off
and look e.t.c. That take a little bit of time,
say 20 minutes. The problem is that many
dealerships charge in 1hr increments for their
labor. So you end up paying $60-$75 for your 20
minut inspection + the cost of the oil change.
I recently paid $75 for Maintainance Light On
diagnostics on my Nissan (and I TOLD them what
the code was, they just confirmed it) which takes
about 10 minutes. I know how you feel.
Either DIY or befriend a good mechanic.

My pilot's vehicle service light was on everytime I start the engine after the 6000 mile. So, I called my dealer today to check the first service item and price. Here is what I got.
The service includes following:
-Replace engine oil, filter and drain plug washer
-Inspect front brake pads, calipers, discs and hoses
-Inspect exhaust and steering systems and suspension mounts
-Inspect wiper blades
-Inspect and rotate tires
-Check fluid levels
-Road test
The total cost is about $54. Since I bought the car there, the oil change is free for the first survice, which cut the price to $32. It is not the best deal within this thread, but it is not a bad one either.
Funny thing is that after I called them, I found a letter from them in my mailbox. Basicly tells me everything I asked, plus a 10% off coupon for the first survice.
Not bad at all! :) |

That seems about right. Our dealership gives the first oil change free, we do recommend that to be done at the 3700 to 4000 mile mark, Then you can take it to a higher point if you would like. |

I just returned from my Honda dealer for my 7500 mile service. They changed oil & filter, rotated tires and did all the inspections mentioned in the manual. They advised me not to have the VTM4 fluids changed until 15,000 miles unless I did off roading or pulled a boat or trailer.
Cost was $59.00
It took them a while to figure out what needed to be done as this was the first Pilot they had in with 7500 miles. |

We just had our first service at 7300 miles
Replaced engine oil and filter
Rotated tires, adjusted pressure
Inspected steering, suspension and exhuast components
Cleaned battery terminals
Topped off fluid levels
Road tested
Reset Maintenance light
Lubricated locks, hings and window run channels
The oil change was "free"; (they applied $30.67 as a "good will gesture" b/c we bought the car from them) the rest came to .5 hours of shop time (at $75.00 per hour), $2.16 for solvent, $5.63 for miscellaenous shop materials, plus tax, for a grand total of $45.68.

| I called 4 dealerships in the Long Isand NY area...The price for the 7500 service was in the range of 75.00-89.00....I just can't see spending that kind of money for basically an oil change and tire rotation...I finally went to a local Honda dealership and just purchased a Honda Oil filter for 6.00...I took the filter to a local mechanic and had him do the oil change and tire rotation and provided the filter...Total charges= 19.95 plus tax.....I reset the maintenace light myself and appear good to go for another 7500 miles!!!---waxpilot |

| I'm scheduled to visit my Boston area Honda dealer next week for the first visit and was told that the price would be $39.95: includes the oil change ($21.95) and tire rotation ($18.00). |

I called the dealership to schedule the first service. I was quite shocked at the price. $175.00:awais: :1pat: :1zhelp:
Told the dealer to kiss my :bootyshak
Asked how could they possibly charge that much for an oil change and tire rotation??? Well, they gave me a whole list of stuff they check, ie fluids, brakes, belts, etc...
I informed them the required 7500 mile service is just an oil change and tire rotation and I don't need the tire rotation because I just had the Cross Terrains mounted.
Price of 7500 mile service was reduced to $28.00. Done.... |

| Made an appt yesterday for a 7500 mile service. I get an email back confirming the appt and a price of $213! I emailed back requesting an explanation. The service manager responded back that they use the 'severe conditions' criteria in setting the price. I emailed him back, thanked him for the explanation and told him I'm more of a normal conditions kinda guy and I'll be in for my oil change/tire rotation. Fellow Piloteers, always know what is required for each service and don't pay for more. |

I only have 1200 miles on my Pilot so I haven't checked into the first service yet, but I really appreciate all the postings out here as it will make me much more informed when I begin my inquiry.
We have always done on our service (oil changes etc), but had a bad experience recently with our Toyota. Apparently, they have had an oil sludging problem during the last few years on many of their engines. They are fixing the problem provided you can provide proof of engine maintenance and keeping a recording of the changes along with record of oil filter purchases (Toyota filters, but bought in bulk) might not be enough. We were told they wanted copies of the oil purchases (which we also bought in bulk when on sale, but didn't have all receipts). We didn't wait around to see how it turned out - we got rid of the Toyota.
But I'm sure everyone already realizes the importance of receipts and records if you do it yourself. Although we thought we were doing well, we were quite as disciplined as Toyota might have wanted us to be. And we were never comfortable that they would have accepted receipts where we had purchases 12 filters and 3 cases of oil at one time. We decided if we were going to DIY with this car, we'd have to take pictures with date imprints along with the daily headlines from the paper in the background to prove when we actually changed the oil.
Hopefully Honda doesn't have an oil sludging issue, and we allow some dealership (that doesn't overdo or overcharge) keep our records for us.
Great site - thanks for all the tips |
