Cricket-like wizzing from 2006 Honda Pilot - Click HERE for Original Thread

My wife and I purchased a 2006 Honda Pilot EX-L in November 2005. Shortly after, it began making a noise when accelerating similar to a fluttering or whizzing sound crickets make. We've taken it to the dealer three times and they say "some vehicles just make certain noises". Initially, they thought it might be spark ping. However, the sound seems to be getting louder and more annoying. Other than this noise, I love my Pilot. Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions. This noise is definitely not normal and it is very annoying driving a new vehicle that makes this type of noise. Please, I'm begging for some thoughts or suggestions.

Wow, bummer of a noise to have. No, my '06 EX-L 2-WD doesn't make any noise like that.... that I'm aware of ;) .

Good luck with the noise!

sounds to me like you have a ground loop in your electrical system maybe the cabling for the radio? does it whine in direct relation to your accelerator? if so I would have the dealer check out the cable/ground that connects to the head unit.

If its a lose ground that may indeed get worse as it loosens up. This could be internal or external to the head unit (or other)

btw, other than the smooth sound of the VTEC... it should be a pretty quiet vehicle. Mine is just as quiet after its first year and 15,000 miles as it was the day I bought it. I would find another dealer for service.

I have the same problem with my '03 Pilot. I bought the car a little over a month ago and noticed it right away. I turned the radio off after I noticed it and it still does it. When you accelerate it makes the noise and when you let off it goes away. IT ALSO SOUNDS JUST LIKE A CRICKET!!!! I have no idea what it might be!!!!:3: :3: :3:

Does anyone know what this might be?

So you say it sounds like a "cricket". Is this like a noise coming from the accessory belt? Does it change with the A/C off or on? Does it happen when you rev the engine with the Pilot in Park or Neutral, or only in gear? Does it change when it shifts from first to second? When I hear "crickets" in a noise like this, I think of chirping of the fan/accessory belt, and sometimes this can be true due to a mis-aligned pulley or an idler pulley that has a bad bearing.

I only notice this during acceleration. It is a constant buzz. I don't think that it is a belt. I don't hear it at a stand still.

Since I bought the Pilot a month ago I wasn't sure if this was normal. The Pilot doesn't have any acceleration problems or shifting problems. For a while I thought that it might have been the K&N filter, but that wasn't it.

I've had a similar problem which was resolved.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I looked this post up a couple of weeks ago. I am probably going to take it to the dealer and see what they have to say. I will give you an update once I hear something! Thanks again.

In a reply to andyschneider . . .the noise happens anytime without regard to radio on/off, A/C on/off or temperature. My wife coaches cross-country at a local high school and noticed it when she was driving between 20-30 mph with her runners. She first told me that it only happens at those speeds, but we later realized it seems to be when you are accelerating and you reach speeds of 15 to 70. If you take your foot off of the gas, however, it doesn't happen. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the inner workings of an engine to really have an idea of what this annoying noise could be. Since we are both teachers, we plan on taking it in this summer and telling the dealer to keep it as long has they have to, just fix it! After more of a description, does anyone have any ideas? I really think the problem is mechanical. But who knows.

I noticed that mine does this from about 20-55mph. After that I can't hear it due to road noise. It does continue to make the noise with the radio off and ac off. Does anyone think it might be a speed sensor or map sensor?

Does anyone else that experiences this problem have the jet kit? I believe that this was used for the recall on the transmission. I have one on mine and I am wondering if this has anything to do with it.

I hope this can be of some help since noises can come from all sorts of places. This sounds exactly like a problem I had with my '94 Accord. This "cricket" noise only happened when I accelerated and drove me nuts! I finally located the issue near the air intake where the air filter is. The assembly of the air filter holder is screwed into the frame with movable rubber mounts. When the car accelerates the assembly moves and vibrates as more air is sucked into the engine. One of these mounts in my car started making noise that was very annoying (exactly like a cricket) so I hit it up with some old fashioned WD40. After a few shots of WD40 and some shaking of the air filter assembly to get the rubber mount lubed up the noise was gone. In your case one of these mounts may be possibly loose, too tight, or starting to corrode. I attached a picture to show you where one of the mounts is on the Pilot. I am sure there are others that are not only for the air filter but other parts of the engine as well. I hope this may be the cause of your issue since it's an easy fix! :) You just have to find which one it is. Take care...

The previous post triggered a thought - maybe it's the infamous "throttle cable bracket rattle" that's described in this thread.
MSTEWART
I tried the throttle cable bracket fix and it didn't seem to fix it. I thought for a little bit that it fixed it but then I hit 2nd or 3rd gear (30mph) and it came back. I asked the dealer today if they have heard about this problem and they said no. Back to square 1!
