subwoofer replacement for 2006 EX-L - Click HERE for Original Thread

Looking to replace the subwoofer WITHOUT:
1. changing the HU or adding an amp, needs to run off existing HU

2. building a separate enclosure or having to modify rear panel (I know it's tight)

Does anyone know the exact mounting depth the subwoofer would need to be in order to fit perfectly in existing spot?

Also, please post exact Make, Model numbers and price so other members will have this information to follow down the same path.

I have an 05 but there are several threads up here to this effect.

The Head unit doesnt put out enough power to effectively drive a descent sub. The sub that is in there is 2ohms and a real piece of junk, so the only real option (after my year of due dilligence) is to put in a descent sub with an amp.

If you do a search on "subwoofer" and limit it to the Audio & Electronics section, you'll find everything you need to know about replacing the stock sub and various specs but if you are not adding an amp at least, it's not going to sound very good. Any particular reason why you do not want to add an amp?

My aftermarket HU was acting up so I wanted to put my stock HU back in. Since the stock HU does not have line-level sub outputs I by-passed the stock sub and hooked the stock subwoofer wires to the speaker-level input on my amp and then used my aftermarket sub and custom box.

I just did this 2 days ago. It doesn't sound nearly as good! The stock HU has dramatic equalization built in and does not send a "pure" signal to the sub. The sound was muddy and the lowest frequencies are rolled off because the stock sub can't handle them.

Without the amp, it would sound just as muddy except you would barely be able to hear it because there is not enough power from the HU to drive the high quality sub.

The only way to get around this would be to use something like the JL Audio CleanSweep but the cost was too high for me.

Quite simply put, without adding an amp, there is no benefit to changing the sub. It may even sound worse.

If I want to replace the sub, I need to get an amp to power it... got it.

First, I will replace all the door speakers and see how it sounds, maybe that will be good enough for me but if I do decided to go for it and switch out the sub then which model will fit in there perfectly (please provide model/make/price) without any modifications?

someone has mentioned that a JL Audio subwoofer fits... which make and model? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure any JL sub will fit. To put any sub in place of the factory sub, you will need to have a trim ring/spacer made. This allows a bit more depth in there. The only JL subs that might fit are the W3 v2 or the new W1 v2.

I found that going with a 5 channel amp works really well. That allows you to feed the sub channel using the signal that is going to the door speakers. Unlike the sub output, this signal is not crossed over so you get the full frequency range. This allows you to tweak that sub x-over settings to your liking.

Also, speaking as one who can run with a sub in a box, a sub in the stock location or no sub at all, no sub really sucks. The music just has no body or power to it.
