I'm getting an iPod! Now what? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Wifey is getting me an iPod for our anniversary (I'm getting her watch fixed and having the windows tinted on her Outback). So, what's the best way to hook it up to the Pilot?

My sis-in-law has an FM modulator that sucks. I read a couple of direct wire ones aren't compatible with an in-dash CD player (which I have). I read the USA spec one only lets you have five playlists.

Is there one I can hook up to the CD changer cable under the seats? I'm not brave enough to open up the dash (I don't think) and start pulling stuff out.

I'd like to put one in the Subie, too, since I drive that on my solo weekend jaunts.

Any help?

We did a Blitzsafe adaptor in our 2003, very easy install with the help of the XM install thread (I posted my install as well for the XM and Ipod there). Lots of different ways to go, but via the CD changer is one of the best for sound quality.

I would rec getting some type of Ipod case on DAY ONE! If you fart near mine it scratches!

Good luck and enjoy!

The Novus Plastic Scratch Remover and Novus Plastic Cleaner and Polish, which I bought at a Harley dealer, polished some nasty looking scratches out of my black iPod video.

Do you have an aftermarket CD changer or a factory installed one? If you have an aftermarket one, there is a good solution.

As for cases, here is the best one I have found. They get great reviews from everything I have read and I have ones for the Video and Nano.

best "case" I have found for my 5g is www.bestskinsever.com once its on you wont even know its there. I tried other cases and they always got in the way, kept me form using adapters etc. This one is about 7 bucks and is super sturdy. Just takes some patience to put it on, but no biggie.

sorry drifting again from your original Q.. I have RES and have my adapter hard wired into the aux inputs. I actually prefer to use the IPOD from the center console to control it. I use the IPOD menu more than vol up or down or one song to the next, so the controls from the steering wheel were not that big of a deal to me.

Does that case cover the screen? I couldn't tell from the description. Also, will it still allow you to use a docking station. That would be really nice.

Yea they give it to you with all the pieces cut out, so you can pick and choose how you want it covered. I put the full front on, the center jog wheel and the back, but left the shuttle wheel part off, I like the feel of the stock wheel. It totally wraps around the whole unit like a very durable skin, I can still use all of my accessories and docks with no problems. I wish they came this way from Apple.

try NeverDull. its a wadding material in a can that has some metal cleaner/polish in it, works great on metal surfaces, I think I find it in the grocery store where the silver polish is. Its also avail at the auto parts places in the detail section.

Saw this at Circuit City
Harman Kardon Drive + Play iPod/Car Interface

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/prod...gcfkmdffhdfko.0

I haven't seen anyone post anything about it on this site.

The guy at Circuit City said that there's a direct connection feature which can be used ( extra part) to connect to the radio ( probably not what you're looking for )

I don't have this but this is one of the hookup
setups I'm looking at aside from the ones
posted here.

Does anyone here have this setup or have any opinions about this product?
( on the site there were some reviews/ratings though)

Harman Kardon Drive + Play (DP1US)

Keep your mind on your driving: Drive + Play puts the familiar iPod menu on a backlit display right on your car’s dashboard or windshield, where you can read it at a glance. The system is controlled by an intuitive interface that mimics the navigation on your iPod, and is just as easy to use—browse by artist, album, song, genre or composer. Mount it someplace convenient and you can scroll through playlists or switch tracks at your leisure, all while keeping your eyes on the road.

Simple controls: The control knob is virtually identical to iPod’s Click Wheel so it is immediately familiar to iPod users. With three mounting bases for the most comfortable placement, the Drive+Play will be your right-hand man.

Nerve center: The brain is the hidden central hub of the Drive+Play. You can connect your iPod and place them both out of sight under a seat, in the glovebox or in the center console, with no messy wires and no chance for damage to your iPod. It even charges your iPod when it’s plugged in.

Professional installation: To maximize the potential of your new Drive+Play, you’ll need a clean, professional installation. Circuit City’s Roadshop can make sure everything’s in tune with your car’s audio system, and keep the wiring secure and hidden from view.

Multiple mounting options: You can connect Drive + Play in one of three ways. Use a 3.5mm audio line output, a wired FM transmitter or the wireless FM transmitter with five preset frequencies.

Auxiliary in: The unit has a second auxiliary input to provide access to other audio devices like satellite radio receivers or a cell phone without unplugging your iPod.

Compatibility: The Drive + Play works with 3rd and 4th generation iPods, color iPods, iPod mini and iPod nano.
( what about 5th gen ipods ?)

On my 5G iPod, i use BestSkinEver wrap. Cheap and cover the whole iPod (Front, back and sides). These parts are very similar to my 3M clear bra on my Pilot, accept its thinner. I do not use the wheel protector that come with it, instead i use another brand 3-D clear protector only for the click wheel on the iPod. I then slide them into my "45 days of waiting period" Orbino Leather Case.

On the Pilot, I use USA-Spec PA11-HON to interface with my Pilot. I have control at steering wheel and also on the iPod itself. Been using it for the last 3~4 months with no problem and the sound quality is soooooooooooo much better then using cassette interface or FM transmitting (tried both of them).

I'm still thinking about the direct wire set-up for the Pilot, but I bought wifey a cassette interface for the Subie and her iPod shuffle. The interface works pretty well, WAY better that the FM transmitter my SIL has.

I also took the advice of a case, and found a leather case, with a flap to cover the screen and wheel.....a tad pricey, but looks sweet and will provide good protection for my new toy.

Well, I bought a Navi, so the tape deck is no longer an option, but in the past I've had good luck with some cassette adapters. The best indicator of quality that I've found is that the good ones (not necessarily the most famous brands, but based on sound quality) tend to have a head that looks like an auto reverse cassette deck head. In other words, it looks a little like two plus signs stacked on top of each other, and the overall shape looks almost square. In contrast, the others look like a single plus sign, and are quite rectangular. It doesn't correlate with brand, or even cost. (If anything, I think the lesser known brands are more likely to have the good design. I know Recoton used to, as did Discwasher.) You just have to look.

For those of you for whom these are an option, I hope it helps.
waynerd
Samster, I forgot about this thread.

Since I got the Ody, I no longer have a cassette deck, either. I bought an FM transmitter from Kennsington and it seems to work well. I'm still contemplating a little more "permanent" solution.

BTW, I noticed on your signature you're considering wwongs pads and silver stripes. Get the pads, and the B-pillar protection. As for the silver stripes, a friend has an almost identical Redrock Pilot to mine, but she has silver stripes.....doesn't look quite right. Maybe because they were placed along the break around the door hundles. I got gold metalic stripes on the van and I think they look pretty sharp, especially with the tan interior.

You have a great wife. I think I would be served with divorce papers if I tinted her car windows for an anniversary!!! You must be lucky :)f
waynerd
After 15 years, ya just kinda run outta "stuff" to get. She's not big into jewelery or clothes. We've got way too many "collectables".

Besides, her car was like a rolling terrarium on sunny days, so she really wanted it tinted.
