| I have a 2003 Honda Pilot with 170,000 KM & the VTM-4 light remains on in the dash. Are there any OBD2 readers out there for sale that can read the VTM-4 codes? I have a high tech Monitor Elite SPX OTC reader that can read all OBD2 codes but cannot read the VTM-4 trouble codes. I prefer to get to know my vechicle rather than take it to the dealer. I believe that the issue may be related to the front right wheel sensor due to salt? |

| I think any reader should work, but I don't think it will specifically read what the VTM-4 code is. BTW, when was the last time the VTM-4 fluid was changed? |

| I had the VTM fluid changed approx one month prior to the light comming on at the Honda dealer. I am unable to read the code with the OTC reader. |

| I would take it back to the Stealer and have them take a look at it. Just say that the light came on a couple days after the fluid was changed and only recently that you had time to come in. |

| Yes, I can take it back to the Honda dealer & have the VTM4 trouble code scanned at my expense. However, I would prefer to invest in my own VTM-4 code reader if it exists on the market. Can anyone answer my question if there any OBD2 or other code readers out there for sale to the general public that can read the VTM-4 codes? |

I have been having this same problem.
Thanks to the ppl that replied i went to autozone (free use of their scanner! worked great - THANKS)
came up with code p1491
on this site and msn auto this seems to be a common problem with the EGR valve @ 31k light driving in Florida (no snow/harsh or v4 use since purchase). I was going to call honda tomorrow and ask about status on this issue and if they plan to do a recall/replace.
codes read:
p1491
p1456 |

Hi pilotokinetics
I answered your question on the other thread, pleas double check.
I also took time to look inti the TBS again, Your ERROR P1419 is the error code for the EGR valve replacement, for USA
Tell them TBS 05-026 July 20, 2005, and may not have to bring your EGR letter, but if you have the letter handy, bring with you.
Should be free under warranty EGR letter.

and from VIN 5FNRL18..3B000001 thru 5FNRL18..3B067057
2003 Pilot – From VIN 2HKYF18..3H500001 thru 2HKYF18..3H567864
Warranty Extension: EGR Valve Contamination or EGR Port Clogging May
Cause DTC P0401, DTC P1491, or Engine Hesitation/Surge
(Replaces 00-009, Odyssey Warranty Extension: EGR Port Clogging, dated March 4, 2003)
BACKGROUND
In some 1999–03 Odysseys and 2003 Pilots, the EGR
system may become contaminated or clogged. If this
happens, the vehicle may hesitate or surge during light
acceleration, and the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp)
may come on with DTC P0401 (EGR insufficient flow)
or P1491 (EGR valve insufficient lift).
Because of these possible problems, affected vehicles
now have a warranty extension that covers EGR port
clogging and/or EGR valve sticking.
Here are the details of the extended coverage:
P1491 (EGR valve insufficient lift). |

I've looked into this. All I could come up with is a Honda Diagnostic System, which is a fairly expensive proposition for a DIYer.
An OBD-II reader will do just that- read OBD-II codes and nothing more. All the other stuff (like VTM-4, etc) are manufacturer-specific, thus you need a Honda-specific scanner for that stuff. Basically, if you get a Check Engine light, an OBD-II scanner (that talks ISO9141 protocol), it'll pull codes for that but nothing else.
I've got a VAG-COM for my VW I bought used for $100 (new is $200 or so), I wish there were something in that price range for the Honda. My VAG-COM doubles as a generic ISO9141 compliant scanner, so I can use it for any CEL codes. |
