Help! Noise again, plus door lock prob. too! - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi all! First post, so pls. bear w/ me. I have 03 EXL Pilot, 49K - love it! Hoever, I had a string of bad luck over the last few weeks. First, one headlight died. Thanks to this forum and members, I was able to fix that no sweat!
Next is the low "thugging" noise coming from underneath. The closest sound that I can describe it is, you know if you have driven forgetting to release the parking brakes - then you hear a sort of thugging noise underneath - the sound is close to that. I will hear that when I approach 55mph and will get a bit louder and more in frequency over that speed. I drive back roads to work everyday and I rarely go over 50, so it may have been a problem that I just did not notice for some time time now. It just so happened that I have to use the Parkway the past 3 days and noticed that sound. Could it be I will need wheel alignment???
Also today, I learned that the automatic lock on the passenger side rear door is no longer working. Could there be anything that I can check that may be loose or disconnected???
Any help, ideas will be appreciated!

Hey Jim, welcome to the Org. Few more Q's for you

Does the car steer funny or run to one side on the parkway?

How many miles on your current set of tires and do you balance them?

When was the last time you had your brakes looked at? Usually not an issue with symptoms like this, but that was the issue/noise on my wifes Ody at 30,000 miles.

For the passenger lock, does it work with the remote and/or the door switch?

This is a smart bunch, someone here will figure it out for ya!

Thanks, CMasten!

No, the car does not steer - stays on course at any speed. Just a slight vibration as I speed beyond 55.

I have 2 new front tires. I just had it replaced Dec. last year and i assumed the dealer balanced the new tires. Rear tires are still original. Planning to replace them very soon. One thing i have not done eversince is having the wheels aligned.

The brakes were serviced around 35K miles, so it is still fairly new.

As for the locks not working, I meant using the remote. Manually, i can push it up and down.

Thanks again!

The most common problem with the lock knob is the actuator. (The electric motor attached to the door latch.) Diagnosing would be to remove the door panel to access the actuator connector. Verify that it is getting voltage when the main lock switch is operated. Most of the time it's the actuator. Have a shop manual??
Second probabiltity might be a bad pin fit at a connector.

The other complaint sounds like a tire problem. Does the noise speed up with the car? (Like a card in a bicycle spoke).

Well if it was alignment you would feel it pull or the wheel would hop etc, I am wondering if its a dead spot or other in your newer or older tires? not so much tread seperation but just a defect in the tire that you never noticed.

On the doors, does your remote open the driver door but just not the passenger? Easy enough to just drop a new CR2025 cell into the remote (or try the other if you have both) and see if that does it. Strange things happen when the battery gets low. If the remote is fine but the passenger door still doesnt work then I would check the fuse, The manual would have it marketed or I have the service manual if we need to dig deeper. I seem to remember another person up here with a very similar issue on the door lock. We'll get it figure out

Rapid Rob knows this stuff inside and out though, so maybe the actuator is the deal, I always like to start simple though, then work into the harder diagnosis :)

I couldn't atke it anymore, so last Friday I took the car to the tire dealer. They told me, it couldn't possibly be the 2 new tires they put in a few months ago. So to see if it was indeed tire problem (thanks to Rob and Cmasten) I decided to have the 2 rear tires replaced even thought there is still some thread life in them. Anyway, after I got back the car, I got to the nearest highway and hit 55 and over and voila!, the bubbing noise is gone. So lesson learned - never replace just a pair set of tires!

As for the door lock problem, it is still there. I don't have a service manual now and I'd be squirmish in trying to tear the panel open. But if it will save me a few hundreds, I'll probably give it a shot. Are those door lock mechanism or the actuator, like a modular replaceable part?

See my last post in the SECURITY SYSTEM thread.
It's not easy to get things back together & working.
