HP 2003 Valve Adjustment - Click HERE for Original Thread
Res-Pilot
For those of you who have Honda Pilot 2003 Model with noise and noise come from an engine area this may the only solution to solved it:

The problem I had was noise almost every where coming from engine area, catalytic convert, Pipe A, and an area where Steering pump is. Even the vechicle is idle I can still hear the click!!! noise, lots of noise when hit the gas and pretty much under power.

Back in March Dealer replace (1) Steering Pump, (1) Water pump (1) timing belt (1) Pipe A, (1) Catalytic Converter, (1) Alternator. All under warranty, but the excessive noise still there. I brought to the Dealer three more times, the mechanic stated that's normal. By May my warranty run out so I went to the local mechanic with all the latest equipment he had plus he's a former Honda & Nissan Mechanic.

He try everything he know including "Throttle Cable Bracket". Still no success. Until he's removing the plastic engine head cover then, he's said I found the problem, but he's doesn't understand why a 45K need to adjust a valve. But, he going through the Michelle Repair DVD he's going to work on it tomorrow and I'll let you all know.

For the dealer Mechanic tell me different story. They said never adjust your valve because your vechicle came with hydraulic valve which mean it adjust it self. THAT B<>S<>T. That what happen when I took a dealer mechanic advise since March and here it is May my Pilot noise still there. Not only that dealer mechanic still insist Pilot using hydraulic Valve and they didn't even bother to look into it.

I hope thist last attempt to solve the problem with my local mechanic.

I have a similar noise....Honda mechanic says it is normal....what happened after the valve was adjusted?????

Check out your 'Normal' maintenance schedule for 105,000 miles. I think you'll find an item labeled "Inspect valve clearance'. If, indeed, the engine had hydraulic lifters, I don't think there would be a requirement to inspect the valve clearance. Additionally, I believe there is a procedure in the maintenance manual to, in fact, adjust the valves. Also it's interesting to note that the valves have a clearance spec of .020-.24mm intake, and .28-.32mm exhaust. Right about now I'd bet my next paycheck that this engine does not have hydraulic valve lifters. Sounds like easy money to me.

A6 is right on. The manual says 105K and adjust otherwise "only if noisy." If hydraulic, would only use adjustment procedure if valve train had been disturbed in some way. They are not hydraulic. Mine passed the 105K, but it is so quiet, I did not check them. I figured there was more chance of me making it worse than better by doing it, and it is a fairly complicated job to take apart all that and adjust. But, one is also to check timing belt and water pump at that time. I didn't.

A couple of notes.

Tight valves (the usual wear mode) does not make noise, so checking them is important.

At 105,000 miles it says to CHANGE the timing belt, not just check it.

N_Jay is right. Valves should be checked, and I misspoke when talking about the belt - I should have said CHECK the water pump and REPLACE the belt. I have checked the valves on my motorcycle before and they were perfect, and it is a lot of work. And if youre not careful, you may make it worse. But yes, they should be checked.
