| Hello Hondapilot.org. Just wanted to let you all know that I have relocated to sunny Florida, Crestview area. It is about 30 minutes away from Ft. Walton Beach, oh yeah, I am also getting divorced. My kids will remain with my wife in Virginia Beach. So I am constantly driving up there to see them. I have done the drive 6 times already since Feb 06, and it sucks. 15+hours. I decided to get a V1 detector. I am hoping that it will significantly improve my times. I don't plan on taking it past 130.;) Just kidding folks. Anyways, I searched the forums and found a few posts that I liked. I am also looking for suggestions. I want to hardwire it in, but I also want to have it "hidden" from view from Smokey. I have a remote display with the detector. If anyone has any ideas on where to mount this, please let me know. Thanks for the help guys. |

I've got my V1 mounted to the left of the mirror with the suction cups just next to those little black dots. This puts the V1 behind the tint so it can't be seen from outside the car. (I'm sure you know that dectectors are illigal in Virginia) The only problem is you can't pull the visor down all the way.
Laser reception doesn't seem to be affected by this location, but hey, if the hit you with laser and your speeding no dectector will help you. The V1 doesn't emit a detectable signal so you safe from smokey's radar dectector detector.
I ran the wiring across the headliner to the left windshield pillar and down to the fuse box. See the instructions for installing a auto dimming mirror for an '04 Pilot. |

A few points:
1. Radar detector detection: since RDs are illegal in VA, this matters a lot. Without going into too much detail, there are the VG-2/VG-3/VG-4 RD detectors and the Spectre RD detectors. Most RDs are good at avoiding detection by the VG-2. .But NOT the Spectres. Even the V1!! I suggest the Bel STI Driver, which is the only RD undetectable by all RDDs.
2. Tint strip: this compromises radar and laser detection capabilities, I suggest lowering the RD to below the tint strip. The windshield mount can be on it, just the RD antenna should have clear glass.
3. Laser protection: The STI isn't as great as the V1 in laser detection but most of the time the RD laser alert is 'your speed has been acquired by laser'. Even with the V1 one can't fully rely on it for laser. Your best bet is getting some passive or active anti-laser protection.
4. Remote display: while the V1 remote display is the best5. out there, Bel offers a SmartCord directwire which is adequate. www.radarbusters.com is a great place to get RDs, Roy even has a case within which the STI can be mounted for stealth.
5. Mounting location: up high is best for radar, low for laser. Just below rear view mirror is best for both.
Hope this helps.
BTW, I plan to hardwire my RD to the map lights as I don't want to go thru the headache of wiring it all way to the fuse panel for a fuse that comes on with ignition. Maybe I'll go thru the pain. |
