Hey folks, just bought a new 06 Pilot yesterday. LX, AWD.
Anyhow, like the car, but my wife is going batty with what appears to be the "fuel pump whistle". She has tinnitis to begin with, so this makes things even worse. It's loud enough that you can hear it while driving down the road with the windows open. The dealer seemed to think it would get better as we got a few miles on the car.
I've read that others have had the same problem, but most people appear to be just accepting the noise and moving on. I'm not sure my wife can put up with it though. Has anyone gone through replacing the fuel pump and had success with the noise getting better or going away?
We compared a couple of Pilots, and all had varying amounts of noise, from ours being about the loudest, to some that were almost non-existent.
Does the noise go away after some time? After a fuel pump replacement? Seems like most people have the problem to one degree or another from the searches I've done here. I couldn't find the sound though in the sound archive - does it still exist?
Thanks... |

Wow - you probably saw my posts for the exact same problem My wife's 04 has close to zero noise, buty my '06 has a fairly audible noise. Went to the dealer and listened to a couple others, and some were louder, some were quieter. The dealer was willing to do a swap with me, but couldn't guarantee it'd make things better or not.
I've got 5400 miles on mine so far - noise is the same, perhaps a bit more noticible (or maybe I'm just tuned into it and driving with the windows more). It isn't a functional problem - a bad fuel pump will start to grind - been there, done that.

I looked up in my factory manual at the design of the '06 pump- someone had stated that the pump WASN'T inside the tank in the other thread, but this is incorrect. The pump indeed is inside the tank.
I suspect, not seeing the pump firsthand but merely looking at the diagram, that there isn't an adequate amount of vibration isolation on the pump. In my '03 Passat, the pump floats on 6 rubber isolators, and the only way you hear the pump is if you put your ear to the floor where the pump is located.
My Pilot's pump is audible outside the vehicle, not inside. It seems louder as the tank empties (as an empty tank will reverberate the pump whine more).
One interesting note- the repair manual states that to get to the hatch where the pump is located, one must cut a flap in the carpet(!!) underneath the driver's side of the 2nd row seats, taking care not to cut the unseen wiring harness. That sucks. |

Bump, any other ideas?
Has anyone had success with replacing the fuel pump? The noise is *really* loud now, I mean I can hear her coming down the driveway from 100 feet away, before I hear the engine. |

My dealer has an open offer to replace mine. Did you push the issue with yours? That's about the only option I can see....

Thanks Andy...the option is to replace the fuel pump, or the whole car? I'm assuming just the pump. We're only 70 miles into ours, so a whole car replacement I think wouldn't be out of the question, maybe easier. |

I dont see a dealer or honda eating the depreciation on the car and taking it back (unless they leagally have to)... |

Member clarity talked a dealer in Maryland into letting her swap vehicles after a week or so. I'll have to search and see if she ever explained it in on the board. |

Sorry. :D I meant the fuel pump, not the vehicle. Other than a vocal fuel pump, my 06 has been great! Wouldn't trade it at all!

its not a swap right...
if the registration for the vehicle shows as sold it has lost value.... why would the dealer eat the cost   |

That's where she got lucky. The tag and title work had not been done yet, so "officially" it wasn't registered in her name; that made it easier for the dealer to swap it and still sell the first one as new. |

Hello. I have an 05 Pilot with around 22k miles. Just last week a audible high pitched whining noise cropped up that is audible in the cockpit. My wife at first thought she was going crazy but it is definitely there. It appears to be coming from under the middle row passenger seat. Could this be the fuel pump. My problem with this noise is that is on all the time. Even when the doors are closed and the ignition is NOT on and the car not running Really weird!
Any help? |

| I hear this also, most noticeable first thing in the am but mine is not loud enough to be hear inside with the doors closed.. I would have the dealer look at it. with the ignition not on.. and you still hear it is not a good sign. |

I'm getting the same noise on my '07. It is rather annoying. I didn't notice such a noise at all when I first got it. It only has about 1500 miles on it now.
I would also be interested to hear if anyone has been able to get rid of this noise. |

I have the same problem with my new 07 LX. The dealer changed the fuel tank and the noises did not go away.
Since the titile has changed, they would not change the vehicle and now claim it is product characteristics and would not honor any repair.
While some are louder and some are not. The dealer showed me a few new pilots and mine was the loudest. It is audible in the whole parking garage in my office, while eveyone is surprised by the noises.
I am sensitive to high pitch noise and it is driving me nuts.
I have talked to Honda America and they assigned a case manager working on it, and will keep you posted on their action.
Any good advise on how to get this fixed? |

| I purchased an '07 and on day two I heard the noise while it was garaged. Hi pitch whine, and not all the time. Took it back to the dealer, had a service mgr and mechanic listen and they said it was the fuel pump. Has a higher pressure this year, said it wasn't a problem. Not sure I believe that part of it, as I have an '03 that doesn't make a sound. Also not sure I hear other '07s with it. I might have it checked out again soon just to be sure, or at least go and see if I hear it on others on the lot. |

My '06 has a more audible fuel pump sound than our '04 did - and this was side-by-side comparison in the garage. But most '06/'07's have a louder pump (my passing observation) - but by no means as loud as when there's a problem. Just the way it is. I don't notice the louder sound any more after 20k miles .....

I wish I had some good advice. I have tried to get help from Honda in the past and they never do. Good luck, and keep us posted. |
