My 06 has just about 5,000 miles and I have about 30% oil life left. In a couple of weeks I will be going on vacation which is a 5 hour drive away. Should I get the oil changed before I go or wait until I get back (2 weeks later).
What else is performed at the first service visit? If I do the service before the wrench comes, will that mess up the timing of all the other services?
Thanks. |

| IMO, do the first oil change now before the trip |

| Agreed, I've always heard if you are close to a change, do it before you go on a long road trip instead of after. |

| I'd get it changed. I usually do the first oil change on a new Honda at 3750 miles as there may be some debris from the break-in process. I'm almost to that mark on our Pilot, and I'll post my findings once the oil is drained. But if you are going on a road trip, definitely do it before you head out. |

5 hours away is about 400 miles away?
every 10% life on Pilot is around 600 miles if mostly hwy driving.
some ppl said the oil from the factory is a special blend, the more you leave it in there, the better. :)
But the choice is up to you. first service is only oil/filter change. You won't mess up other services as '06 Pilot is using the maintenance minder now. |

Don't change it until you need to. You would be wasting money in unnecessary oil drains that are of no benefit because your oil is OK.
I use Amsoil 5w30 and run the engine 15,000 miles with that oil. Amsoil is supposed to be good for 25,000 miles or 1 year, I drive about 20,000 miles a year. |

OMG, here we go again! There are about a hundred posts discussing (debating) how often to change oil and also when to do the first change. The word is that Honda wants the first oil change at approximately 7500 miles as they have some sort of additives they want in the engine during the "break-in" period. Do a search. I would do one but its late and I am going to sleep.
As to the original question, if you are at 5000 now, at 5 hour trip each way at 60 mph would add about 600 miles. Two weeks of running around might be 750 - 1000 miles. That would put you at close to 7000 when you get back. I would do it after the trip so that the OFL change will cover the trip. You appear to have enough miles left to wait.
I did my first at 7000 (long trip coming and I would have definitely gone way over), then at 14500 (just within recommendations) and will do the third at 20000. Every 5000 after that. |
