Unable to down shift - Click HERE for Original Thread
bluesteel
Just bought a 2006 Pilot EX 2WD. Drove it for a week and notice that I cannot down shift on a long downhill run so I have to use the brakes to slowdown. Called the dealer and no one has heard of this problem. Now I cannot shift to D3, second or first gear when I car is not even moving. Anyone out there know what it might be?

I think at this point you need to visit the dealer and show him the problem.

I know this is an obvious, stupid question. You are shifting using the Pilot's unique column shifter movement pattern, aren't you?

The column shifter movement pattern does take some time to get used to. Don't know if later model years did, but the early 03's came with a tag tied to the column explaining the pattern.

That's what I was thinking.
Bluesteel, when you shift from PARK to D the shifter will stop. If you want to go from D to D3 you have to go down without pulling the shifter towards you. Once your shifter is in D3, if you want to go to 2 or 1 you will need to pull the shifter towards you as you normally shift. If you are doing this and you still cannot shift lower than D, you need to get it checked out.

Don't know why I didn't reccomend that. I just play with things until they work, it's just a natural part of my thought process.

Hey bluesteel, if the shifter is the reason you couldn't get to the lower gears, don't be so ashamed you never post again. We've all been there at one time or another.

Maybe it's just me, but I find this post really funny.:D

My advice to the OP is just to create a new login and no one will know the difference ;)

I experienced this same issue the first time I drove my Pilot in the mountains and needed to down-shift to D3 to slow my descent. I could not get to D3 - it felt like it was locked and would break if I forced it

When I got home I noticed that I could not easily get my Pilot into any of the lower gears, even sitting in my driveway with the engine off. I ran the shifter through the pattern several times and noticed that it was very stiff.

I have done this exercise several times and I now have noticed that the shifter has loosened up and is much easier to down-shift while driving.

I don't think it loosens up as much as you get used to the pattern.
