A/C Stinks to High Heaven - Click HERE for Original Thread

My 2005 Pilot's A/C stinks every time we turn it on. It smells like a weird mix of various chemicals......the best thing I can compare it to...it smells like a human sneeze...you know, that lingering smell in the air that you smell right after you sneeze.

Has anyone else had the pleasure of smelling this?

You probably have molds in the air vents & a/c filter. Try replacing the a/c filter w/ a new one & see if the bad smell goes away.;)

What you're smelling--if it is more than just musty odors, replacing the filter will do nothing.

You probably have mold in the system. I had this happen on my 02 Passat. They had to introduce a foam to the evaporator box in the AC system and it had to coat the entire inside of the evaporator and the related areas.

The actually drilled a hole in the box and added a "port" there so it can be reused. The kinds of spray that are supposed to work for this rarely can introduce enough foam to actually kill the mold. It pays to have a professional do it, although ours was covered under warranty.

After the treatment--which took several hours, we still had lingering smell for about a week. That smell gets into the interior. After that, it was gone and never came back.

Have it checked because deodorizer won't do jack if it really is a mold problem.

good luck!

I had mold once in my 1991 Honda Accord wagon. I sprayed Lysol into the fresh air induct under the hood vents running the A/C and then not running the A/C got rid of the problem.

Yeah, that foam stuff really works. I remember a few years back I had to edit a piece in which we did the story for that stuff. You can also use some stuff called Frigi-Fresh (FrigiFresh), it works in almost the same fashion.

I googled it and found it online and you can do the same.

edit: The Lysol doesn't do crap in the long run. The smell and mold will come back after some time. I know from experience :4:

Can you use the Frigi-Fresh like you do the Lysol, by just spraying it in the air intakes at the base of the windshield?

ok this makes more sense... about what I would expect it to cost (6.50) a can

Jay from what I am reading, it is applied the same way, they say to make sure to let it all dry out though after you set your ac to full and hit the REC button and let it cycle through. I would imagine one would not want to jump the the car soon after.. but then with Lysol you would not either so just common sense I guess :)

My concern is how did it develop on an 05. (I have one) It is only about a year old, depending upon when you bought it) Do you live in a humid climate or did you leave the windows down in the rain? Any clues as to how it started? :8:

No extra humidity or leaving windows open or anything like that. To have this problem on an '05 vehicle is a little concerning to me as well.

Thanks to everyone that has responded so far. I am going to try the BG Products FrigiFresh and if that does not make a difference, I will move on to the FrigiClean. If it is still hosed after that, it will be time to bring in the parasites.....oops, I mean experts.

In 20 months of Pilot ownership, with the system set to auto, I never had a problem. Both of my RX330s developed a bad smell early on (within 4 months) and I tried the Lysol route on the first RX 330. So far, after 3 months, no untoward odors from my xB. :p

Here's a link from the past. Perhaps that will help.

Back many years ago, we used to have that as a common occurrance in the first-generation Legends. We sought out a solution, and came up with a product called REP-70, it's a hospital antibacterial disinfectant that has no lingering odor. It worked wonders!

Not sure where to get it anymore, but it was 100% effective. Been about 10 years since I've seen a can of it.
