Nav doesn't located all places by name - normal? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've had a couple of incidences where the Nav system doesn't find a place of business I type in even though I know there is one in the area. Rather it will list choices that are way out of the area.

Example - yesterday when we were about 2 miles from our local Costco and I wanted to show my wife how the Nav could calculate alternate routes to the store. To our surprise, the Nav couldn't even find the dang place and instead listed the 'nearest' Costco to be in San Francisco 30 miles away. Now we know there are at least 2 other Costco's in the area closer than 30 miles, including the one we were practically right in front of.

So are there only limited number of businesses, restaurants, and other places of interest in the Nav database? If yes, how does HONDA determine which ones get in there?

My Garmin nuvi 350 does the same thing with certain "names." By the same token, it brought up several "Dover International Speedway" variations.

Some of the business register the name differently too.

For example, "BESTBUY" and "BEST BUY" can have 2 very different result.

You also have to make sure that Costco is not too new and does exist in your version of DVD. The Costco close to my house was built last year and is not on my DVD eithere.

I would choose a category first, then city, then the name of the first few characters of the place you want to go.

BTW, the Navi is made by Alpine, not Honda. :)

Yep. It's normal. My '06 doesn't list any of the 4 local Costco stores. But, my girlfriends '06 Civic Nav does list the Mountain View, CA Costco. And, I've also found that it might have some locations of a chain store but not all of them. For example, it lists many Trader Joe's locations but not the one in Pismo Beach, CA.

I'm guessing that either Costco didn't pay for listings or the company that actually puts it all together just didn't do a complete job. The theory though is that each update should have more POIs. Maybe that's one of the ways they get people to shell out $185 each year for an update :( .

Then there is goofyness in the way the data is actually in the database... Check this thread: http://www.hondapilot.org/forums/sh...hlight=jlee2070
