Hi all. My Makita 14.4v cordless drill chuck is slipping and needs replacement. I can't seem to be able to remove it so it can be replaced. I opened the chuck all the way and checked inside, but there is no screw which I can see to remove. Can anyone help me by giving me some direction? Any help would be apprecited. Thanks.

Is it reversible drill? If it's not, just put the chuck key & turn it counter clockwise until its loose. you can use a hammer to tap the key to loosen the chuck. Usually if it's reversible drill, there's a screw that you need to loosen inside the jaws of the chuck before you can remove the chuck.

It's a Makita cordless reversible drill with a Jacob keyless chuck. I tried backing it off and there is no screw inside the center of the chuck. Thanks for the reply.

My Makita has a screw. Maybe you don't see it because there is too much wood/dirt in there. The inside of a chuck is usually pretty scuzzy. Try blowing it out with compressed air.
The usual procedure is to remove the screw, then tighten the chuck onto the short side of the largest allen wrench that will fit. Next you hit the allen wrench with a hammer to loosen the chuck from the drill.

Just thinking back, when I'm drilling, I sometimes use a double sided bit. Maybe the bit got pushed back into the chuck and actually drilled out the head of the screw. Kind of bizarre but I think it happened. Thanks for the help everyone! I'll get the easy outs out today and try it after a little more inspection.

OOP! Easy outs won't remove the screw because it's left handed. Back to the think tank.

Finish the job and drill the screw the rest of the way out. The chucks 3 jawes will align the bit and keep it centered. If you've been living right you can just drill until the screw head pops off and remove the rest easily after you get the chuck out of the way.

Maybe I'll give that a try this weekend. Thanks.
