50,000 mile service - Click HERE for Original Thread

Actually, it was 53,000 miles of mostly (80% city driving; 20% interstate driving). I haven't had it in the shop since the 36K mile brake change, and most of these haven't been changed since the 15,000 mile service.

Here is the break down of what I had done with the prices (parts and labor included):

1) Transmission Flush $139.91
2) Rotate & Balance tires $34.95
3) Brake system Flush $99.95
4) A/C cabin filter & air Filter $108.59
5) Radiator system flush $109.46
6) Rear Diff. service $71.88

Grand total with Misc. supplies $625.67 including tax.

I get my oil change a Walmart with Mobil 1 pure synthetic for about $39.99 and Honda wanted about $90.00 for the same job, so I declined for that service. I wasn't up for an oil change anyway.

Thought everything was reasonable except for the cabin/air filter prices.
The did get me in and out in less than 4 hours.

Couple observations-

I know I'm usually my own worst enemy on over maintaining my car. And I bring this up only in the context of keeping the dealer's bill to a minimum.

Totally unnecessary / suspect expenses:
1. Flush radiator? My scheduled maintenance list shows the first flush at 120,000 or 10 years, then every 60,000 or 5 years after that. The dealer will try and make you fall for the "severe maintenance schedule. The book says "The normal schedule is fine for most drivers, even if they occasionally drive in 'severe' conditions.
2. Rotate tires, at $8/tire?
3. The cabin air filter can be bought for $50 at dealer, or $17 through Tim. You can do the math on this $108.59 item.
4. It's one thing to pay $139.91 for a transmission flush. But you gotta wonder if you're just getting a $50 transmission drain and refill. And that's a partial drain , because a high percentage of the fluid is never drained when you pull the plug.

I must admire a dealer who can present this bill with a straight face.

1. Transmission flush. Yeah, a dealer thing for most of us.

2. I get my rotated free with my lifetime alignment at Firestone dealer (Company owned, not independent franchise. They don't honor much of anything in my experience)

3. Brake system flush is a once every three years regardless of mileage IIRC. I definitely would let somebody do that so when they screw up I can sue them.

4. A/C Cabin and engine filter. Shame on you for not checking this board to see how easy they are. The cabin filter change requires a piece be removed (broken) on the first change but after that it is easy. We have a great DIY thread on this with pictures included.

5. Rest ok.

Gotta agree with A6 on this one. Looks like the $tealer raped you on a few of your items there.

1) tranny flush or was it a simple drain and refill? In any case, sounds a bit high to me.

2) rotate and balance tires. Also sounds a bit high, but hey, I don't have a balancer at home either.

3) brake flush. $100 seems a bit too high, but it sounds reasonable though.

4) cabin filter and air filter. OK, you defintely got bent over on this one. A cabin filter cost about $20 (give/take) and should take you about half an hour to change it out with the great DIY writeup that Hondaman2 did. Engine air filter, also about $25 (give/take) and less than a 5 minute ordeal.

5) VTM fluid change. Typical $tealer charge. Could have done it yourself with a $25 jug of VTM-4 fluid, $2 crush washers and a $10 fluid pump.

This is what I think the $tealer was doing after you drove off... :2:

Well, you know what they say about a fool and his money!

Yea, I know that I over paid for it all. I use my truck daily and cannot afford any type of breakdowns and am willing to spend the extra for good reliable service.

Since I don't have the time to do it myself or find someplace cheaper, I used them mostly out of convenience.

I'd be doing the same if I were in your shoes come to think of it.

Another reason why I went to the Honda dealer.

A few years ago, I took my Acura 3.2TL into a quickie oil change place (one that I've used for well over an year. In fact, I was going there about every 6 weeks do to the amount of driving that I was doing and changing my oil every 3000 miles).

Well, one day after getting the oil changed, I notice a oil spill on my driveway and took it to my Acura dealer. They said that they had replace the drain plug with the wrong size and had stripped the threads. The Acura dealer tried to re-thread it without success and had to replace for oil pan that cost me slightly over $400. The oil change place that I've been too since I got the car refused to do anything about it (they were will to put in one of those rubber one size fit all plugs, which I wasn't willing to take a chance with). Thought about taking them to court, but I just didn't have the time to mess with it all.

That's another reason why I use a reputable dealer most of the time knowing that they will honor their mistakes and usually have some kind of warranty.
