This is a stumper. I looked at the official Honda brochures and see these stats (cubic ft.):
Pilot:
volume behind 1st row: 87.6
total inside volume: 174.7
Odyssey:
volume behind 1st row: 147.4
total inside volume: 171.4
How can the Pilot have more TOTAL volume (even though width, height similar but the Odyssey is over a foot longer).
THEN, how is the volume behind the front seat so much different? Is it because you can (more easily) remove the Odyssey seats (or that they stow further in the floor)? |

Honda's site shows 153 cubic feet for the Pilot.

mmmmark, good to see another VWVortex Passat forum member here. :)
I don't know about the Odyssey but the 2006 pilot brochure has "EPA Passenger Volume (incl. cargo area)" listed as 174.7/170.3 (EX-L)" |

My wife and I bought a desk recently. We picked it up in our 2001 Odyssey. It would not fit in our 2006 Pilot because the opening is smaller. The Odyssey has a lower floor and a taller rear hatch opening.
Not going by numbers, just by sight the Odyssey seems to have more interior volume. The width and length are similar but the Odyssey interior height is greater. |

It doesn't make sense though. I can believe the 153 figure for the Pilot and the 170 figure for the Odyssey. No way in hell the Pilot has the same interior volume as an Odyssey. It's a foot shorter, and shorter in the interior, for goodness sake! |

Keep in mind that the volume figures would be like you filled the cabin with water. The Odyssey seems to have more of the "cab forward" design with less wasted space between engine and cabin.
I got my figures from both of the 2006 Honda brochures.
There are several Passat owners I've noticed on here. I guess the Pilot is a good complement. So far I'm liking this board a lot, but it's hard to top the Vortex!
I still don't see how 1 foot longer equates to 60 cu. ft. Seems to me that 12-15 would be more reasonable. |

| Part of the reason that cargo room is so much different is they are removing all of the second row seats in the Ody - in fact the seats do not stow. So you gain a HUGE amount of cargo room whereas the Pilot still has the seats inside. Passenger room is closer b/c the measurements assume the Ody has all of its seats installed. Still, there is a difference. |

| Thanks. That is what I was wondering. |

But it's inconsistent data with the Pilot - the Honda website says one thing and the brochure says another. My 2005 Pilot brochure says 176.9 cu ft while the website says 153 cu ft. |

Right, the design philosophy behind a minvan is to make it as spacious and efficient on the inside. Bear in mind it's also taller on the inside.

Brochures can be wrong. They can also arrive at those volume numbers differently.

There's a lot less of the tuner crowd here, or the "what's the biggest, stupidest looking wheels I can put on my car, handling be damned" crowd. :)
Then again, there's a lot less of the "crap, my car's flooding and the TCU and CCM are soaked" or the "my fuel pump died" or "my VW sucks" crowd.
I was trying to talk my wife into a new Passat wagon, with 4-motion, but she wanted an SUV, and wanted the 3rd seating row should our kids have friends. No minivan for her.

Really more like 18 cu. ft... a little here, a little there, plus the 12-15 from the extra length, it's quite reasonable to have that much difference. |

Ugh. Do I have to trade in my Mk4 Jetta for a B5.5 Passat just to fit in around here?
