| Checked my transmission fluid week after buying 06 Pilot, the level was considerably over the high indicator hole, the dealer is pretty far away, is it possible to drain a little fluid out without losing too much. It's about 1 1/2 inches above full mark. How much would you think I should drain before gets between low and fill marks, I don't have any extra fluid on hand if drain too much. And if I unscrew the drain plug, to drain some fluid is it ok to keep the original washer. Thanks |

| I would not worry about it unless you have some other symptom like "foamy" looking fluid, or fluid leaking/seeping |

| I don't have any signs of leaking but my good ole dad always drumed into me that overfilling was as bad as underfilling. I guess would like a margin of comfort on getting the fluid to the appropritae level. Seems like could build up higher pressures and cause some damage |

Good old dad has you worried for no reason.
The pressure comes from the pump and extra fluid does not lead to high pressure.
Excess oil in an engine can cause problems but only if it is hitting the crankshaft and getting turned into foam.
Are you sure you checked it right?
Like I said, I would not worry about a little extra ATF. |

| I'm pretty confident checked it right, of course being so new the fluid is pretty transparent but changed to another location to ensure on level ground and still reading high, does not appear to be from fluid in the tube that gets transferred to dipstick. How bout if I loosen the drain plug until starts dripping without removing till I drain off some of the excess. You seem sure of yourself on no ill effect from overfilled? |

Remember to check the level warm & within two minutes of turning the eng.off.
1&1/2" over sounds tooooo full. |

Gears already run in the oil so it is not like having above the mark makes any significant difference.
I would double check the fluid level, then if still high I would check the dip stick. (I have seem dipsticks of the wrong length, or where the stop has moved).
THEN, I would take it to the dealer.
Let them worry about it, its new! |

I just changed out my Ody and my Pilot this weekend, Its easy enough to just crack the drain plug and loosen it a couple of turns, to it drains slow, without dumping out 3 quarts. IMO you would good to drop about a quart and check it again, you can always add some back, but from what I know overfilling it is a bad thing... easy to just drop it a bit and get it within the marks. |

Hey RapidRob, Q for you. I just did 3 full 3.2 quart flushes in my wifes Ody, the last one came our really clean and I was going to just drop the trans fluid now when I change the oil so every 4/5k miles I change the both oil and Trans, that way I completely change the trans every 3rd oil change or about every 15k miles. Will that work or am I better off just waiting every 15k and changing it with the drop and drive and refill method?
Also is it a must to change the 4th time? seems really clean now, but thought I would check to make sure Im getting the benefit that am after. Since I am going with your 15k service on the trans maybe 3x is enough to keep it healthy?

Any tech at the dealership I know, with an automatic change their fluid every 15k. We bought our (certified) Pilot from them. They showed me the maint. records so I know it had two trans changes in 43k.
I did the flush once & now change it every 15k. Every 3 or 4 oil changes probably fits into that schedule.
If it's coming out clean I think your done. 15k from now it should come out still having a good color to it. Mine does. It always has a very small amount on the magnet, too. |

I have a concern about additional cavitation (foaming) going on when overfilled too much. There are additives to help prevent that, but I'm the "ounce of protection" type. |

Welcome MARKPILOT, I personally would back the plug out a bit and check until it reads correct.
BTW, I just did my second tranny fluid drain and fill this past Friday. I tow a lot and did my first change at 15k and the 2nd at 30k.
I moved to another houses with a different driveway, and got a FULL 4 quarts to drain out all three times. I used my wifes Tupperware which has marks to indicate how much came out..... Maybe the slope of the driveway affected my quantity of drain?? Maybe she found the plastic in the sink, still with red crap in it, and maybe she gave me the third degree about using stuff we eat out of to catch fluids
Anyway, after 3 drain/fill cycles, level was dead center between the marks....I checked it on a level supermarket parking lot. |
