Best way to remove tire shine stains from driveway? - Click HERE for Original Thread
787_Pilot
Hi folks,
I never realized that tire shine products such as these can stain your asphault driveway after use:

http://www.meguiars.com/?tire-care/...Spray-(Trigger)

http://www.meguiars.com/?tire-care/Hot-Shine-Tire-Foam

At first I thought I could just hose down the driveway and the grease stains would be gone but the darn spots are still there. Does anyone have any recommendations on cleaning products or methods to use to remove these type of stains from asphault? Have I permanently ruined my driveway? :(

I have the stains on my concrete driveway. Pressure washing didn't do a thing to them.

1) why would you shine your tires
2) if you like shined tires why would you not like a shined driveway
3) just do the rest of the driveway and show it off proudly.
4) Tell your driveway its a tire and the shine will be gone in 2 days (just like from your tires)

I've read Coke does the trick. I think you pour a can over the stain and leave it for a long time, scrub, and the stain would disappear. Not sure if it really works, but it's worth a try.

I just use Castrol Super Clean.
Helps get rid of that undesirable looking sheen on my driveway.

If you put some newpapers down beside the tires before you spray them you won't get any tire shine on the driveway.
CMasten
a drop or two of Dawn soap on ea area, and every tire shine spot I have is gone in a few days...

But then how do you get the shine off the newspaper?

Have you tried Simple Green? I use this stuff to clean almost everything around the garage. I buy it by the gallon at Home Depot. Try spraying a BUNCH on a towel (cheap terry towel, not a nice MF one for cleaning the car) basically soaking it. Then, spray a BUNCH (or just pour some) on the stain itself and then lay the soaked towel on the stain and let it sit there for a while (maybe 10 minutes to an hour). You can check every once in a while to see how it's going. Then, hose the area clean!

Hey, it's cheaper and easier than repaving your driveway :).

Let us all know how you eventually get it cleaned!

Good luck!
Larry.

I drive down to the park about a block away and apply the tire shine there.

Keeps my driveway CLEAN!:D

Duh, I used Simple Green to clean up some oil spots in the driveway from a contractor's van, but never thought to try it on the sheen from the Shine.:p I sprayed some on the oil, and used a steel-bristled concrete cleaning brush to get the oil up.

In FL, when the driveway got bad, I used to get about a dozen bottles of bleach. Pour on full strength. Do the whole driveway, then hose off using a push broom from keeping it from running on the grass edge. You will need sunglasses the next time you go outside, trust me.

Here is something interesting from the SimpleGreen website

http://consumer.simplegreen.com/cons_prod_pro_tips.php

quote:
Runoff: Cleaning on the street, in the driveway or garage: Even though Simple Green is non-toxic and biodegradable, it is still a violation of the Federal Clean Air & Water Act to allow the runoff to enter a storm drain or open body of water (lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, etc.) However, because it is non-toxic and biodegradable, you can clean vehicles over dirt, gravel, or grassy areas and then just water it in when done. Simple Green will biodegrade in the soil and will break down petroleum so that the natural bacteria in the ground can consume it.

Note: Be sure not to leave any sudsy puddles where animals or birds might drink.

I find the best way to keep the driveway free of tire dressing stains is to put you truck on the road when spraying but making sure it's in front of the neighbour's house when I'm spraying so it marks up the road in front of his house.:D

When I read the Washington Post newspaper, I get ink smudges on my hands. If the tires are sitting on newsprint, they'll get ink smudges on them.

Put this in an envelope and mail it to 2 weeks ago, "Pull the car out onto the street and park it before spraying the tire shine product on the tires."

That oughta do it.

brake cleaner spray! I tried that and it even removed the oil and grease on the driveway.

I'm not so sure you'd want to use that on an asphalt driveway. It may do more harm than good. Maybe test it in a inconspicuous area first.

Good luck!

I thought you guys meant concrete driveway, not asphalt, if it is then I would not use it.

Huh... That's funny. I gave the FL bleach method as a suggestion and just realized we were talking about asphalt after I read the 1st post again. I can't believe I was spared by the forum police.
