So i am in the market for a new digital camera. Its been 2 years since i ventured into the 'digital age', and i am going to put my fuji 6900z into semi retirement. I actually purchased the camera off of a fellow Piloter here on the site (ratso), and i have been very happy with it, but the time has come where i want more features.

I have been looking at the Canon dig rebel, Canon sd630, and fuji e900.
Still up in the air.

Anyone have an SLR type dig camera that won't break the bank ??

Any opinions are appreciated, thanks

for a relatively inexpensive digital slr camera, you can't go wrong with the canon digital rebel xt. body and lens will cost you about $750.

I have the Canon Rebel XT and love it. I wanted it so I could catch all of those candid shots that a point and shoot is too slow to get.

It has amazing picture quality as well.

I just purchased a Rebel XT from etronics, right down your street. I know a few others that have it and love it. Even the Nikon geeks can't knock it.

If you have kids, the best part is that it turns on in .2 seconds, so you won't miss a shot. And you can take up to 3 shots per second, 14 total.

Make sure you don't end up with a greymarket Cannon camera. One of my friends is a professional photographer, and he told me that if you get a greymarket camera, you'll have trouble getting it fixed by Cannon, even after the warranty is up or you want to pay for the repairs.

I don't think the nikon geeks can knock any canon digital camera! ;) most pros go canon nowadays.

right now I'm using a 20d, but that 5d sure does look nice!

Like you I have been drooling but haven't pulled the trigger yet. The two best IMHO appear to be the Cannon Rebel XT and the Nikon D70S. The only negative I have read and experienced when I tried on out is that the body is a little on the small side for the right hand. If you have smaller hands it will be perfect. For larger hands, the Nikon may be the better size. All a matter of personal taste. Try them out and play with them for a while.

(Now if they will have a good Christmas sale)

Etronics isn't an authorized dealer for Canon products, but I don't think they qualify as a Gray Market dealer. From their website:
While we do purchase most of the products we sell direct from the manufacturer of such products, many deny us official authorized status due to the fact that we do not adhere to their Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP) policies. MAP policies are a method manufacturers may use to ensure that retailers sell their products at a certain minimum price. Our philosophy has always been to sell products at the LOWEST possible price, even when these prices are below a manufacturer’s MAP policy guidelines.

Costco is sometimes not an authorized merchant, but their pricing and return policy are usually the best. What price did you get, an did it beat the Costco.com $799.99 deal on the Rebel XT?

Ferdball's link answered part of my question.

"There are a handful of manufacturers, however, who do NOT offer manufacturer warranties if purchases are not made through “authorized resellers”. These include Alpine, Pioneer, Denon, Yamaha and Acoustic Research. If an item from one of these manufacturers should need service under warranty, call us or email us to receive a Repair Authorization Number. In certain instances, we will permit you to ship the product back to us along with a description of the problem, and we will attempt to either honor or have honored the applicable manufacturers warranty. "

Costco's policy is much more appealing!

The Costco deal includes a printer, but who knows if it's worth $110. And I don't know what Costco's shipping charge is, but they'll refund it too if you return. Sounds like a good deal, Fartball, uh Fernball, uh, Fredball, uh Frodoball, uh...!:D

Looks to me that the Rebel XT is a good camera. From what i am reading from you all, and the reviews out there, I would be best to look further into this one.

Do the filter lenses really make a difference ??
Does the Rebel have movie mode w/sound ?

I've never used any filters other than a plain skylight or uv filter- just to protect the lens from scratching. Easier and cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a lens.

Nope, AFAIK the Rebel XT does not have a 'movie mode w/ sound'

both camera's are good, I have or had a D50 and just sold it for the new D80. Personally i like the feel of the nikon vs the canon xt. the canon was a little smaller and if you have small hands is perfect. Quality wise they are the same but canon seems to be lighter vs. the nikon. Not sure if they use lighter plastic but nikon seems like it would hold up better if dropped.

Unless you need the flexibility a true SLR camera offers, I'd recommend you go with a long zoom digital camera... like the Canon PowerShot S2 or S3.

I recently purchased the Canon PowerShot S2 IS and think it is great. It has 12x optical zoom, can record movies (up to 640x480 res) with sound (stereo) and has image stabilization. Another great feature is that it takes AA batteries, so in a pinch I can use alkaline. It's very quick and takes great photos. I got it for about $300. It doesn't have all the features of a true SLR, but I personally don't need all that.

I have the Nikon D50 and can't say enough positive about it. I went Nikon as I have lenses from my film days that fit it.

Having many years of Canon use - I know they are quality too.

Play with them both at the store - look at the controls and get the one that feels and appeals to you the best. You'll be happy with either.

I've been thinking about the Canon Rebel XT too, since I have a Rebel film camera and a few lenses that should work with the Rebel XT. Most of the packages with the XT come with a lens, so I may look around for body-only package (if there's one available).

no canon dlsr cameras have movie mode. also, if it matters, you can't take pictures by looking at the lcd screen. you have to look through the viewfinder. but that's how you're suppose to take pictures anyway. :D

Here's an example of what a polarized lens can do. If you get the right lighting, you can actually see inside the vehicle.

if you feel like waiting till next month, canon is coming out with a new rebel xti. that should drop the prices on the current rebel xt model too.

Okay, I sold my Canon G6 w/Wide lens through ebay. So the wife can't get too mad about the $819 price tag.

I finally got the XTi. Since you know all of the good stuff, I'll just post the odd things that I'm experiencing.

Left eye strain - As 5Gs pointed out earlier, you need to look through the viewfinder to compose your shot. The LCD won't show it. I'm not used to it, so my left eyelid is getting a workout. I'll get used to it and quit whining eventually.

Underexposure - I'm experiencing some underexposed shots. Others at dpreview are saying the same thing. Great. Another 70mph issue... :) I'll learn how to compensate for it.

Multiple shots - You can take 3 shots per second, but not for long. The buffer will eventually get full. The older model just slowed you down, but this model stops taking shots! It starts again, but is unpredictable. If the buffer overflow :) doesn't get you, the flash protection will. The flash will go ito protect mode if it gets too hot.

I'm going on a big boat to Catalina and Ensenada. Hopefully, I'll have some good pictures to share.

try shooting with both eyes open. if you're right-eye dominant, you may be able to focus only on what's coming in through your right eye.

You have to use the "img" element with the "src" attribute equal to the URL. :D (see source text)

But the site software seems to be re-parsing the HTML into special characters. :8: It has worked for me before. Some forums don't allow certain options (like embeded HTML or object links to another domain.)

A. None of the Digital SLR allow you to use the LCD screen to view before the shot (think Olypus may have something but they would be the exception)

B. Don't know why but seems most DSLRs either under of overexpose slightly.

C. Glad you mentioned the flash thing, didn't know that happened. Wonder if that is common to most DSLRs?

Tell me about the D80. I have agonized between the Canon XT and the Nikon D70S but now its between the XTI and the Nikon D80. The Canon grip is too small to my taste. I like the dust removal system of the XTI but I like the D80 overall (at least on paper from what I read). Tell me about your D80 experience please.

Great info. I shoot mostly with my trusty Canon G5, and have too contemplated upgrading to a DSLR, but have yet to pull the trigger. I had borrowed a friend's Canon 20D to use for a shoot for a friend's Mustang, and going from a P&S to a DSLR takes some getting used to. I too noticed some underexposure, but it's nothing that you can't quickly adjust on the camera.

While I have no doubt that a DSLR is awesome and has far more potential than a P&S (the shutter lag sometimes kills me!), when it comes time I think I will keep my G5 and add to the stable. Reason being that the G5's swivel LCD screen proves to be extremely helpful when shooting stills like cars from an extremely low angle/ground level (I can't contort myself all the way down looking through the viewfinder on a DSLR), as well as rolling shots with my camera mounted on the car shooting the moving subject.

Can't wait to see the Catalina/Ensenada pics!

Okay, there is so much to learn when going from a P&S to a DSLR. For example, exposure can be compensated by Automatic Exposure Balance, Flash Exposure Compensation, ISO sensitivity, etc. There is so much control over this thing, and the performance you get depends on your knowledge. But the tool is there, its up to you. I love this thing!

I have one of the Digital Rebels, early version and haven't pulled my 35mm camera body out since.

Best lens I've bought for it was the 70-300 IS canon lens. I think I'm also going to get Canon's 28-135 IS lens when I have the cash.

I tend to take most pictures of my kids sports. The 28-135 will be great for soccer, I'm found the 70-300 great for baseball.

I can easily take 300 pictures during a single game, using medium plus fine resolution. Medium to shrink the picture size and improve fps.
OB3
I have been up in the air lately about the camera too.
After getting the 40 '' LCD out of the way, i need to make a decision on the camera soon before Xmas.

Fuji s9000, close to a DSLR, but not quite there... Have read some good reviews. I love my Fuji z6900 now.
LChisum
My new DSC-W200 will not briefly display the image just recorded (auto review) on the LCD screen if the screen display is turned off. Is this normal for Cybershots or this model? It will display the recorded image for 2 seconds if the display is on. I have checked the menu settings multiple times, and auto review is turned ON. I ask because all other manufacturer's cameras I have used will briefly display the recorded image even with the screen turned off. The manual is unclear, and Sony's website chat and email help desk didn't know the answer.
Thanks,

Larry

Well for all my agonizing in earlier threads, I made some career decisions reecently and one of them is to try an go semi-pro. (Pro pays the rent, semi-pro helps pay the rent.)

I think it was somebody here that sent me a email telling me about nikonians.org. Great place for nikon people.

I bought a Nikon D300 (with only 5000 slicks on the shutter), a 18-55,, f/2.8 lens, 80-200 f/2.8 lens, flash, and a tripod and ball head. Did bankrupt the bank but wife said go for it. Want to do some low key informal weddings to start with and build from there. Right now going through a learning curve for about a month or so.

For those considering a little less pro camera setup, I would recommend either a Canon XSi or a Nikon D60 with either 18-200 VR lens or a 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR lens pair.
OB3
I have been flip flopping between a d300 or a d200 for some time now.... I can get a <5000 act d200 for about 1/2 of a slightly used d300 lately on the forums...
So confusing, im sure once i buy it teh d3oox illcome out lol

Best of Luck on your new venture !!
