Breaks??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Ok I was reading and article here that says that back brakes last about 60k miles......About 2 months ago I took my 2005 Pilot with about 28k miles on it to get serviced and the tech guy told me to replace all 4 brakes since all 4 where bad......Was this ok for me to have this service performed? Or where they just trying to get some $$......On another note When I drive my car now and say I am over 45 MPH and I suddenly need to stop My car will shake and the brake pedal feels very soft and vibrates (almost as if I am driving over a koble stone paved street) Did they not do the service right? did they forget to add Brake fluid?
I hate to take it in with out first hearing from you guys. Thanks.

You should not have needed brakes at 28K unless you do something extreme like towing. You likely have warped front brake rotors now. Did they turn your rotors at that time? If they did, that makes them thinner and more prone to warpage. They could have also overtorqued your wheels causing the rotor warpage. Given the low mileage, you probably should have had a second shop look at it for verification if you thought the brakes could be bad. Was the brake vibration there right after the brake job or is it now just appearing after 2 months? If it was there right after the service just take it back and demand that they fix it correctly (replace the warped rotors).

28K is very low for brakes on any vehicle. Are you one of those drivers that drives an automatic with two feet (i.e. one on the brake and the other on the gas)? If not, you definitely should not have needed brakes - even if you did, it's rare that a vehicle needs ALL 4 brakes replaced. Usually these are done in pairs. Sounds like they took you for a ride. Furthermore, it sounds like they didn't properly bleed the system like they are supposed to and now you have air in your lines (this is why the pedal feels mushy). The brakes pulsate because they didn't use a torque wrench on your lugs or the correct pattern to tighten them, in doing so, they've likely warped the rotors.

Did they even give you a measurment on the pads?

Was this an independent shop or a dealer?

Last winter when I took my Pilot in for its 60k mile service they told me the brakes were down to about 5% and needed to be replaced (the fronts have already been done once). Due to the common warping of Honda rotors, I had always been planning to do the next brake job myself with aftermarket parts. So I bought everything I'd need and settled in to do the job, and when I took the wheel off I saw that the pads were nowhere near needing to be replaced!

I put the wheel right back on and told my wife (who usually drives the Pilot) to let me know when they started squeeling or acting strange at all. It's now 7 months and 10,000 miles later, and the parts are still sitting in my garage, waiting to be needed.

I should add that this dealer has provided exceptional service in the past, prompting me to recommend them here multiple times. When the rotors warped at 22k, they turned them, and when I wasn't happy with the result they replaced them - all free of charge with no argument. I guess even the best dealer can slip into dishonesty or incompetence occasionally.
