2003 Pilot LX fuel milage, help. - Click HERE for Original Thread
Sneakyracer
Hi, I am the original owner of a 2003 Pilot LX. It has just a tad over 44,000 miles. It has been well mantained and ive enjoyed it a lot. Lately, due o increasing gas prices ive been more vigilant on fuel milage and so far Im getting a touch under 15mpg. I drive mostly in the city, 20-40mph and some stretches of highway (60-65mph), the area is mildly hilly but mostly coastal plains. I do check the tire pressures regularly and generally have that at 33 psi.

No matter what I do I basically get 14.5 mpg +- .1 .

I dont floor it often and always have it in drive. I basically drive by myself 90% of the time with minimal load, basically nothing in the car. I do have to use the AC 90% of the time.

Last tank I did more highway driving than usual but basically got the same milage.

What do you want help with?

1) Put the tire air pressure up higher
2) shut off the AC
3) drive like your brakes don't work
4) Don't warm up or idle the car more than absolutely necessary

My 03 Pilot gets the same mileage your talking about. Thats just the way it is.

So is this a statement or is there a question in there somewhere?

Ok, I though there was something wrong with my Pilot! Since the specs say one thing:

Fuel
Fuel Tank Capacity: 19.2 gal.
EPA Mileage Estimates: (City/Highway)
Automatic: : 17 mpg / 22 mpg
Range in Miles: (City/Highway)
Automatic: 326.4 mi. / 422.4 mi.

And I have never seen anything close to 22mpg. Today I drove 200 highway miles with no AC and used the cruise control at 60-70mph. Light traffic. I might get 17-18mpg out of this tank, maybe. Highest ive ever seen basically.

I appreciate your concerns, no, I was not taken hostage, I have a nice piece of plastic and steel on my hip that holds 17 shiny pieces of brass and lead to keep me company on long drives:D :1:

i noticed you're from PR. Do you have addatives in your gas that would lower your mpg?

Does everyone get worse gas milage compared to the sticker?

Good luck.

I'm in the same boat. About 15 mpg overall. Wtih most vehicles, I get around the city EPA rating, maybe 1-2 mpg higher. The Pilot is the first car I've ever owned that had done worse in my everyday driving than the city EPA rating. Not pleased.

Yep, i mean Honda has a good reputation for producing vehicles with excellent fuel milage. I mean I now seriously question the EPA ratings. I tried to get the highest milage posible, no ac, cruise control, light highway traffic etc etc no way near the 22mpg highway rating. So, to me its a bogus rating. But basically Im getting the milage of a GM V8 truck that weights 5400lbs in a v6 4400 lb suv.

Do you know how the EPA comes up with the city and highway mileage ratings? See here: http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/420f05045.htm

The highway 'test' is absolutely bogus.

quote:
How are Vehicles Tested?
Vehicles are driven over identical driving patterns by professional drivers in controlled laboratory conditions on a dynamometer, which is like a treadmill for cars. The conditions that occur during driving, such as wind drag and inertia are accounted for on the dynamometer. There are two types of tests that are conducted: city and highway tests.

The city test is approximately 11 miles long and simulates a stop and go trip with an average speed of about 20 miles per hour (mph). The trip lasts 31 minutes and has 23 stops. About 18 percent of the time is spent idling (as in waiting for traffic lights). A short freeway driving segment is included in the test. The engine is initially started after being parked overnight.

The highway test simulates a 10 mile trip with an average speed of 48 mph. The vehicle is started "hot" and there is very little idling and no stops.

Who drives on the highway at 48 miles per hour anymore?

My 2003 averages from 15 MPG up to 24 MPG. I normally get 18 to 19 MPG for regular day to day driving. 15 MPG when I am pulling my 5 by 10 landscape trailer and up to 24 MPG on long distance trips.
