Hey!
I only started giving definitions because so many of the arguments were based on semantics, if not misuse! :4: :4: :4: |

Semantics (Greek semantikos, giving signs, significant, symptomatic, from sema, sign) refers to the aspects of meaning that are expressed in a language, code, or other form of representation. Semantics is contrasted with two other aspects of meaningful expression, namely, syntax, the construction of complex signs from simpler signs, and pragmatics, the practical use of signs by agents or communities of interpretation in particular circumstances and contexts. By the usual convention that calls a study or a theory by the name of its subject matter, semantics may also denote the theoretical study of meaning in systems of signs.
Though terminology varies, writers on the subject of meaning generally recognize two sorts of meaning that a significant expression may have: (1) the relation that a sign has to objects and objective situations, actual or possible, and (2) the relation that a sign has to other signs, most especially the sorts of mental signs that are conceived of as concepts.
Most theorists refer to the relation between a sign and its objects, as always including any manner of objective reference, as its denotation. Some theorists refer to the relation between a sign and the signs that serve in its practical interpretation as its connotation, but there are many more differences of opinion and distinctions of theory that are made in this case. Many theorists, especially in the formal semantic, pragmatic, and semiotic traditions, restrict the application of semantics to the denotative aspect, using other terms or altogether ignoring the connotative aspect.

I usually use OneLook.com.
1) It is short and to the point
2) it's not open to editing like Wiki

Can anyone remember the title and who started the thread that is missing?
The thread starter, a moderator or the admin are the only ones who could have deleted it.
I would think an admin or moderator would have said something, and a database error usually leave errors all over not just in one thread. |

Wow, maybe more than one thread was deleted. All I remember was that N_Jay admitted to maybe erring on the side of being too sarcastic and expressed a great love for the quotes of Oscar Wilde. |

Threads cannot be deleted on the board by nither by mods. Nor the starter. When we "delete" thread we just move it to a forum that is not visible.
To me this seems like a database issue. Need to ping admin to find out |

LOL, or my "Err on the side of being too sarcastic" was just a sarcastic statement.;) ;) (Just kidding)
But, it was not the fact it was an Oscar Wilde quote (or attributed to him), it was the line itself I liked.
I don't look at post counts and generally only use the "New Post" search so I really don't know how many are gone. |

So what happens to a post where the originator deletes it?
-----------------------
To delete this post, check the box to the left and then click the button to the right.
Note: deleting this post will result in the deletion of the entire thread if this post is the first post in the thread.

Ah - you sure? IIRC, if the first post of a thread is deleted by the author, the mods or Admin - the thread is also deleted. For this reason, we typically move the thread to "Delete Me" - just in case. |

I've seen cases where the original poster deleted that post, and poof, the thread was gone. But, I also was surprised the rami was announcing N_Jay as hitting 8000, since he was still 300 back a day or so earlier?
I must admit, though, I gave up on reading some of the threads; I already know what the definition of "is" is.;) |

Not "if", but rather "if not"!;) ;)
Well if the originator of the thread deleted it and did not say I word about it, I would think that is rather rude. |

If not for that comment, I would tend to think you might be trying to be conciliatory, N_Jay. And please stop winking at me, jdeanksi might get jealous. :7: |

Lucky you (I hope). I would love to spend my days driving an S2k or a little motor scooter! Instead I be goin' to work tomorrow to crank up the money machine to pay for our new furnace, roof, well pump, washer, dryer, soon dishwasher, etc ...
Best of luck to you and the Mrs! And don't forget that I owe you a steak dinner and beer if you ever make it back to Eastern Pennsylvania. :7: |

One thread wouldn't explain a 200+ post difference. Even for "10 posts in a row N_Jay.":p |

Very true.
So when that the "Great and Powerful Mods" going to get us an answer?
Are they in the database and the links are gone, or are the lost like the lost tribes? |

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"
My 4-year-old and I have just finished reading The Wizard of Oz, great book by the way, very different from the movie. The winged monkeys are not scary when you know their history. |

Took the Family to Wicked on Thursday eve.
It was the Daughters 16th B-Day and she is a little bit into theater. |

| Since we have wandered/drifted just a bit  I am planning to take my wife, 18 yr old son and 24 yr old daughter to the NC Symphony for "A Celtic evening" on the Friday after Thanksgiving. (Took my daughter to Handel's Messiah Ballet last year but we both came out realizing ballet is not our main attraction.) |

Recommended for ages 8 & up (some parts may be scary and/or long for young children). Please, no children under 4.

Even is they would enjoy it, they would not understand nor appreciate it.
At Broadway show prices, I would take them to 15 or 20 Disney movies instead. |

I don't really care about the post count. I never even look at it.
My shortcut to the site is the "new Posts link.
I am not even the person (post count whore) that noticed the lowered post count. (LOL, Just kidding ramirami)
My first hint was a few searches that come back empty. |
