Wireless home networking question?? - Click HERE for Original Thread
OB3
I purchased my wife a wireless gateway laptop for Xmas this year, and I set up the wireless network this weekend for us. I have all the conections set up properly, I am actually posting this thread wirelessly right now, however it is un-secure at the moment.
I am trying to set up the wireless protection to password protect the network so my neighbors are not able to access it, but it is asking me for my router name and password?

Does anyone know where i can find the username and password for the router ??

Any assistance is appreciated , thanks

You might try "admin" in the user name, and leave the password blank.

what brand router?

try admin as the username and password as the default password (that is standard for netgear). Just google your router brand along with the phrase "default password" if it is another brand. I can login to two of my neighbors routers because they never changed the default passwords. That means I could lock them out of their own router by changing their passwords (not that I would).

Did you check either the manual for the router or the on-line help for the router? Many times they have a master reset button if you do not remember the name/password settings.

Everytime I've added something to my network (linksys) I've ended up called them (o r rather someone in India) and helped through the problem

I'm located at least 100 yards from the next nearest house and haven't bothered with the security settings

If it is Linksys, try leaving the username blank and admin for the password

If it's a Netgear, I believe the default is:
Username: Admin
Password: Password

That's if you didn't set one up in the first place, but I assume you hadn't since you are asking.

Good luck.

What brand, what model?
Did you set anything up out of the box, or should it still be the default?
Did anyone help you set it up?

You can always try a hard reset - usually a small button on the bottom or back of the router and then check here for default passwords:

did you try the PN# SKU# that is in your wireless router?

Whatever make and model you have, it is almost certainly browser configurable ( http://192.168.1.1/ ) and the default login is in the User's Guide.

Read it.
