It beat the pilot and it's not even for sale yet. Check motor trend .com for more info.

I don't know anything more about the XC90 other that what I've been reading for the last year, but from the sounds of what Volvo has put together - they've got a winner and it probably deserves the SUV OTY award from MotorTrend.

Let's break down some facts though. If you want an XC90 - the vehicle in base form does not have the same power (208hp-XC90) that the PILOT has (240hp). The XC90, with the smaller engine is still gonna cost 35k and that doesn't include a third row seat - ADVANTAGE PILOT!

If you want more power out of your XC90, you have to upgrade to the T-5 package which is rated at 268hp. The PILOT-240hp. But, the major difference here is, you can get a fully loaded PILOT, with comparable option for around 35k - to get a fully loaded XC90, published reports put the price around 44k. Once again - ADVANTAGE PILOT.

The PILOT is built by Honda, Volvo is owned by Ford Motor Company and I don't need to go into the level of "crap" the Ford builds. Yes, Volvo's product is still of higher quality than Ford is, but when you have ownership willing to scimp in one area - it will happen in others. Honda has a huge reputation of building reliable vehicles, so once again - ADVANTAGE PILOT!

The XC90 does have a lot of cool safety technology - but Volvo is famous for that. ADVANTAGE VOLVO.

Is it fair to compare the PILOT with Luxury SUV's like the XC90, BMW X5 and MB ML430???? I dunno. But, I would put money down that 15-years from now (with regular maintenance) that my PILOT will still be on the road and running great!

I agree with this: this is a tradeoff of ultimate high-safety engineering (which I love) and basic reliability. In our little neighborhood we have had 6 Volvos (including our own) replaced in the past 2 years, not ONE with another Volvo. The owners were unanimously upset about the reliability. I've reported this on other strings, but ours had, on average, a problem every 2500 miles. That's not just Ford "crap", that's 70's level Ford crap! This car was only 5 years old and had only 50,000 miles when I traded it in, but it got to the point where I was dreading driving it because I feared finding some new problem.

I love the idea of the XC90, though I like the bigger dimensions of the Pilot more. I read that the XC90 even has specially stamped roof pillar corners, made of some special metal compound (can't remember what) that would withstand the crushing forces of a rollover. To test it they built a catapult type device that would throw the vehicle on its back. Great stuff, and kudos to Volvo for putting in this kind of effort. I just wish they'd put some of that effort into making the basic stuff work right, too! I'm usually a safety-first kinda guy where the family vehicle is concerned, but I couldn't bring myself to spend another nickel on Volvo. Given the Pilot's recent 5-star safety rating, I'm happy with my choice.

Keep in mind -- the top of the line twin turbo comes with 4 gear
automatic, and thye 5 gear transmission is only available on the
low end engine. I've read an independent review of the Volvo
by a foreight trade magazine, and they were not impressed.
I will look it up and post some facts when I get a chance.

I'll take Consumers Reports over Motor Trend, thanks.

Unprejudiced
My next door neighbor in the office had a Volvo and had tons of problems with it. It was only 4 years old. She finally sold it and she was so happy. Her replacement was a nifty Mazda hatchback: she is against the idea of an SUV. About safety. We know the Pilot has scored 5 stars. I may be wrong, but isn't that the most a car can score?
