Here's what mine were, after I drove the Pilot:
1. Honda Pilot
2. Toyota Highlander
3. Nissan Pathfinder
I didn't get hooked on the Pilot until my second drive......:27: |

1. Pilot - since I can't affod the MDX
2. Pathfinder - heard great things from Nissan owners
3. Highlander - haven't heard anything from anyone. |

5: Expedition - only because I already oned one, thought the new one would be better
4: Explorer - The redesign is much better than previous generation
3: Envoy - nice truck, great engine, not enough room
2: Sequoia - loved everything about except the price tag
1: PILOT - quality, reliability, space, power and function - it was an easy decision.
I LOVE MY PILOT!

3)Moutaineer. I was $300 away from closing the deal. Needless to say the dealer called me back a couple of days later, but I had already discovered the MDX and was no longer interested in the Mountaineer. Whew, that was close... What was I thinking:8: ??? BTW the Mercury dealership offered me over 2k for my Villager on trade, the Honda dealership offered $200.00.
I never considered 5 seaters or the GM and Dodge products. |

Wanted a 7+ passenger 4WD, so:
3. Trailblazer
2. Explorer

I liked the Pilot (and Honda quality) best, and even at MSRP it was cheaper than the X Plan prices (business partner pricing - not as good as employee pricing, but often at or below "invoice" price) on the others. |

Before test drives and comparisons:
1. Lexus RX-300
2. Acura MDX
3. Toyota Sequoia
4. Toyota 4 Runner
5. Toyota Highlander
6. Nissan Pathfinder
I had not heard of the Pilot when I first started my search.
After comparisons:
1. Honda Pilot - Hands down, the all-around winner in my book
2. Lexus RX-300 - Too expensive, but a very close second
3. Toyota Sequoia - Too big, poor fuel economy. With a good 6 cyl, this would have been a contender.
4. Acura MDX - Too expensive, not too crazy about it's looks. Even if it were priced the same as the Pilot, I would still buy the Pilot. One of my primary goals in replacing my V8 JGC was to reduce my fuel costs. The MDX requires Premium and that wa a major deterence.
5. Nissan Pathfinder - I can't remember exactly what we thought about the Pathfinder, only that we ruled it out. I think it was my wife that put the nail in this one. But obviously I wasn't too impressed with it either or I would have remembered more about it. I do remember enough to know that it ranked higher than the other two Toyota SUVs when we had finished our testing.
6. Toyota 4 Runner - Felt small and cramped, sort of expensive, exterior needed updated (this was before the 2003 were out), ride was the worst of the bunch. Would have been my choice if I was going for serious off-roading, but not for street driving.
7. Toyota Highlander - About the only thing I liked was its looks. |
|
|
| Commuter |
1. Honda Pilot
2. Trailblazer/Envoy 7 seater
3. Explorer 7 seater
4. Durango
5. Dodge Caravan AWD
6. Honda Odessey
The Pilot was my only choice but I had to go through the pros and cons of the other vehicles as any good consumer would (eg: my wife said I shouldn't make a rash decision).
As you can see, seating was a priority as well as some sort of 4 wheel drive. The Honda Odessey was thrown in for comparison/price purposes but I was tired of vans (Pilot will replace my 96 Caravan). |

Adding to my top 3:
From my top 3 you'll note that the Cooper S was on my final list. I'm probably in the minority here, but I was actually shopping a pretty wide range of vehicle styles. I picked each based on different characteristics. Adding to the list that I seriously looked into and drove were:
Volkswagen Passat
Audi A4
Audi TT
Toyota Sequoia
Lexus IS 300
Lexus RX 300
Ultimately the Volkwagen and Audi's proved to have too many quirks for vehicles of their price, the Sequoia was too large (can you say parrallel docking?), and the Lexus vehicles were to "plush" for my practical lifestyle.

1. 2003 Subaru Outback
- Way too underpowered and stupid little quirks. For instance, the seatbacks split 60/40, but the seats themselves split all or nothing. When the salesman showed that too me, I turned to him and remarked, "that's pretty stupid, isn't it?" To get the V6 engine, you're pricewise in Pilot territory. I do, however, think that Subaru's AWD system is superior.
2. 2002 Olds Bravada
- Never drove it, never looked at one. My father-in-law works for a GM supplier and gets GM cars at a special discount. This is an expensive (and loaded) truck, according to the website, but I couldn't see my way to paying that much for a GM car of any sort.
3. 2003 Toyota RAV4
- I had driven one a few years back and didn't like the excessive body roll on Boston's Storrow Drive's reverse curves. It, too, has a proactive AWD system with available LSD. The problem is that it's $19,000 list, but just about everything is optional through the "L" or "quick order" package. I mean, A/C as an option? Come on!
I test drove the Pilot twice at different dealerships and loved how much room it had and the great ride quality. Plus - it's a Honda.
It did take some reading up on its AWD system to be completely convinced. I remember a lot of comparo-tests being done between the RAV4 Mk1 and the CR-V Mk1, and everyone remarked that the CR-V's Real-Time 4WD was far inferior to the RAV's system. That's the chief reason we ignored the CR-V during this search. |

Nissan was too cramped, but boy was it fast. Didn't handle as nice as the Pilot though.
4Runner was comfrotable but slow, handled really nice, didn't have as much room as I wanted though (I did like the fact that all the 4Runners at the dealer had trailer hitches though)
Pilot was the best riding, most comfrotable one of them all. It was as fast as the Nissan, had more room than any I looked at (in this class) AND had 4 wheel drive at about the same price.:2: |

| DaCarMan |
Mine were:
5- Montero Limited- Bad resale value, not good on gas, good on looks(IMO) and interior was nice.
4- Toyota Sequoya- They wanted 37k for a limited, way too small,
excellent ride, good resale value.
3- Toyota 4runner (2003)- Not sure about styling, gas mileage a bit low, nice interior, very very fast!!!
2- Pilot- incredible price, unmatched space, not too fond of styling but can be lived whith...see below
My #1 choice was the Acura MDX but I just could not quite afford the 39k for the touring model, so the best compromise was the Pilot and a really good one at that. |

2) Volvo XC90 (Pros: Safety, quality, Dealer Service. Cons: $$, Couldn't even test drive one til 3 days ago since a late 2003 model)
3) Acura MDX (Pros: Safety, luxury, Seating for 7. Cons: $$, snooty dealears)
4) Honda Pilot - Since Honda's so tight lipped with Marketing, I didn't even hear about this model until the day before I was going to the Volvo dealer to put a deposit on the XC90 (they'd already pre-sold 18 of their 33 allocated back in July 02). Finally found a dealer a couple of days later that had a Pilot to test drive. My wife and I liked it so much, we put our deposit down and ordered for November delivery. Best decisionwe ever almost didn't make!;) |

Pilot
Highlander
MDX
Chose the Pilot over the Highlander because it was slightly bigger, had more towing capacity, and just looked better to me. Ride was a little better, power a little better.
Liked the MDX, but I wanted more of an SUV and less of a luxury sedan. I will be hauling stuff and towing a small boat, so it seemed more appropriate. And, the cheaper (but still not cheap!) price made it the logical choice between these two. Also, the fake MDX wood didn't thrill me, but I would have liked a moonroof. I may spring for an aftermarket someday.

We really started out expecting to buy a Toyota.
We drove:
4-runner
Land cruiser
XTerra
Highlander
As far as overall, we liked Highlander and Pilot the best. We kind of expected to buy the Highlander until we went back for our second Pilot test drive. That sealed us!
Pilot just is more car for the money than a Highlander. More space, more little extras like rear a/c control, more cupholders, and MUCH MUCH more space. Way more car for the $$$.

2. Toyota 4 Runner
3. Honda Odyssey
4. Acura MDX
I felt, looking at the numbers (engine specs and passenger capacity), the Pilot was better than the Highlander.
From a numbers perspective, the 4 Runner looked better than the Pilot but was about $4000 more.
The Odyssey was my original choice. However, after test driving it, I thought it felt like just another van. The Pilot, on the other hand, handled much better than the Odyssey and felt safer. I thought, for a couple thousand more, why not get something you really want. |

Here is my list:
1: Pilot (I bought it)
2: Mini Cooper ( I ordered and canceled it due to financial status changed)
3/4 tie: Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute
5: Saturn Vue
6: Jeep Liberty
You may notice that I was acturally focus on compact SUV at begining. Since I cancel the Mini, I can move up a little bit to the best deal of the middle size, if not a full size by some means.

Honestly I was torn between different types of vehicles. I had a Volvo C70 and loved the performance and solidity plus the luxury aspect. I also have an old Jeep Cherokee that I used as a work vehicle, but it was unreliable, uncomfortable and too small.
So in trying to narrow down my wants, I looked at sporty cars:
Mini Cooper S (dealer gouging)
Infiniti G35 Coupe (the closest to my Volvo but wasn't out yet)
Audi A4
Acura RSX
Then I looked at SUVs:
Highlander (liked everything but the $ and glittery wood)
Pilot
Nissan Murano (wasn't available yet)
Hyundai Santa Fe
Kia Sorento
CRV
Then I checked wagons:
A4 Avant
Passat
I liked the A4 Avant better than the Passat and liked it more than the A4 sedan. It also beat out the Acura RSX.
So car wise, it was the G35 Coupe and the A4 Avant.
The Pilot definately beat out the Highlander. The Kia wasn't available yet and I didn't need to go cheap, so the CRV (which I dislike) and the Hyundai were out.
So it was down to the Pilot and Murano.
Since I couldn't wait for the G35 or the Murano, the A4 Avant and the Pilot were it.
The A4 looked better, drove better, better fuel economy and more luxurious. However, I would only get it as a stick shift and was alittle tired of shifting + resale is less for a stick. Audi's reliability isn't Honda's. I would also feel the need to baby it more than the Pilot. The Audi was the emotional tug.
The Pilot drove well, was big, is a Honda, priced the same as the Audi and wasn't ugly. I would actually take it off-road and felt it was less of a source of worry as far as potholes, dents, scrapes and wear and tear were concerned.
Basically it was style versus utility.
I stopped by the Honda dealership and saw their first Sagebrush. Loved the color and decided to just go for it.
Everytime i load it up with people or things....take it of road, i feel like it was a great decision.
The G35 Coupe is FANTASTIC, but even smaller than my Volvo.
I'm sorta hoping I won't like the Murano....just so I won't regret not waiting. I'm already concerned that I may love the Element.
If the Pilot didn't have the scrunch, I'd love it more.

Top 3:
3) Acura MDX- too pricey
2) Volvo XC90-again, too pricey and smaller 3rd row than mdx or pilot
#1) PILOT- Hands down- bang for buck, build, quality, and although it lacks butt warmers and moonroof, got em aftermarket and they look factory installed and work great!!!! saved 6K from comparable outfitted MDX and 7K from XC90- which means I have $ for Christmas! |

Formerly leased a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo but I would never consider that vehicle again. Although it had some features I liked such as pretty good trip computer, auto door lock at 15 mph, and good window locks (where I can control all window locks from the driver's door), it lost the tranny at 12,000 miles (under warranty thank god) after I took it in to the dealer 3 times complaining and they couldn't identify or fix the problem.
Ultimately Honda reputation for quality, 3rd row seats, and getting a brand new model made up my mind on the Pilot.

| Top Dog - where did you get the sunroof and heated seats? Does the sunroof sound and work well? My fear is that when we put an aftermarket sunroof it will whistle like hell. What kind did you buy? |
|
|
| Tom |
1. Jeep Grand Cherokee Leather- loved the heated seats, but the car felt a bit crowded inside, Jeep reliability is a big question mark, and the leather seats in Jeep that are NOT the Limited Edition are shaped so that they sort of pinch you into the seat and it gets uncomfortable after a while.
2. Lexus RX 300 - for the price of a used one, I bought a new Pilot. It had a wonderful ride, but no 3rd seat and the passenger seat was a bit uncomfortable in that it seemed to slant slightly forward and did not hold my butt in the rear of the seat. I would not want to sit in it for a 12 hour drive. I've noticed this in more than one RX 300, so for me, it is a design flaw. Also, the passenger seat does not have power controls to adjust that sensation. Plus the RX300 does not have decent map lights for a car of that "luxury" class.
3. Volvo XC70 - useless 3rd seat, Volvo reliability kept being mentioned on many web sites (headlight bulbs always burning out, etc) and the high cost of maintenance. But I liked the ride and the MPG and the non-SUV posture.
Also looked at the Ford Explorer, Audi A6 Avant, VW Passat Wagon, Mazda Tribute (my favorite mini-SUV), Subaru Outback Wagon, Mercury Mountaineer, MDX (my shin bone was always hitting the glove box in the passenger seat), Highlander (didn't like the interior nor the non-3rd seat), Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, and various minivans.
It was amazing, because the first car we looked at was the Pilot, but it felt big and we weren't sure we wanted another SUV. Two months later, after looking at just about everything else available and spending days on the web researching and in the library reading, on a whim we decided to go see the Pilot again. And only then did we finally realize that this was the car that had every other car beat in all the important stuff - reliability, utility,
price for value, nice ride, and decent enough looking though maybe not a classic look. We are overall very happy. I learned that every car is a compromise in some regard. The Pilot was less of a compromise than all the rest. |

I was saying that the heated seats and sunroof were lacking in the Pilot. That, and the test drive, helped sway me toward the MDX from the Pilot. BTW, some aftermarket sunroofs are installed and are every bit as good as a factory installed one. It really depends upon the installer and the quality of the sunroof that you purchase.

What warranty??? The dealer/manufacturer can only deny a warranty claim IF what you did aftermarket caused that particular problem in question to fail. Safety cage? I doubt it. I think the Honda is at least as stiff as the MDX, which comes standard with a sunroof. Honda is just slow to release models with it. The Pilot, I believe, will come with an available sunroof within the next 2 years.

Because of the price, we too, are looking at all of our alternatives. My biggest fear is a war that drives up fuel prices. I will have a 120 mile (round trip) commute in another month or so. On the DC areas congested roads, I need something that is good on fuel. We're going to wait until our MDX arrives and take a look at all of our options.
