We have a 2004 EXL with about 18000 miles. I recently noticed the rear rotors have about 1/2 to 1 inch of rust on them at the outer edge of the rotor. The brake pad wear doesn't appear to be hitting that far out to the edge. In other words, the shiny silver wear pattern does not go all the way to the edge of the rotor like the front does. I had a similar issue with a GMC pickup where the rotors were rusting from the inside out after 3 yrs. As the miles tell, we don't use the car alot and could that be causing the rotors to rust like this and reduce braking efficiency?

The rusty areas are were the pads don't touch, therefore, the rust should have no affect on braking. However, 1/2 to 1 inch seems like too large of a section for the pads not to be using.
The rear disks on my 06 have a 1-3/4" face and almost the entire face is polished (used by the pads). Wereas the front disks have a 2-3/4" face and the inner half inch is not touched by the pads (rusty).
I wonder if they changed the brake design between 04 and 06? |
