No rear heater fan? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've had my 2006 Pilot LX for a few months now and ever since the winter started, I've had questions about how the rear passenger heater works.

It seems that when I switch the rear heater to any heating position, there is no air that comes out of the rear center console top vents. There seems to be a little bit of hot air coming out at the bottom of the console, but nothing up top. Is this normal?

When I turn on the cold air position, the fan comes on strong and cold air blows out the vent.

I have the LX Pilot that has the manual climate control knob on the rear console, but I assume it works the same on the automatic LX version as well.

Also, the rear windows seem to fog up really easy on cold days. I'm thinking this may be related to the lack of rear hot air.

Since hot air rises, I then thought maybe it's normal for the air to come out the bottom rather than the top vents. Still, it seems like there is not much hot air circulatiuon for the rear passengers.

Any ideas?

try selecting the top vents only mode on the control up front. air should flow through the top vents of the rear console. this was the only way i found to get warm air through the top of the rear console. as for the fogging windows, i use the fresh-air option combined with the defrost/lower vent modes to keep them clear. hope that helped!

So having an '04 EX for a couple of years, I got used to the front controlling the rear heat/ac controls. Then when I added an '06 LX to the stable last year, I found out what "manual intervention" meant. First, the ONLY thing that the front controls is whether the rear a/c is working or not. When the front button is on, the rear will blow cold/conditioned air. When the front button is off, the rear just blows air.

Now, the knob on the rear unit controls the position and temp of the air. The blue positions to the left control the upper air flow with no temperature control - cold air, either just moving around or air conditioned. The red positions to the right control the lower air flow with heated air through the lower vents ONLY. The airflow thru the upper vents is stronger than the flow through the lower vents. You have no control beyond what I've explained here - just fan speed and flow outlet - upper cool, lower heat.

As far as rear windows being fogging, make sure you're not running your front with recirc on. In both of my Pilots the rear windows stay really clear unless you've got a bunch of wet people sitting back there - then you get some residual fogging from those folks. :D

Don't feel bad, I only discovered on another thread, that the Pilot has hvac ductwork under the carpet to the rear seats.

Thought the center console was the only way they got air. Suppose I should discover what setting those under carpet ducts send out air....
