We just purchased a 2007 Pilot and have a bad melted plastic smell coming from the heat/AC vents as well as outside the car after driving. We were told that this is normal on new vehicles and it will go away.
However, the odor is not going away and I am concerned it is dangerous to breathe.
Anyone else have this problem or advice? |

Haven't heard it described that way before, but it might just be the "new car smell".
If you are concerned, be sure you don't use the "recirc" mode on the climate control and you could open the windows for a short while at the beginning of each drive. Any fume build up should dissipate/dilute quickly. |

Had to same problem with my 06 pilot.
Smell plastic odor went away in a month. New chemicals mixing in i'm told. |

| How many miles do you have on the Pilot? It's usually the smell from the chemical they spray on the undercarrage which usually gets on the exhaust system, which will burn off with time. Just park it outside after running. It will go away. |

I had something similar happen with a new 2006 Accord. There was this wicked, toxic stink coming from the vents. When the car was hot, you could get out and smell it coming from under the cowling...it was real bad.
I stopped driving the car when I started having pains when breathing (this is no joke). My doctor put me on the inhaler asthmatics use and that helped.
It smelled like burning plastic and if you put your nose up to the intake under the driver's wiper, you could tell it was obviously coming from there somewhere. I rented a car and, as soon as I got the title, I just traded it (at a mininmal loss). |

| I thought our pilot was smellier than other new cars we've had. I attribute it to the fact that Pilots drive off the lot faster than other cars |

There is something with the plastic in the 2007 Pilots that Honda puts on the floors and stores the accessories (floor mats, etc) in. I test drove two 2007's the other day. One had been on the lot two days, the other about 10 (being in the market for one, I check frequently, so I know :D ).
I drove the two-day one first. Wicked shimmy, so that was out. I did notice a slight odor in the vehicle which came out of the vents when recirc was on. Having seen something like this before, I pulled over and pulled up the plastic on the driver's floor and smelled it...yep, that was it.
I drove the other one and it drove great...smooth as glass. I was going to go back and talk $$$ on it when the same smell which was much stronger started making me want to puke. It was a horrible stench. This time, when I checked I smelled the seats, headliner, etc...the stink was in everything.
Why? Vehicles baking in the sun getting interior temps over 100 degrees causes this plastic to reek and permeate everything. The one that was on the lot longer smelled worse.
Drove one at another dealership today. With recirc on, there was only a slight presence of the odor.
Interesting to note I'm seeing a mix of Ontario Pilots (w/Bridgestones) and Alabama ones (w/ Goodyears) in the Albany, NY area. The Goodyears seem to be noisier. |
