Trouble Starting? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have an 07 Pilot and every once in a while, it will not start. It will fire, but it won't turn over. If I let it sit, it will start right away. The dealer says they can't find an issue. Anyone have this problem?

Do you mean; "It will turn-over, but it will not fire"?

How long do you let it crank?
discoverygirl42
Yes, it turns over but will not fire. Sorry about that! Sometimes I let it crank for up to 5 seconds, which seems like a long time. When it finally does start, it chugs or sputters, like it would if it wasn't getting fuel. It doesn't display any error messages or signals on the dash, so I'm at a loss. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My wife's '04 Pilot has done this since new - about once a month you get that long crank and then uneven running situation. Unfortunately, it's not reproducible enough for a dealer to do anything about it - and in her case the behavior hasn't changed in 3 years. On my '06 Pilot I haven't had this phenomenon occur......

The hard starting has been thought to be related to changes in temperature, or changes in grade, brand, or "season" of the fuel.

Most seem to think it is a artifact of the lean burn design, that if the engine does not start in the first revolution, it is destined to a long cranking process to get a rich enough mixture to start.

My 03 does this once in a blue moon. After cranking for a few seconds, I'll let it sit for another 10 seconds, and try again. This has always worked in the past.

Thanks so much for all the replies and advice. Too bad Honda can't figure it out, it is the only complaint that I have!

I had the same problem twice when the 03 Pilot was brand new. The dealer reprogram all the keys. Have never had the problem since.

Really? It was just the keys? Did you have trouble every time you started the Pilot or just occasionally? Mine is only occasionally so I never thought about the keys.

Thanks!

Interesting.

I'm not sure about the Pilot; but, for most vehicles, if a starting problem is a key/security issue, you should see something in the display telling you that it failed due to security -- in the case of the Pilot, I think it has a green key symbol that should flash in the dash display.

I know on my Corvette, the "Security" light will flash if it fails to start due to an improper code embedded in the ignition key.

However, if it were a security issue, I would think it woudn't even crank over.

The Honda security system only cuts off fuel.

My '05 gets like that if I turn the key too fast. Try this: When you start the car, hold it in the "run" position for a 2-3 seconds before turning it all the way to the "start" position. As long as I remember to wait when I turn the key, it starts quickly and easily every time.

After looking at the shop manual, the Pilot has two systems:
1) The Security System -- deals with alarm and door locks.
2) Immobilizer System -- fuel pump will not be enabled if the key code is wrong.

If the wrong key or a defective key is used, according to the manual, the immobilizer system will log a code that should be able to be retrieved by the dealer with the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) scan-tool.
Therefore, a dealer should be able to tell you if this is a problem or not.

In addition, the "Immobilizer LED" will flash codes to tell you the problem.
I think the "Immobilizer LED" is a red LED on the dash.
