Pilot Window Saved my life! - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello. For all of those who only hear me complain about my Honda Pilot, I would like to take the time to say... Thank you to Honda!

On Rt. 95 South in CT ON Sunday at 11:00am I was slammed with a piece of ice that blew off of a 20 yr olds car that nearly landed in my lap or worse yet could have crushed my head. I have attached a photo. The sound was thunderous and class was blown all the way to the rear of the Pilot.

The window did its job and while I can't say for sure.... I don't know how many windows would have held up this well under the extreme impact we encountered. This was a huge piece of ice and snow that hit with us doing 70-75 mph.

Thank God we survived and did not wreck the car in the process. And boy oh boy am I glad I had my sunglasses on!

I chased down the dumb girl who could not take 2 mins to clean off her Saturn before hitting the highway and was able to get a report and the CT state trooper let her off with a nice warning.. another topic for another day!

So thank you Honda for putting in a quality windshield, it just may have saved my live!

 Glad to hear it was a close(but-no-cigar) call.

After the last ice storm, I slud a slab of ice the size of a piece of plywood off the back of my Pilot - but I did it in my driveway with a scraper. I'm always careful who's in front of me on the highways after a snow/ice storm. NEVER get behind a mail truck.

Let her off with a warning?!! She's responsible for that windshield (at least).

In our area a few weeks ago (link below) pour guy got killed when a chunk of frozen dirt flew from a truck.

Yes thank God. I feel very lucky. The window was depressed nearly 4 inches into the vehicle. I have never seen a window that depressed over such a large area... it turned the mirror sideways and blew off my EX-Pass... and I still chased her down... she would not have stopped. We caught her at an exit ramp at a red light.

I was shocked to hear that she only got a warning... the trooper must have been star gazed by the pretty lady. I guess if I was dead she would have gotten a ticket, but it would have been hard to catch her while dead. She would have been long gone.

We are processing against her insurance but it is really going to be a hassle to recover the $400 after I have laid out for it already. There is no equity in this situation. Not to mention I have to drive back up tomorrow to turn in the rental and pick up my car. 320 miles round trip!

It doesn't sound like you have full glass. Then, it would be up to your insurance company. But if you were able to establish the identity of the responsible party (which is rare in these cases) AND establish culpability (e.g., credible witnesses or a police report where she did not deny culpability), your insurance company might be able to pursue it.

Laws vary by state. I was surprised after reading this article that there's no specific law in NY enforcing liability for ice flying off a vehicle. This happened last month here on LI after the Valentine's Day ice storm:

I though you were liable for ANY hazardous debris falling from your vehicle.

Happened to me on the Mass pike while a passenger in a Chrysler. Biggest BANG I've ever heard in my life. Hit hard enough to dent the roof as well.

In my trip to SC Schneider trucking's orange trucks were clearly the least caring dumping ice and snow everywhere. Just saw another one doing the same thing today.

I do have full glass. Fortunately, I was able to chase her down, my wife was a witness in the passenger seat and when confronted, she did agree that she had her whole rear window covered in ice an snow and that it did come off on the highway. My insurance company at first balked at running it through her insurance since I have full glass but decided since I have a police report and all of the needed info along with her receiving a written warning that they would pursue it that way.

I agree about the laws.... they are very weak in most states. It is really dangerous and life threatening and more should be done to stop this practice. I am very cognizant of my surroundings in the car and immediately noted in my mind that this car could be a problem. I started to pace off and had a plan to pass her as soon as possible so as not to be anywhere behind her... no sooner did I think that then it happened. It was all very slow in my mind but it happened so quickly. No place to run and nowhere to hide. Just glad that window held up!

If you live in NJ you can sign a petition and send it to Corzine, I found this link;

Oh, snap!!!!!!!

Reassuring about the integrity of the glass though.

Glad you're okay. What do you mean by 'full glass?'

It might vary by state or county, but around here. Dump trucks and cement trucks often have signs on the back saying "stay back - not responsible for rock damage". But then they do have a "cover up" law that requires trucks and trailers to be covered with a tarp when hauling debris.

Full glass coverage on your auto insurance - no deductible on glass damage. The cost is usually very reasonable ($10~$20/yr.) but you must already have comprehensive coverage.

With a previous car, I went through three windshields in about four years (rocks, stones, etc.) before I finally wised up and got full glass coverage.

I haven't replaced a windshield since. :bangh: :cursin: :3: :bonk:

Sounds like her insurance is going to pay all costs. Good news.
