About a year ago, I noticed a sound like a rolling marble coming from the center console area of my 2004 Pilot. I remove the center console, thinking maybe a coin had dropped in there but found nothing. Eventually I traced the sound to coming from inside the heater duct. Fortunately, the item was metallic and when I made a little piece of rubber tubing with a magnet taped to the end, I was able to insert it into the duct and fish the item out without seeing it. Had it been something non-metallic, I would have been hosed.
The thing was a pin made of that cheap yellowish "white metal,"about 1 inch long, maybe 3/16" diameter, and chamfered on the ends like it was made to insert into something...like maybe a hinge pin for one of the heater flaps or something. It was distinctly NOT something that my child would have gotten stuck in the heater vent like a marble or BB or piece of round candy...leading me to believe it was something related to the heating system itself.
I took it to the dealer along with the piece but they weren't able to help. I'm writing from the road right now and can't attach a photo of the piece, but will when I get home.
Any ideas? Anybody have a similar issue with a "foreign object" showing up in their AC/Heater ducting?
I do plan to write to Honda about this since I just don't think the local service guys have a clue...they already had my Pilot for a day and consulted the assembly dwgs for the heater system and could find nothing that seemed to look like this part.
Is it possible that it was something that flew up on the road and fell down through the outside air vents near the windshield? I'm assuming that since air can get through, small objects can get through as well. Apart from a piece that fell out from the inside the ducts, this is the only explanation I can come up with.
Any and all opinions/ideas welcome on this one. |

Post a picture when you get a chance and maybe someone will recognize it.
It could be just a extra part that dropped in during the original assembly. If you aren't having any malfunctions, I wouldn't waste any time at the Dealer. You've already had it documented from your first visit, but save the peice in case something does eventually go wrong. |
